International Dragon Boat Federation IDBF President’s Welcome

It is with great pleasure that on behalf of the International Dragon Boat Federation I welcome dragon boat clubs from around the globe to the 10th Club Crews World Championship in Adelaide.

The Organising Committee and volunteers have worked tirelessly for many months to make this Championship a success and on behalf of the IDBF and all the competitors we thank them for their hard work in providing this Championship. This is the second time a World Championship has been held

in Australia and I am certain that this Championship will be as successful as the one held previously in Sydney 2007.

It is heartening to see that so many clubs from many countries have made the long journey south. The Australians are always one of the largest teams at our Championships; we all now realize what an effort they make in their long journeys to race.

In the short time since the IDBF was formed in 1981 the modern, colourful and exciting sport of Dragon Boat racing now takes place in 85 countries. Next year the World Championships return to China the birth place of our sport.

In conclusion, these Championships are the pinnacle for the best Clubs from around the world to compete for the title of World Champion. I hope that for each competitor, all the training with your team will prove worthwhile in your club’s endeavour to reach your goal in this Championship.

The history and traditions of Dragon BoatingThe Dragon Boat Festival in China is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and is a major Chinese holiday. The Dragon Boat Festival began as an occasion for driving off evil spirits and pestilence, for finding peace in one’s life, and to supplicate the God of Water to prevent disaster and bring fortune. Traditionally all debts must be made good on that day. Homage is paid to one’s ancestors and the dragon is appeased.

The festival was later enriched by the legend of Qu Yuan 332-296 BC (pronounced Chou Yuan), the legendary poet and statesman who lived during the Chou Dynasty. He was Privy Councillor to the Emperor of the Kingdom of Chu, and enjoyed his esteem and confidence. However, other ministers who were jealous of his position, whispered damaging rumours about him to the sovereign and he was banished from the kingdom.

Heart stricken by his injustice, he wandered for many years throughout the countryside composing poems about his love for the people, which he hoped would be heard and heeded by the Emperor. His inconsolable desolation grew until one day he grasped a large stone to his chest and threw himself into the Mi Lo River.

The local fishermen were so moved that they raced out in their boats to recover his body, banging their drums to frighten away the fish and prevent them eating his body. As they did not find him, they then threw rice dumplings into the river to succour his spirit.

Before a dragon boat can enter the competition, it must first undergo a ceremony to ‘bring it to life’. Local leaders offer prayers and the eyes of the dragon are painted on, to give him sight. The ornately decorated boats are carried to the shore amidst the clamour of gongs and drums and a ceremony is held involving incense, prayers, throwing rice on the water and the lighting of fireworks.

The most popular dish during the festival is Tzung Tzu (glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves).

Adelaide Sea DragonsWe are a proud and inclusive club, aspiring to continued local, national and international success in a friendly and enjoyable environment.

Our members come from three regions in South Australia – Adelaide, Ceduna and Streaky Bay (the distance between Adelaide and Ceduna is about 800kms!). Despite the geographic diversity we are a united club and regularly prove that distance is no barrier to success.

We are competitive in all categories and compete in Open, Women’s and Mixed divisions. Having been established for over 29 years ASD is one of the founding clubs of the South Australian Association – DragonBoat SA.

Our credo of “Train Hard – Win Easy” has seen us enjoy considerable success at all levels. We have competed in CCWC in Cape Town, Toronto, Penang, Macau, Hong Kong and Ravenna and we are the record holders for the 200km and 100km Murray River Paddling Marathon in the dragon boat class.

We are excited to be competing in our hometown and welcoming crews from throughout Australia and the world.

Black DragonsBlack Dragons was formed in 2003 and has continued to grow and compete with considerable success at local, national and international events.

In recent years, from a club of around 50 members we are proud to have had 9 of our paddlers selected to represent Australia in the Auroras teams.

Our club works under the creed of ‘Play hard, Paddle harder,’ with an emphasis on training hard but keeping it interesting and above all, fun and enjoyable.

In addition to solid training and competitive racing, Black Dragons hosts many social events throughout the year, building on club camaraderie and friendships.

ACCA Dragon Boat Racing TeamMasterfully disguised as ninjas, ACCA has been racing competitively since 1984. Everyone seems normal which means that, statistically speaking, some of them probably are… A dynamic and riotous team, ACCA pioneered the ancient technique of repeated letters in one’s name to acquire good luck. ACCA has risen against great adversity, losing beloved teammates to motherhood, serious texting injuries and the incurable addiction of watching baby sea otters on YouTube, to accomplish glamorous “paddle hair” and uneven tan lines.

ACCA has trained hard in the offseason, using some unconventional ways of Dragon Boat training such as wife carrying, tantric breathing and genetic engineering. In addition to paddling, ACCA strives to perfect their craft by knitting yak hair with Tibetan monks while pondering the absurdities of male grooming products and eating kale chips. Now having put the 2013 race fixing and motorised boat allegations behind them, ACCA has approached this season with questionable morals and effluvious excitement, free from the shackles of expectations and court orders. If there was ever a trophy awarded to a team most likely to inspire world peace or global condemnation, ACCA would proudly stake their claim on the podium.

Adelaide PhoenixTaking our name from the Chinese mythical firebird the Phoenix, our values are foresight, commitment, loyalty and strength. As the old phoenix dies in the flames, a young one arises; its power sent from the heavens and passed onto its people. Adelaide Phoenix Dragon Boat club formed in 2009 with a mere six members. Today we have nearly 50 members and this will be our 7th National competition. We train hard and enjoy many social events and other fitness activities together. We train on the salt water lake at West Lakes and are proud to be the host city for this year’s Nationals, Asian Champs and CCWC events. Watch out for our State team DBSA as we boast having some of our members successful in gaining a spot in that boat also. Good luck to all teams visiting the great state of South Australia!

Looking forward to rising from the ashes again with our fiery spirit.....Adelaide Phoenix rise up!

Canberra Combined Grammar SchoolsFounded in the early 90’s, students in the Combined Canberra Grammar Schools squad have trained three times a week on Lake Burley Griffin.

Early in the season (Term Four) it is not unusual to have crisp weather and mist hovering above the surface of the water. In the years when they have been preparing to compete internationally, such as for Club Championships in Prague (2009) and Hong Kong (2012), and with the Australian Auroras Squad who competed in Canada (2015), winter training sessions were often in sub zero temperatures.

Highlights would include the performance in Hong Kong where, due to an anomaly of the scoring system, the Combined Grammar Club won more medals than any other Club and the Australian Flag boasted the top position!

In recent ACT Championships the Grammar crews competed impressively against the local adult clubs.

Burleigh Fire Dragons Burleigh Fire Dragons has been an incorporated club since 1999. Since those early beginnings the club has established a strong and dedicated team of paddlers of all ages and abilities. Based in Burleigh Heads on the central Gold Coast we not only have access to the wide expanse of beautiful Lake Orr but also the surrounding waterways of Varsity Lakes and Burleigh Waters, providing all-weather, year round training opportunities.

Over the years the club has achieved many successes in State, National and International events. In 2014 a small, dedicated team of Senior C women set themselves a goal of qualifying for the 2015 CCWC. With just enough paddlers to form a 10’s crew, the team achieved its goal, winning gold medals in both the 200 and 500 metre events at the Queensland State and AUSDBF National championships along the way.

In 2015 many of those same paddlers will be in Adelaide to not only defend their National championship but also to reconnect with the many friends they have made through paddling over the years.

Many thanks to our coaches and club mates for their support and best wishes to all competitors.

Let’s go Burleigh!

Brave Hearts DBCBrave Hearts Dragon Boat Club was formed in 2005 when a group of cancer survivors built their own dragon boat. The club has continued to be strong in the Albury / Wodonga region and has supported many cancer survivors, their families and friends over the years. After a cancer diagnosis, your world turns upside down. It can be the same for loved ones too. Brave Hearts helps those who have been diagnosed to start to feel ’normal’ again, to find inspiration and support from others and to show that there is life after a cancer diagnosis.

This year we have survivors, supporters and community members paddling in our team and we hope to improve on last year’s results in the AusChamps and enjoy our first time entry into the CCWC.

You will recognise them from their skin cancer scars , crocodile scaled shirts and stiff backs This teams is full of worn out sportspeople who won’t take no for an answer, if they can hear it at all!

When the gun goes off they put the paddle to the metal and launch out of the blocks like 21 year olds.

Looking forward to some cooler weather and “Releasing The Beast ” amongst the Worlds Dragon community .

Currumbin DragonsCurrumbin Creek on the Gold Coast, Eastern Australia, is the home of Currumbin Dragons Paddling Club who play, train, swim and paddle in its waters sharing it with dolphins, occasional turtles, old man sting ray, hosts of bird life and even the whales that pass on their migration.

This year as Australia plays host to thousands of paddlers from around the globe we welcome these visitors to our Down Under waters and hope they will find something special they can take away with them but perhaps not all the medals.

CDPC will be fielding their usual Senior A, Senior B women’s crews and for the first time a Senior C team - all of whom have worked hard to bring our CCWC campaign to fruition. “Nevertheless Currumbin has faced real adversity in its preparation”, laments Head Coach Faye Rallings. “Nine serious injuries in one season ripped into our numbers and we had to gird our loins and forge ahead with the one unifying goal - to make it onto the podium”.

Chinese Youth League Chinese Youth League Dragon Boat (CYL DB) was founded 30 years ago and stands as one of the longest-running clubs of the sport in Sydney. The club’s Opens Crew are the current 200m National Champions in the Open Age/Premier division and in the current 2015/2016 season, they have taken out the DBNSW Perpetual Trophy (from races 1-4) and are also the NSW State Champions and winners of the popular Chinese New Year Races at Darling Harbour. Other crews in the club have also been competitive this season, with the Mixed Crew winning the DBNSW Perpetual Trophy (from races 1-4), while the Womens Crew came 3rd in Chinese New Year races. Manly DragonsThe Manly Dragon Boat Club has come full circle at this Australian Championships in Adelaide. In 2010, a team of 28 paddlers travelled to Adelaide from their home on the shores of Moreton Bay, east of Brisbane, to compete in their first ever Australian Championships.

Community support, valued sponsors and our family atmosphere have been major contributors to our success since then and for seeing our club to its 10th birthday this December. Our club has grown to around 100 members and includes a wide range of athletes - Juniors to Senior C, social paddlers to National and International representatives.

So we look forward to returning to Adelaide, to race in the divisions we actually entered, to win something (unlike our last visit), to contest our Australian Masters Champions title and to qualify for the 2018 CCWC…but most of all to continue to have lots of fun with our Manly Dragon Boat family. So we will be looking to catch up with old friends, make new ones, to paddle it out with the best on the water and share some fun off the water. Come by and say hello.

Good luck to you all and see you on the water.

Komodo Paddle ClubKomodo Paddle Club was formed in 2010; the brainchild of some mates with a goal to build a club that would measure its success by the smiles of our members after every training session, race, and regatta.

We start every season with simple goals for our members: to finish the season fitter, faster, and to enjoy the shenanigans-packed Komodo adventure.

The Komodo Philosophy of Paddling is all about respect for the commitment of our fellow competitors. We start every competition with the same club goal: one podium finish, over any distance, in any category.

Port HackingThe Port Hacking Dragon Boat Club was formed in 1983. The Club won the inaugural Australian Dragon Boat races in Farm Cove, Sydney Harbour on April 8 1984. They then represented Australia in Honk Kong and Singapore.

The club has continued to participate in and promote the sport and its cultural heritage in NSW, Australia and internationally.

Located in Yowie Bay on the Port Hacking river in the south of Sydney we enjoy some of the cleanest and most natural waterways available. The beautiful Sutherland Shire is a great place to live, work and train.

The club is now in its 33rd year and continues to work hard at training, competing and supporting all of its members. We cater for both the social and competition focused paddler. This year we will also be holding a regatta on the Woronora River in May.

Whenever you are in Sydney feel free to look us up and join in a training session on the river for a paddle.

Pittwater DragonsPittwater Dragon Boat Racing Club (PDBRC) is a small club boasting approximately 40 members. We are now in our 5th season and getting closer to achieving our goal of fielding a full men’s crew, in addition to our established women’s crew. Our membership is predominantly ‘over 50’ but we usually compete in Senior A’s to keep our ‘youngsters’ happy.

We are located on the spectacular shores of Pittwater on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia, so training is never a task. We are a dedicated racing club and all paddlers are totally committed to training on and off the water accordingly, however; we also manage to find time to enjoy ourselves as a club, off the water.

Nowra WaterdragonsEleven years young, Nowra Waterdragons Dragonboat and Outrigger Canoe Club Inc is a small club with a warm heart. Friendship, fitness and fun combine to make a paddling family which competes successfully at all levels from community regattas to the International stage.

Dragonboating is our core but we also outrig and most members are happy anywhere near water. We paddle and play on the spectacular Shoalhaven River near Nowra and the ocean in Jervis Bay, NSW.

When not training and competing we might be bonding at a fundraiser or after party, finding great coffee and breakfast, or having a family BBQ . We welcome new paddlers and are always happy when DB visitors join us on their travels.

Pacific Dragons The Pacific Dragons are a Dragon Boat and Outrigger Canoe club who can be found paddling around Sydney Harbour. The club was formed in 1993, and today has around 80 members who have achieved success at all levels of dragon boat, outrigger canoeing and single craft paddling. We are 23 years young and have enjoyed many years of paddling, parties, weekends away, overseas trips and great friendships.

We pride ourselves on giving our all in competition, supporting our fellow paddlers, our chosen charities, the sports we participate in and our local community…and last, but not least we are committed to having fun and enjoying our paddling!

In recent years the Pacific Dragons and its members have enjoyed many exciting, challenging and rewarding paddling experiences - including racing in Hawaii, Italy, Hong Kong and the Cook Islands. We continue to seek out new paddling challenges in Australia and around the world. A highlight for the last season was to send a womens and mens crew over to Hawaii to compete in the Queen Liliokalani, E Lau Hoe, Pailolo and Molokai Hoe outrigger canoe races – a lot of kms travelled around the amazing Hawaiian islands. This season finishes with competing at the DB World Club Crew Champs in Adelaide and we look forward to racing in our home country.

Good luck to all clubs and crew racing at the Aus Champs!

WAMWAM, (WAshington Masters), is a regional team comprised of paddlers 40-plus, from 5 clubs throughout Western Washington. In 2012, WAM was founded. The goal -- create a competitive masters team that afforded paddlers the opportunity to also compete with home teams. Paddlers commit more time than typical because they compete with their home clubs, while also training with WAM. In 2014, the team set its sights on a new goal –- send a Women’s Senior B team to the 2016 CCWC. Training requires unusual dedication; it rotates between four locations, with some traveling over 2 hours 2-3 times per week.

Based in sunny Long Beach California, under the Southern California Dragon Boat Club, and consider our paddling grounds a privileged marine playground, with regular sightings of sea lions and dolphins. Each year as a club we travel somewhere: Vancouver, Hong Kong, Toronto, Adelaide; and many of our teammates have been part US National Teams.
