CSIR- Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology located at Okhala, New Delhi, on
17th of May, 2019.
CSIR-Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology (IGIB) is an Institute which is engaged
in research of national importance in the areas of genomics, molecular medicine,
bioinformatics and proteomics. Their mission is to translate concepts developed in basic
biological research to commercially viable technologies for health care.
The session started with a brief introduction of the institute by M/S Beena Pillai (Co-
ordinator, IGIB outreach), who explained about the working pattern of the institute and the
type of research work carried by the scholars over there. She also motivated the students to
pursue research in future as their career by highlighting the sense of accomplishment and
satisfaction received on discovering something on our own.
The students visited the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) department where they
were explained how the Image formation in SEM is accomplished through collection of
the secondary electrons / back scattered electrons generated due to interaction of an
electron beam with the material of the specimens. The characteristic X-rays generated from
the specimens during this interaction are used for elemental analysis.
Then the students visited the High Performance Computing Facility and observed the
supercomputer which is an important tool which enables the researchers at CSIR to store
their research large data sets and to perform numerical calculations easily. They have a
functionally distributed supercomputing environment, housing leading-edge computing
systems, with sophisticated software packages, and connected by a powerful high-speed
fibre-optic network.
The next was Proteomics under which protein research related activities were explained to
the children. For example, development of potential plasma biomarkers for diagnostic or
prognostic applications for disease such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, pathogenic
infections etc were explained. It also includes Identification of protein factors present in
Vitamin B12 deficiency, etc.
Then the students visited the Zebra Fish facility where the students observed how zebra
fish are being used in biomedical research for several decades to study a wide range of
biological phenomena. They were explained the advantages of using zebra fish over other
vertebrate models. They are readily available, hardy, easy, and inexpensive to maintain in
the laboratory, have a short life cycle, and have excellent fecundity. Due to its optical
clarity and reproducible capabilities, it has become one of the predominant models of
human genetic diseases. The students observed all the stages of development of Zebra
fishes and were thrilled to observe the heartbeat of the developing embryo under the
electron microscope.
In the end a research talk was given by Dr. Kaushik Chaudhary where he shared his
experience of working in CSIR and being involved in different research work. He is the Sr.
Scientist in CSIR and explained to the students about his work on Metabolic regulation of
protein folding.
An assembly on elections was
conducted by students of XII A, B and
C. Assembly was based on different
techniques applied by the politicians to
get votes and the unawareness of the
