I really enjoyed the articles, especiallythe one by Dr. Hoeh on the visit to Mt,Sinai. It made me feel almost as if Icould see the Israelites all the way throughtheir journey.

FaithThe article in The Good News on

"Faith" by Mr. Portune really hit me hardbetween the eyes. I have seen the movieson some of the inner workings of themighty Work being done on earth byGod through the hands of man. The paragraph on God's Church needing to becollectively and unitedly confident andfilled with faith and totally behind whatGod is doing, made me realize how lax Ihad become. I feU down on my knees andcried out to God for forgiveness and promised Him I would get on the ball rightaway. the heartfelt thanks for wonderfully inspiring articles on the visit to Mt. Sinai. As a Church of God member I am inspired greatly by articles, pictures andmaps like these, and I pray God will allowother journeys and more revelation oftruths to make this way of life truly thevery best for us all.

Pass on to the editors of Tomorrou/sW orid my deep appreciation for all thearticles. Keep up the articles and picturesabout the Work, however small it mayseem, for every phase and facet of God'sWork is meat to us all who know andunderstand.

the first article I thought that I must writemy "thank you." Upon finishing each article in order, the same feeling welled up.Now, having read completely to the exclamation mark on the last page, I say,how wonderfully inspiring! What a privilege and blessing to receive free suchencouraging and informative writings.Thank you.

the last few years. But never have they hada positive effect on my life. Being in astate of lethargy and discouragement, Ihappened to be at a friend's house lastnight. He mentioned your article. I hadjust received my Good News the day before. So upon arising this morning I beganreading the article. Before finishing thearticle my eyes were filled with tears and Iwas thanking God for the kind of lovingFather He is, and for His wonderful wayof life. This article has helped me greatlyto understand and react properly to various difficulties on the job and in my personal life! Thank you very much for thisfood to grow on.

Being presently unemployed, I felt thearticle on patience written by Dr. Zimmerman in the new Good News was specifically for me. I have found myself bitter andresentful rather than forgiving, understanding, patient and loving. Thanks forsuch spiritual food!

TO YOURQUESTIONS ABOUT

THE FOREIGNWORK

In this article, the Vice President of the Foreign Educational Service answers manyof your questions aboutGod's Work outside theUnited States, and discussesthe new doors God is opening up to the "Foreign

Work."

by Ronald l. Dart

THE sun never sets on the Work ofGod! No matter where you travel in this wide world, you are

never far from a Church of God or anoffice of Ambassador College. Thoughby the world's standards this Work isstill small, no longer can it be comparedto a grain of mustard seed.

In the month of July, 1971 ThePLAIN TRUTH was printed and mailedto over two million subscribers. It wentout in five languages to nearly everynation on this planet! One third ofthose magazines went into what we inthe United States have come to call the"Foreign Work."

Yet most of our members are verymuch in the dark about the progressand the extent of this part of God'sWork. Wherever we go we are delugedwith questions about the Foreign Work.

Since we are often unable to answer allthe questions, we've decided to answerin The GOOD NEWS those questionsmost asked.

O. Exactly how many offices do wehave outside the United States, andwhen were they opened?

A. We now have ten offices 10 fivecontinents. We list them here in theorder of their beginning:

London, England January, 1953Sydney, Australia December, 1959Vancouver, Canada .. " February, 1961Dusseldorf,

West Germany April, 1962Manila, Philippines July, 1962Geneva, Switzerland October, 1963Johannesburg,

South Africa February, 1964Jerusalem, Israel April, 1967Mexico City, Mexico .. October, 1967Auckland, New Zealand . August, 1968

In addition to these, we have two

other areas where men are handlinglimited amounts of mail besidescarrying out ministerial responsibilities.Mr. Robert Flores in Santiago de Chileforwards mail from a local post officebox to Big Sandy for handling; and Mr.Russell Johnson in Salisbury, Rhodesiapicks up, processes, and forwards to Johannesburg all the mail from the Rho

desian areas. These are not mailingoffices, but mail receiving offices.

Q. How many churches do we haveabroad?

A. We now have a total of 58Churches and 13 Bible Studies outsideof the United States, and the attendancein July averaged over 12,000. Thesepeople are ministered to by 78 ordainedministers.

O. How many foreign language editions of The PLAIN TRUTH are

published and what is their circulation? What about TOMORROW'SWORLD? The Ambassador CollegeCorrespondence Course?

A. In addition to the English language, The PLAIN TRUTH magazine ispublished in French, German, Spanishand Dutch. We do not yet have a ToMORROW'S WORLD magazine in fureignlanguages. However, Mr. Herbert W.Armstrong has given the go-ahead, and,God willing, TOMORROW'S WORLD willbegin in aU four languages by Januaryof 1972. The circulation figures for ourforeign language magazines as ofAugust 31st are as follows:

Spanish 81,700French 54,391German .. , 5~,602

Dutch 13,459

We also, of course, have a great dealof material published in the Italianlanguage to complement Mr. FrankInglima's Italian broadcast aired inCanada. Weare on two stations therewith a modest response. As soon as we

Q. With 00 broadcast in Englandfor several years, how is the Workbeing carried 00 there?

A. The Work in England IS doingmuch better than you would expect considering the limited doors that havebeen opened to us. Basically, the Workin England has been built by RadioLuxembourg, Reader's Digest, two anda half years of offshore radio stations, and an advertising campaign which encompassed the Slinday Times, the Sunday Express, the Daily Telegraph, Drivemagazine, the GlasgoU' Weekly N ell'S,and a later campaign in Reader's Digest. All 10 all, through the years a totalof 262,000 people have respondeddirectly to ads or broadcasts in GreatBritain, and the British mailing list inJuly stood at 116,000 subscribers.

But the best is yet to come. Werecently ran a small expenment 10 GreatBritain by putting The PLAIN TRUTHmagazine 00 neuisstands ! It nowappears that as a method of buildingthe mailing list, this may be one of themost efficient we have ever tried. Weoften judge the effectiveness of ourmedia by our cost per new subscriber. These costs range from just over a dollar for very good advertising to as muchas $15.00 per new subscriber for poorradio stations or poor ads.

The newsstand magazines brought innew subscribers at a rate of $1.25 perperson. Not bad. But it doesn't reallytell the whole story. People in Englandare accustomed to getting magazinesfrom newsstands rather than subscribing directly to the publishers. Therefore, there must be a great number ofadditional readers who have not sub-

Q. Has anything more been doneconcerning a Japanese Work?

A. The same problems mentionedabove in relation to the ScandinavianWurk have prevented us from goingahead at the present time in the Japanese language. Yet, the Japanese Work, too, has already started! The first ad inthe Japanese edition of Reader's Digest

appeared in the August issue inEnglislJ. We are expecting a goodresponse from these advertisements andwe should very rapidly develop a solidcore of bilingual Japanese readers.

Meanwhile, two Japanese studentshave been accepted to AmbassadorCollege for the autumn term this year.Preparation is being made, and whenGod opens the door in the Japanese Ian-

However, the Scandinavian Workbegan anyway several months ago. Itoccurred to us that the English languageis spoken very widely in Scandinaviaand that we might be able to reachmany people effectively in English. With that in mind, we ran seven ads inEnglish in the Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish editions of Readers Digest. What surprised us most was that ourimmediate response was just as high aswe could have expected if we had advertised in Norwegian, Swedish, andDanish! We had over 6,000 on themailing list at one time, and even afterrenewing all the trial subscriptions, wenow have over 3,000 regular PLAINTRUTH subscribers in those countries.

Rear in .mind that all these subscribers are bilingual. They speakEnglish besides their native tongue. Our

A. One of the chief problems we encounter in any new foreign area IS lan

gllage. It isn't easy to just decide to"start a Danish Work," for instance. Inany such situation you need translators, mail readers, letter answerers, and before very long even ministers. So far,the number of Scandinavian studentswho have come through AmbassadorCollege is very limited and comesnowhere near giving us the manpowerwe need to do a large ScandinavianWork.

Our Foreign Language Broadcasters~.~

Mr. Benitez arrived from Kiara Sundayevening. I have been talking with him allthis morning about the situation there. Butfirst of all let me give you the full letterwhich I received from his brother, just ashe wrote it:

You might be amazed upon receiptof this letter, since I have not writtento you personally. I think it is nowthe exact time to pen down this important things.

Sir, I'm sorry to tell you that thetrouble which started in PikitCotabato a month ago had alreadyreach in our place. We could see inthe distance the day and night burning of houses. We discuss thesethings with Mr. Benitez my elderbrother, and other important men inour locality. Other assumed that thiswill not harm us. But last night at2:00 a.m., we were awaken by gunfire. It was the house of my neighbour in the other side of the river. Jhave seen the flying red bullets thathit the house. A t the third firing thefamily had awaken from their deepsleep and had realize their death, Iknow because we could hear thecrying of mother and children. Whilethey were crying the house startburning.

In the absence of my mind due tolong sleep I push the door instead ofpulling it. We rush down with myfour children and it was difficult toescape because the whole place waslighted. We make it rhr u the shadows of our house. What an arduousescape we made. We run to the

and it's becoming clear that the churchin Kiara is composed of YOllr brethren.

At present, there is almost a civil warraging on the island of Mindanao andour brethren are caught in the middle. There is a "Christian" versus Moslemreligious element in the fighting, but itseems to go even further than that. Thefollowing letter from Mr. Adair willhelp you to understand the situation:

During a recent financial crisis, thequestion arose as to whether we couldafford to keep the Filipino office open.Word that we considered closing the office down reached the Filipinos, andthey responded with prayer, fasting, and giving to such an extent that theWork in the Philippines became internally self-supporting within a month orso. At the time of this writing, we aresending no money from Headquartersto the Philippines. These people whoseincome averages between $35 and $45per month are carrying most of theweight of the entire expense of thePhilippine Work. They are not atpresent able to pay for the printing oftheir magazine, all of their radio stations, and a few other external expenses, but they do pay all of theirlocal expenses.

Besides the churches on the island ofLuzon, Manila and U rdaneta, we'vebeen working for a long time withanother large group on the island ofMindanao at Kiara. These people cameto us already meeting together withtheir own leaders. Consequently, we

often have not listed them among ourchurches. However, their leaders havefaithfully taught them from our literature, and have made no effort to drawthe people away. More and more ofthem are being baptized by Mr. Adair,

Q. How are the brethren inPhilippines faring?

A. They are remaining faithful througha great fight of affiictions! An articleby Mr. Colin Adair in the August

These aremostly scattered new people who havecome to the knowledge of the truththrough the Spanish edition of ThePLAIN TRUTH, La PURA VERDAD.(Visit requests in Mexico and CentralAmerica are taken care of separately byMr. Enrique Ruiz from Mexico City.)

Some of you have heard that Mr.Ruiz has been ill and have asked abouthim. He was stricken with typhoid feverand contracted hepatitis at the sametime. The doctor felt that he was verynear death, but God has healed him andhe is back at work, though still a bitweak and not yet able to handle his fullwork load. Mr. RUIZ pastors a church inMexico City which averages abouttwenty in attendance. In addition, heconducts occasional Bible Studies inGuadalajara and other Mexican cities.

You'll get a good idea of the comparative distribution of La PURA VER

ricefield, whil .. th ..r" we prayen Godfor protection and deliverance fromthe horror. The trouble now hasworsen, just this morning before Iwrote this letter a mother was hauledin a jeep being hit ill her breast inthree places by bullets and still aliveand breastfed her baby. We couldwitness massacre every day. It is notonly the Ilagas and the Muslems thatcreate trouble. The counterfeit Ilagasmassacre people of any kind. It was agroup of people that 'arrange to killtheir enemies of long ago. Some ofthem who are poorer than the poorjoin this party to solve their problems, strike and hit anybody. Thesound of guns is the music of theday! If you will receive the escapedinto your house and give them foodyou will be slain the following night. We do not know where to go because we are not sure who is theenemy. The Free Press and the Philippine Herald have no knowledgeabout this. This shows that the government is ignorant about thesethings. Our big problem now is ourfood. We could not farm, our land isin the troubled area.

Please join us in your prayer thatGod will continue to protect us anddeliver us from this trouble. Pleaseinform me what to do. Shall we vacate the area, and move to anotherplace in Mindanao? Some of thebrethren are fortunate because theirlands are situated far from thetrouble area. But we are certain thatthis will spread all over Mindanaobecause we have seen the progress ofthe trouble. Lastly may your ferventprayer help us in this time oftrouble.

It's quite a letter, isn't it? And thetrouble has spread since he wrote this onJuly 25. The Manila Times headline thismorning is, "Blackshirrs Get Ultimatum."The Blackshirts are members of the M.I.M.(Mindanao Independent Movement). Theultimatum came from General Garcia, P.C. commander. He is demanding surrenderby August 15. But I doubt very much ifanything like that will happen. The fighting is now in four provinces after an initial start in Cotabato,

Mr. Benitez gave me the following facts:We have over 100 families in the area, most of them relying on the land for theirIi vclihood. Already the worne-u and clri Idren have been moved to the safety of thenearby towns, leaving only the men towork the land and flee if trouble arrives.Mr. Benitez himself wants to move hisfamily to Don Carlos. You see, Kiara is asettlement right off the main highway intothe interior. There is only one access to theplace, and no communications whatever tothe nearby towns. Trouble could easily arrive there and there would be no means ofhelp at all. There are, of course, no government troopers in the area. So it is prettyisolated.

I have decided, on Mr. Benitez's recommendations, to advise the individual families to move if they can, rather than try tomove the entire church as a whole. Manyof them have relatives ill other pans of thePhilippines. At the same time we have decided to cancel the Feast in Kiara and holdit instead in Don Carlos, which is a townright on the main highway and where wealso have a small church. I t will mean hiring a tent for services, for our buildingthere wouldn't hold the 700 people expected to attend. I will be sending a rnern-

The GOOD NEWS

ber letter to all informing them of thechange. Unfortunately, the plot of land Imentioned in the telex as a possible resettlement site is also in a trouble area, notfar north, so that is now out. It would bealmost a case of out of the frying pan intothe fire. However, Pike Mirto's brother-inlaw is well known in Palawan, a large island to the west of the mainland, and hecould possibly arrange for some land to bemade available to the church for homesteading. Of course this will take sometime to arrange, if available. Also, we havea member in the Negros area of the Visayaswho may be able to provide some land furthe people. Mr. Benitez is hoping, naturally, that the trouble will die down so theywon't have to move. It means losing theirhomes and land. But I have advised himto start making preparations to moveanyway, and if the trouble is settled theycan always change their mind and stay. Sonow we plan to dismantle the tabernaclebuilding erected a while back in Kiara(it's a shame because it is a fine building- I saw it in March) and sell the material. Also, Mr. Benitez was building ahome and he will now do the same with it.

So the outcome is that they will beginpreparations to move immediately and takesteps to protect their families. At the sametime we will try to find a resettlementarea. Iridividual families will rno ve if pussible. In short, unless things settle downthe church will be dispersed in all directions, but many of them may be able to getwhere there are other members, and evensome might be able to get to a church area.If the Palawan plan materializes, then perhaps a group might be able to move there.Mr. Benitez is concerned that it means lesssupport for the church here and perhaps aburden on us helping them. His heart is inthe right place. I have assured him that thesafety and security of his people comes before their tithes and offerings.

Will let you know how things go withthe brethren in Kiara as Mr. Benitez keepsme informed.

Q. Why do you call it the "Foreign

Work"?

A_ The question may sound a little

strange to some of our American read

ers, but our European members will im

mediately grasp the reason for it. They

are not "foreigners." When I'm visiting

a European, South African, Australian,

or even Canadian Church, 1 am the

foreigner.

The phrase "Foreign Work" is rap

idly becoming obsolete - there is no

part of the world that is "foreign" to

this Work.

Nevertheless, the title "foreign

Work" has special meaning for all of

us no matter what our nationality. In

giving the "great commission," Christ

was not merely directing those instruc

tions to his twelve apostles. It was a

commission not to one man or one

group of men, but for the entire Church

through all ages. He told them: "Go ye

November-December 1971

therefore, and teo.eh all nations, baptiz

ing them in the name of the Father, and

of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"

(Matt. 28:19).

It is, of course, understandable that

we take the Gospel to our own people

first. After all, Christ sent the Gospel

first to the Jews. But it wasn't long be

fore he told the apostles to get out of

their own country and away from their

own people and to preach the Gospel to

the Gentiles - to the whole world.

The initial thrust of the "Foreign

Work" came from Jerusalem. Peter was

the first to carry the Gospel to a Gen

tile, and in a very short time a church

had been established in Antioch, of

which many of the members were

Gentile.

Strangely though, the impetus for the

Foreign Work continued not from Jeru

salem, but from Antioch! It was to

those in Antioch that the Holy Spirit

spoke saying, "Separate me Barnabas

and Saul for the work whereunto 1 have

called them" (Acts 13: 2) .

And so the Foreign Work moved out

into Asia Minor. The Headquarters was

still Jerusalem, but the base of operations for this part of the Foreign

Work was not Jerusalem, but Antioch.

So it becomes clear that the commission

to go into all the world applied not

only to the Jerusalem Church, but to

each and every Church that was later

established. For example, the Church at

Philippi supported Paul during most of

his work in Corinth. He had little con

tact with Antioch and Jerusalem and

apparently received no financial help

from them. What help he got, he got

from a Church that was itself a part of

the Foreign Work.

And so the Work of God continued

down through the ages. The Foreign

Work extended on into Spain, Scythia

and Armenia, eventually finding its way

back across Europe to England. Then

finally, the "Foreign Work" reached out

and evangelized North America! We

Americans, now so vigorously pursuing

the "Foreign Work," were not so very

long ago ourselves the field of the

Foreign Work.

In these latter times, the primary base

of operations for the Foreign Work has

Most of God1s ministers have been asked this question onnumerous occasions - especially by those who are new inthe Church. This article will give you many helpful tips on

how you can PRAY EFFECTIVELY for God1s Work!

by Brian Knowles

Y O UR prayer time is one of the mostcritical areas of your entire Christian life. Yet it is an area of

frequent discouragement and frustration. Why? Because many tend to getinto a 1'IIt in their prayers. Let's analyzethe problem and see how the patternoften emerges.

In the Beginning ...

When yOll were hapti7ed the chancesare you didn't know a great deal aboutwhat real prayer was. It is likely youwere accustomed to the traditional"sleepy-time prayer" that most littlechildren learn - "Now I lay me downto sleep...." Perhaps you had beentaught to repeat the "Lord's Prayer."Then again, you may have practicedsome other form of vain repetition involving the use of beads or a similardevice. Or you may never have prayedall)' kind of "prayer."

After you learned that you shouldpray, you probably had much difficultywith those first shaky, unsure attempts.Perhaps it was hard to get the wordsout.

Possibly you had learned that thewords of Christ in Matthew 6 were intended as an ontllne for prayer. Youdiscovered they were not meant to bevainly repeated over and over againuntil they lost their meaning. Thatknowledge may have represented amajor breakthrough for you.

So you opened your Bible to Matthew6 when you prayed and went down theline. You hallowed God's name, askedHim to send His Kingdom and to do

His will on earth. You asked God to[urgive yuu for your sins and to provideyou with your "daily bread." You requested that God would not lead youinto sore trial and that He woulddeliver you from the evil one (Satan). Then you probably said "In JesusChrist's name, Amen." You were nutvainly repeating the prayer in exactlythe words of the Bible, but you wereusing it as a guideline for prayer andyou were doing fine.

But after awhile it began to be "oldhat." Your days as a novice in prayerwere over. Now you wanted to go on to"bigger things." But you were a creature of habit like we all are. It was hardto break away from that outline andpray from original tbougbt . Once a"Lord's Prayer" man - always a"Lord's Prayer" man - or so it seemed.

Others get into other kinds of ruts. It's not always the "Lord's Prayer" rut.Another common one is the "pray forthe ministry" rut. This is where youhave gotten into the habit of prayingfor the ministers, starting with Mr.Herbert Armstrong and working yourway down the list until you come toyour own local area. But, of course, such lists can become obsolete - andmost names on a list may be mean

ingless to you unless you know theperson.

Maybe you are praying for Mr. Hargrove "down in New Orleans" andthen you suddenly realize he's been inPhoenix for some time. Perhaps you'restill praying for Mr. Docken in the

Philippines when you find out he wasrecently at Headquarters and is now inAustralia. And with over 500 ministersit certainly gets complicated keepingtrack of who's where!

Sometimes the names get mixed up.For example, there is Mr. Pinelli andthere is Mr. Panella. There is Mr. GlenWhite and Mr. Vaiden White. Thereare several Mr. Coles. There are twoMr. Albert Portunes and a Mr. JohnPortune. There are two Mr. Neffs, twoMr. Clarks, two Mr. Waterhouses andseveral Mr. McNairs. It all gets veryconfusing, doesn't it?

We might as well realize, brethren, that with so many ministers around theworld, praying for all of them by namecould become a fllll-time job! It's justnot practical anymore to use such a listof ministers as a "prayer list." But thatdoes not mean you should give up praying for the ministry, of course! Paulsaid, "Brethren, PRAY FOR US." Thequestion is not whether to pray for theministry, but HOW.

Trying to pray a comprehensive, sincere and meaningful prayer for everyminister in the Church by name has become impractical and virtually impossible. The main thing is that you prayfor all the ministers in a general way,

but zeroing in on those ministers whohave key functions in the Work. Mr.Herbert Armstrong and Mr. Ted Armstrong are especially in need of constantprayers for protection, wisdom and success in doing the most critical functionsin the Work today! This is explained

Page 10: International Magazine ofThe Church ofGod - Resource … News 197… · International magazine of THE CHURCH OF GOD ministering to its members scattered abroad ""eGood News ... Rizal

8

more fully later in this article. And eachmember should certainly pray for hisown local ministers in his own area.

TherE' ::lre m::lny other ruts yon can getinto in prayer. Everyone has his ownproblem in this area. Every once inawhile we all need to take a "refreshercourse" in prayer and other aspects ofChristian living from God's Word. Perhapsyoll need to re-examine the wholesubject of prayer to gain a refreshingnew perspective!

What Is "Vain Repetition?"

Some have felt that a vain tepetitionis only a memorized prayer such as thetraditional concept of the "Lord'sPrayer," or the meaningless repetitionof multiple "hail Mary's." But that'snot all a vain repetition is. Almost anyprayer call become uain ! To be "vain"means to be u.ortbless, ineffectllal - auaste of time and effort.

Such a pointless babbling andmumbling of trite and insincere wordsis an easy habit to slip into. It can belike driving an automobile. If you'vedriven a long time you begin to drivemore or less automatically. An experienced driver often will drive formiles, deep in thought, and not realizeexactly where he has been [ Perhapsyou've had this experience. Some praylike this. They may be "logging time"and suddenly look up and not realizeexactly what they've been discussing intheir prayer!

Notice how the Nell' English Bibletranslates Matthew 6: 7: "In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more theyJay the more likely they are to be heard.Do not imitate them."

"Sleepy time prayers" usually fallinto this category. Mumbling into apillow when you are half asleep isIItterly ineffectual! You know how difficult it is to listen to a person who istalking to you when he is sleepy anddrones on aimlessly, losing his train ofthought frequently and repeating himself. It seems like he is not really interested in you, but that he is merelytalking to hear the sound of his ownvoice. Well, how do you think Godfeels when HiJ children are praying toHim III a half-hearted, disinterested

way?

The GOOD NEWS

When you pray, be alert, awake andaware of what you are saying to yourCreator and why you are saying it! Remember the warning In Matthew12: 36: "But I say unto you, That everyidle word that men sbal] Jpeak, theyrhall give account thereof in the day ofjudgment."

Would you like to have to go downthe line and account for hours of aimless, meaningless blathering beforeGod's throne? Surely not! Realize thenthat in order to be effective a prayermust be earnest, fervent and sincere(James 5 '.16).

What to Pray About

How you pray is important. When

you pray is a factor. Your attitude inpraying is critical. How often and howlong you pray are important considerations. But perhaps most importantand vital of all is WHAT YOU PRAY!

Undoubtedly there have been manyprayers in history that were prayed inall fervency, at the best time, of reasonable length, in alertness and sincerityand yet were completely ineffectual.

Why? Because the person prayingwas asking for the wrong thing!

If you expect God to answer yourprayers you must ask Him for thingsthat are within the realm of His will.

Christ said, "... Not my will but thinebe done . . . ." Notice how John was inspired to express it: "And this is theconfidence that we have in him, that, ifwe arb any thing acrnrding to hir will,

he heareth us; and if we know that hehear us, whatsoever we ask, we knowthat we have the petitions that wedesired of him" (I John 5: 14-15 ) .

What is God's will, and where canwe find it?

We find the will of God expressedthroughout His Word, the Bible. Wemust search the Scriptures if we are toknow what God wishes us to pray forand what kind of prayer He willrespond to.

Of course, the most basic startingpoint is Matthew 6, where the traditional "Lord's Prayer" outline is found. These principles are basic and fundamental. Our article "The Answer toUnanswered Prayer" gives much instrucbon and help in understanding how touse these principles.

November-December 1971

It is not the purpose uf this article to

cover the same territory that is alreadyamply covered in reprint articles readilyavailable to church members. Rather, itis intended to point out some additional

areas where you can extend yourself inprayer. (If you do not have the abovementioned article be sure to write forit. )

How to Pray for God's Work

Most members are aware of the critical need to pray for the Work of God.In fact this is the most important areafor prayer ~ But how to do this can be aproblem.

Simply asking God to "bless theWork" or "bless the money" or "blessthe broadcast" is not sufficient. It is important to break your prayers down fineand be specific! So to pray for theWork you must know the needs of theW·ork.

How can you know those needs? There are a number of ways. First of

all be sure to read and digest all themember and Co-Worker letters fromMr. Herbert Armstrong. As you readyou will sec the needs of God's greatWork explained in vivid detail. Underline important sections. Open the lettersbefore you in your prayer closet and use

them as guidelines for praying forGod's Work.

Secondly, he certain to listen closelyto the announcements in your localChurch area every Sabbath and at BibleStudies. Often they will contain important news of God's Work. Most ministers read from the MiniJ/erial Bulletin

which they receive from Headquarters. It contains up-to-the-minute news ofGod's Work worldwide! Here you willlearn of the progress of the radio andTV broadcasts and important contacts with world leaders that God isgranting His servants. Mr. Meredithoften writes of recent developments inthe churches in the United States andthe progress of the Tomorrow's WorldBible Lectures. Mr. Ronald Dart hasnews about the Foreign EducationalService (the "Foreign Work"). As yourminister reads portions of his Bulletin,be sure to jot down pertinent points

that need YOllr prayers!

A third way to keep up with what isgoing on in the Work is to thoroughly

Page 11: International Magazine ofThe Church ofGod - Resource … News 197… · International magazine of THE CHURCH OF GOD ministering to its members scattered abroad ""eGood News ... Rizal

November-December 1971

read every issue of The GOOD NEWS.News about God's Work on the threecampuses and in the foreign offices hasappeared in the pages of The GOODNEWS, and will continue to bepresented in every issue.

Another source of information aboutthe Work of God is your TOMORROW'SWORLD magazine. Progress at the "dig"in Jerusalem, the foreign offices, activities at the three campuses includingprinting, television and other areas, havebeen discussed in recent issues. Be sureto read them and note the areas you canpray about.

Yet another source of prayer materialregarding God's Work can be found inthe radio and television logs of yourPLAIN TRUTH. In every issue you willnotice that some station listings areaccompanied by an asterisk. This indicates a neto station or a time change. When God grants us a new station or anew time it is certainly important andworthwhile to pray that He will causethe broadcast to be successful there inreaching many new listeners!

Pray for the Ministry

The prime function of the ministry ofGod is to preach the Gospel to theworld. Its secondary function is to feedthe Church of God.

God has mainly used Mr. Herbert W.Armstrong and Mr. Garner Ted Armstrong as the vanguard of the first

commission. It has fallen their responsibility to take the message to thisworld through the media of the press, radio and television. Essentially theother ministers and all non-ordainedpersonnel have backed up the ministryof these two men.

But today many of our other ministers also reach unconverted people in apersonal way. Dozens of additionalevangelists, pastors and preachingelders have been pressed into service inthe T omorrou/r World Bible Lectures. They are speaking directly to unconverted people by the thousands. Thesemen need your prayers to fulfill this important responsibility. They need yourprayers for u/isdom, understanding andthe ability to communicate their lifesaving messages to the minds of thosewho attend.

Perhaps putting you in the picture

The GOOD NEWS

will help you realize just how importantit is that you pray fervently and dailyfor those who are in the forefront ofthe Work of God in all areas!

Just think! What would YOU say

to kings, prime ministers and otherworld leaders if you were suddenly ushered into their presence? How wouldyou handle yourself in a royal palace orat a banquet attended by numerous dignitaries from foreign countries? Mr.Herbert Armstrong has been in such situations quite often lately. I Ie needsyour prayers for wisdom and discretion! And all of God's servants need yourprayers for protection as they fly aroundthe world or drive from city to city toperform the commission God has entrusted to them I

God is not using supermen to do HisWork! They are flesh and blood likeyourselves who feel pain, have emotions, weaknesses and cares. Even thegreat prophet Elijah was "a man of likepassions as we are ..." (James 5: 17).When the apostles Paul and Barnabaswere doing the Work of God amongthe people of Lystra they told them,"We also are men of like passions withyou ..." (Acts 14: 15). They were mereflesh and blood human beings withweaknesses and sicknesses, fears andproblems. Yet they were nsed by God todo a great Work!

When the brethren got behind themand prayed for them, miracles happened! On two occasions God actuallysent angels to release the Apostle Peterand others from Roman prisons! Readabout it yourself in Acts 5: 17-19;12:1-12.

Paul appealed to the brethren:"Finally, brethren, PRAY FOR us, that

the word of the Lord may have free

course [that God's Work may beallowed to be accomplished] ... andthat we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all menhave not [the] faith" (II Thes. 3:1-2).

Being a minister of God is a rewarding and much blessed occupation, but itcan also be a very dangerous one! It ishistorically true to say that most ofGod's leading ministers have been martyred for their service in God's Work. Not everyone believes as we do, brethren, and not everyone is reasonableabout it. God's ministers need divine

9

protection and hel p to f reely fulfill theircommission! Pray often and ferventlyabout this.

Pray Thankfully

All of our prayers should be mingledwith gratitude toward Gud fur all theblessings He so abundantly andfrequently "dumps" on all of us. Godinstructs us, "... Be ye thankful . . . doall in the name of the Lord Jesus, giv

ing thanks to God and the Father byhim" (Col. 3:15, 17).

We should thank God just as fer

vently after we receive what we askedfor as we were fervent when we prayedfor it!

God has blessed us with a greatlyincreasecl circulation of our literature. We have been granted many more radioand television stations in recent years.New churches are being constantlyraised up all over the world. More dedicated men are being ordained to theministry. Our building program inPasadena and elsewhere has grownthroughout the years, providing a fineand appropriate setting for the trainingof tomorrow's leaders. God has seen usthrough one financial crrsis afteranother. Let's never neglect to thankHim for all these blessings fervently, and often!

Pray for Those Not 10 theMinistry

In recent years the importance ofnon-ministerial personnel has becomeincreasingly evident in the Work ofGod. Today thousands in God's Workare not ordained ministers. Yet many ufthese people hold critical and keypositions in the Work. These men areemployed in vital editorial, press, legal, administrative and other areas. TheWork of God needs them. And they inturn need your prayers and support.

The writers for all of our Ambassador College publications need to be inspired by God if they are to say thecorrect things in the right way.Wouldn't you wish for God's inspiration if you had to sit down and write anarticle to millions of PLAIN TRUTH andTOMORROW'S WORLD readers? Wherewould you start? How would you knowyour "proofs" would stand the test of

THE SIN OFINDIFFERENCE

Indifference, apathy, nonchalance and lack of concern forothers are the signs of our calloused, uninvolved age. Couldthese attitudes have rubbed off on you without your realiz-

ing it? Check on yourself by reading this article.

by Walter R. Sharp

M AHMOUD SLIEMAN ZAK, 15, hadone ambition in life - to become a full-fledged member of

the Palestinian guerrillas. Sitting in theshade of a building near a highway inGaza, fondly handling a grenade, hewondered if he wuuld have a chance touse it on somebody.

That same sultry day, Robert Aroyo, his wife Preeti and their children MarcDaniel, age 7, and Abigail, age 4, decided to visit a seaside camp in theSinai. The police fclt there was no perilin taking such a trip. So the Aroyos setout in their car.

As they approached Gaza, a friendof Mahmoud's sauntered into the street, forcing them to slow down. At thatinstant, Mahmoud pulled the pin onhis grenade and tossed it onto the backseat of the car. There was a muffledexplosion and a wail, "Daddy, daddy,my back is broken!" And then silence-little Marc-Daniel and Abigail werekilled and Robert Aroyo's wife sufferedinjuries to the spine.

But Mahmoud was indifferent. Hedidn't care - he hated the Israelis witha vehement passion.

Such tragic stories happen all thetime all over the world. In every nation, among all races, similar eventshave occurred. Only the time, place, participants and circumstances vary.

Indifference or Indignation?

How do you react at reading such astory? Does it grab yom emotions clutch at your stomach? Does it make

you literally SICK at the gross inhumanity of man to man in this modern, reeling world?

You live in a world gone mad. Riots, muggings, murder, rape, starvation, brutality are commonplace - so muchso that unless we are on our guard wecan become oblivious and hardened towhat is happening around us.

Stop and think. You live in a worldwhere venereal disease strikes children10 to 14 years old. Where gonorrhea isAmerica's most common contagiousdisease, after the common cold andmeasles. Where young males "prance"up and down the streets in women'sslacks, high heels and long hair. Wherehigh schools are infested with prostitution rings and dope peddlers.

Every base act and foul crime imaginable is committed in our modern Godless society. But it is the rare persontoday who still has the semitivity to bemoved and shocked into a sense ofabhorrence by what is taking place!

Most people today simply don't care. They lead insulated lives. They are the"silent majority" - the mass of "uninvolved." Most don't want to be disturbed by the [acts. Most are caught upin a binge of self-love and a drivinggreed to gorge their desires and gluttheir appetites. Millions today are filledwith indifference toward the welfare oftheir country, their neighbors and any

one but themselves - having becometotally APATHETIC!

Not long ago in the Baton Rouge,Louisiana area, a group of 60 people

watched two children vainly strugglefor their lives in a local river and no

one lifted a hand to help! They were soindifferent and paJ! feeling that they didnothing at all. The children drowned.

Indifference is a deadly cancer corrupting the entire wurld in this endtime. It is a product of seltisbness andthe abundance of SIN!

It Was Prophesied

The Apostle Paul prophesied that inthese last days living itself would beperilous. He foretold that men wouldbe motivated only by an inward, thoughtless love for themselves. Theywould be incapable of showing the natural affection of one human towardanother. Unconcerned for anyone butthemselves, they would be arrogant, pushy - even fierce (II Tim. 3: 1-4) .

These are people so caught up in theswirl of their own family, their ownlives, that they can nonchalantly watchtwo children fight a losing battle fortheir lives and not lift a finger tohelp.

Brethren, it is our materialistic, grasping, competitive, "keeping up with theJoneses" way of life that spawns thisshoulder-shrugging. indifferent "whocares?" attitude! We need to realizethat this is the typical attitude of thesociety in which we live. You and I livein a world permeated with just such anapproach to life!

AND IT HAS INFLUENCED US! Thatfact we need to recognize and ponder.

Because sin would become so preva-

lent and simply be taken as the norm,Jesus predicted that some in God'sChurch would lose their love and concern for others. Some, He said, wouldbecome so passive and indifferent to theappalling, shocking conditions of theirenvironment that they would becomespiritually cold! "And because iniquity[lawlessness - sin] shall abound, thelove [of God and righteousnessJ ofmany shall uax cold" (Matt. 24: 12) .He indicated some would become sohardcncd to rampant lawlessness, theywould even leave the Church ofGod!

Why wiII they leave I Because thosewho take the sins of this world forgranted and cannot sigh and cry forthe abominations done in it are goingto have that very approach to their OWNsins and faults! They will be unable tobe moved or stirred by articles, sermons,or other correction they receive.

Do You "Sigh and Cry"?

The prophet Ezekiel wrote about ourdays. One hundred twenty years afterancient Israel had been taken into captivity (around nu B.C.), he prophesiedabout a time of future national depravityand resultant captivity of Israel. Ezekielreceived the worJs of GoJ intendedespecially for the peoples of theWestern democratic nations of theBritish Commonwealth and the UnitedStates.

Notice what God showed him was tohappen in our lifetime: "And the gloryof the God of Israel was gone up fromthe cherub, whereupon he was, to thethreshold of the house. And he calledto the man clothed with linen, whichhad the writer's inkhorn by his side; And the Lord said unto him, Gothrough the midst of the city, throughthe midst of Jerusalem, and set a markupon the foreheads of the men thatsigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through thecity, and smite: let not your eyespare, neither have ye pity . . . but comenot near any man upon whom is the

the WHOLE world! Yet those whom Godis going to protect are shocked and arestirred to action by the conditions ofsociety - those who cry out to God,when they notice the appalling conditions around them, "Thy kingdomcome!" and really mean it.

Can you sincerely say "Thy kingdomcome" when you see some poorwretched male dressed like a womanin women's slacks and long hair? Areyou moved with compassion when yousee a ragged blind man playing anaccordion with cup in hand on somesidewalk? Do conditions in society reallywrench your emotions?

You need to think deeply about thecontrast between God's way of life andthe way of carnal man. Indifference inthe face of sin, be it the nation's sinsor your own personal sins, will KILL

you - both physically and spiritually! The unconcerned, nonchalant Laodi

ceans mentioned in Revelation 3: 14-18are specifically characterized as being"lukewarm." These are the ones whomust go through the great tribulationand in many cases suffer death becauseof their easy tolerance of evil and sin. These individuals are actually membersof the Church of God, but have becomeinfected with the cancer of indifference.

They are not so "cold" as to turntheir backs on the Church and on God,but neither arc they "hot" enough to bereally concerned and to overcome themselves. They no longer htlnger and thirstfor righteousness. They have lost muchof that loyalty and patriotism for God- that sensitivity and abhorrence toward all wrong. No human sufferingseems to reach their aloof, calloused, fleshly hearts. Nothing moves them totears; nothing stirs their compassion orcauses them to express deep anguish forthe cruel suffering of mankind.

They are self-satisfied, smug, complacent, lethargic, thinking they haveneed of nothing.

In the book of Hebrews, Paul showsthat general indifference toward ourspiritual responsibilities can lead towillful sin. And even the unpardonablesin can be the result of an indifferent,"I don't care" approach to God (Heb.10:23-29).

Brethren, we must not co-exist withsin. We MUST NOT COMPROMISE with

11

sin, thereby learning to "live with" ortolerate obvious weaknesses we know wehave. We must keep moving forward- ouercoming - not allowing ourselvesto become infected with the easygoingway of the world!

There is a way that indifference canbe overcome and eradicated from yourdisposition. If you want to rid yourselfof this spiritual cancer, put into continual action the following principles:

1. Observe Man's Present Plight.Think deeply about the misery of thisworld as it wallows in its sins. Millionsin Pakistan have suffered unbearably inthe throes of civil war. Millions inAfrica, including innocent little children, are severely malnourished. Hungerand starvation stalk the earth.

Even in our affluent Western countries, millions suffer from mental illnessand other diseases, and thousands commit suicide in hopeless desperation yearly. The facts are appalling, wherever youlook. Why? Hunger, disease, war andtwisted, wretched lives are the resultof man's way WITHOUT GOD l As theApostle Paul explained:

"And even as they did not like toretain God in their knowledge, Godgave them over to a reprobate mind,to do those things which are notconvenient; being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full ofenvy, murder, debate, deceit ..." (Rom.1 :28-29).

Don't hide your eyes from the thingshappening in this world. Man is reapingthe penalty for sin! All these wretchedconditions are the automatic results ofSIN! Read the rest of Paul's statementin verses 29-32. Then WATCH, PRAY,and deeply realize the resultant miserybeing endured by billions of humans ~

2. Contrast the World's Way WithGod's Way. A truly faithful Christianwill be leading a joyous, happy, abundant life. He has peace of mind, freedom from worry, fears, anxiety. Heknows what is beyond this physical existence. He has a driving, inspiring goal inlife and knows how to attain it.

Yes, he has trials, but he knows why

and takes them in a right attitude. Heis in God's hands and he knows it. Hehas real, deep, inner PEACE AND JOY

"GOOD evening ladies and gentlemen: We1come to the fightof the century," barks the

his block - Mr. or Mrs. John Q.Average-Christian, alias 'Push -over' orsometimes known as 'Old Easy Prey' bytheir opponents."

A Different Kind of Fight

Farfetched? Nonsensical? Not at all!Brethren, each of yOIl IS in a battle,

pitted against three tough. sly and cleveropponents who are literally after yourspiritual life! Your relentless foes arethree seasoned pros. Numerous victorycups adorn their trophy rooms. Manyspiritual wins are posted in their record

book - the book of death! They neverplan to retire while you're alive.

Are you in serious all-out spiritualtraining, preparing to struggle and fightthese three formidable opponents? Areyou striving to win? Or have youalready been losing out, not fully realizing what is going on?

Your spiritual battle is different frommost bouts. In any average fight thecontestants know weeks and months inadvance the exact day of their bout.Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier knewtheir "D date" and were primed andready. The long awaited day of theirfamous fight came as no surprise.

However, )'om' struggle began beforeyou were fully aware of it. The bellwhich signified the start of the boutrang loud and dear the day you werebaptized. Did you hear it?

You're in a "Title Bout" where thereare no time-outs, no quitting, no rescheduling for a "more convenienttime." In the eyes of your enemies you

are the underdog. And remember, losersin this fight get nothing.'

Strange Rules

Your ruthless opponents fight atough, dirty fight. They jump yourepeatedly anytime, any place, wheneverthey feel like it. Satan controls andinfluences Mr. Worldliness and stirs upMr. Human Nature. The "fearsomethree" work hand-in-glove with eachother, using gang tactics, three-againstone odds, comhination punching, or perhaps one on one - depending uponthe circumstances.

The brutal bullies' specialty is tobuffet you about when you least expectit, when your spiritual guard is downand your mind preoccupied with thematerial things of this life.

Needless to say, your enemies do notfight according to standard or orthodoxboxing rules. These battle-wise veteransmake their own rules to suit their ownparticular personal style.

The "ugly three" will attack you inthe ring, out of the ring, in the alley,or better yet when your back is turned. They WIll attempt to bloody your noseby causing you to sin, or knock the"wind" out of you, spiritually speaking.

Once you have been softened up andworked over by your nature ("OldSidekick") and the pulls of this world("Old POW"), Satan wants to give youa "knock-out punch." He wants to leaveyou spiritually mangled and broken.

Analyzed by Your Opponents

Floyd Patterson had a "glass jaw."What's )'0/11' biggest weakness? Softflatulent stomach - in other words justplain lethargy? Perhaps it's one or tworolls of spiritual midriff fat - problemsthat stick with you that you cannot seemto shed. Feeble constitution? Moodiness? Depression? Lack of self-control?Or a thick groggy head with no mindcontrol? Do you just get frustrated andgive in and let your body rule your mindinstead of your mind ruling your bodywith self-disciplined character?

How is your previous fight record?Have you won some of your fights, orhave you lost them all? Is your best adraw, or have you been awarded severaldecisions?

Whatever your record, realize the

The GOOD NEWS

"fearsome three" know your every weakness - and where each punch will doyou the most spiritual damage.

But You Can Win!

Wherever you live, work, and play- that is the "ring." But though sadlyoutnumbered, you do have every chanceto win.

The arena is jam-packed with spectators. Your limited ears and other sensescannot pick up the sound of their rooting and fanfare. But God's righteousangels are all there, concerned and pulling for you.

The referee is God the Father. JesusChrist is your spiritual coach, trainer andteacher. Both dearly desire that you bethe victor in this all-out, no-holds-barredFIGHT - but neither can do all yourfighting for you. You have your ownpart to do.

You have the best coach and trainerpossible. Do you pay close attention toHim? Do you STUDY diligently thecoaching manual- the Bible? If youdo, your Savior "is able to keep youfrom falling" (Jude 24).

All three of your seasoned and ruggedfoes fight dirty. Each should be considered extremely dangerous. You candefeat them only if you are in shape, train properly, and listen to your coach.

KNOW Your Enemies

Let's analyze some of the tactics yourfoes use against you.

Vicious and clever, Satan the "adversary" has a blacklist of your weaknesses. So the tempter will aim to "set you up"by putting trying circumstances beforeyou; then enemies two and three can dotheir dirty, below-the-belt work.

Satan is notorious for "behind-thescenes work" carried out in unseen ways.He specializes in beating on your headby triggering wrong thoughts.

Satan likes to divert your mind andattention from God's Kingdom, givingdoubt and discouragement an opportunity to enter. He knows your humannature and its desires - he understandsyour thoughts and actions. Block hisattacks and never give him any room.Never "give place to the devil" (Eph.4: 27). How? Don't let discouragementor evil thoughts take root in your mind.Push them out before they get a start!

15

Satan also delights m deliveringknock-out blows when you are down- discouraged - when you feel likegiving up and "throwing in the towel."So always be on GUARD against him!

"Old Sidekick" is also very deceitfuland sneaky! He uses "psychology" frequently (rationalization appeals to fleshlydesires and emotions), so beware. He'npersuade you that you never had a better "friend." Steer clear of his fancyfootwork - excuses, justifications, whitelies. He's been with you a lifetime. Heknows exactly when and where tostrike, and when to retreat and hide.

Even though Mr. Sidekick has beennear you all your life, he is really hardto get to know. He is deceitful, crafty, and extremely selfish (Jer. 17 :9). HeHATES authority, especially that of God(Rom. 8: 7). But due to familiarity, youare apt to leave your guard down aroundhim and relax. You just can't imaginea close "friend" like that would wantto hurt you.

The FBI has a list of its "ten mostwanted criminals," but your personal

Public Enemy Number One is your ownhuman nature! You are literally yourown worst enemy! Think about that.

Are you always ON GUARD againstyour human nature? Or are you a sittingduck for its feints, jabs, left hooks andright crosses? Does it always have youreeling on the ropes?

"Old POW" (pulls of the world) isno pushover either. He becomes strongerthe longer you look al him. His glamorous allure is like a constantly pullingmagnet. Look out for his strong pullingpersonality. He has hustled many asucker!

Mr. POW's favorite tactic is distracting your mind by colorful and attractive objects (sin looks good). He triesto get your attention by bright lights, arouse your curiosity, and then your nature jumps in to soften you up evenmore. Soon the strong fist of Satan willcome crashing in on an unprotectedbody or head!

Beware of POW's street fighting techniques. He usually attempts to pull hisopponents down into the gutter - themuck and mire of the world (sex sins, bars, topless go-go houses, etc.). Healso realizes whether your reaction time

and reflexes against sin have slowed

Clown ~inre the Cl~y you were .b~rtj7eCl ,Old POW really gets around. You're

likely to meet him just about anywhereyou travel. so beware and alu/ays keepyour guard tiP!

But exactly what can you do toinsure victory over these three ruggedopponents?

Get III Spiritual Shape

To begin with, you must set your willto discipline yourself and be willing toadmit the sad shape in which you probably find yourself. Realize it's naturalto be soft on ourselves and to shun afervent, zealous spiritual "workout."

Begin immediately and diligently to"work out" in your local training camp. How do you do this? Attend weeklySabbath services and Bible studies regularly. Listen attentively to your instructors - God's ministers. "Obey them thathave the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls

[guard your lives] ..." (Heb. 13:17).Pay particular attention to your ex

perienced coach, Jesus Christ, who hasalready fought these "three thugs" and won! "For in that he himself hathsuffered being tempted, he is able tosuccour them that are tempted" (Heb.2: 18). Read dally His Instruction Book, your personal training manual - theBible!

Your battle is also a race, as theApostle Paul's was (I Cor. 9:24-26).

"Know ye not that they which run ina race run all, but one receiveth theprize? So run that ye may obtain.... Itherefore so run, not as uncertainly; sofight I, not as one that beateth the air."

Do some body work, some heavytraining. Paul also wrote: "I keep undermy budy, and bring it into subjection:lest that by any means, when I havepreached to others, I myself should bea castaway" (verse 27). So strengthenyour legs by doing deep knee bends infervent prayer!

Initiate frequent push-ups. Push upand away from the table of physicalfood, and feast instead at the table ofspiritual production and growth, whichis private, daily Bible study; for "everyman that striveth for the mastery istemperate" (verse 25). And push yourself up from your night's sleep and getgoing every day! This is what will

soon develop solid spiritual muscle.Another key to success is sparring

partners - [ellou.sbip with brethrenwho are going through the same spiritual fight. Have good friendly, uplifting, stimulating conversations. Edify one another! Don't gossip or gravitate to someone who has the same general weaknesses you do, but rather those who will"provoke you to better works." Solomonsaid: "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a mansharpeneth the countenance of hisfriend" (Prov. 27:17). He also declared: "He that walketh with wise menshall be wise: but a companion of FOOLS

shall be destroyed" (Prov. 13:20).

The Spiritual Art ofSelf-Defense

Never underestimate, kid, joke with,or give an inch to your opponents. Toomany of us seem to FORGET we are ina fight. Since we can't "see" our enemies,we take them for granted and becomecomplacent. Don't give them any advantages, "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant ofhis devices" (II Cor. 2: 11 ) .

ment in some sin. Also avoid beingAvoid the ropes - actual entangle

trapped or goaded into a "corner"potential possibility to sin. Rememberin this fight you have no neutral cornerif a knockdown is scored. Your onlysafety comes from sticking close to God'

Learn to "roll with the punches,

hooks, or jabs" - bounce back asquickly as possible. If you fall down, jump back up. Never quit! "If thoufaint in the day of adversity, thystrength is smalL ... For a just manfalleth seven times, and riseth up again:but the wicked shall fall into mischief"(Prov. 24:10,16).

Develop a solid defense, using a proper stance or "on guard position." Cometo grips with the situation and formright habits. Take the initiative - beaggressive and learn to be an offensivefighter.

Keep your head up so that you cansee Satan's punches coming. "Submit

yourselves therefore to God," says theApostle James. "Resist the devil, andhe will flee from you" (James "1: 7) .

Remember, Old Sidekick loves to"cling and clench" to you. Beseech Godto aid in hrFaking his embrace. Ask Godfor power via the Holy Spirit to seeclearly your Public Enemy Number One.Let his soothing words fall on Cleaf ears(Prov. 14:12). Realize his words are allpropaganda!

And what about Mr. "Pulls of theWorld"? The corrupting influences ofthe world will tug and lure you backinto entanglement if you are not careful. Keep your distance. "Old POW"lurks in secret places to ambush inquisitive, naive people who are not con

tent with what they have. Accept the

fact that the grass is not greener on theother side of the fence. The glitter andglamour of this present evil world areonly a skin-deep facade containing rottenness and corruption within.

Don't listen to "Old POW" or swallow his "line."

But there is one more thing you musthave in order to assure final VICTORY!

Spiritual Resources

This sin-laden society, your deceitfulnature, and the invisible devil are absolutely real. But they can a11 he overcomethrough the POWER of God's Spirit! With God's help you can outsmart, outguess ancl outmaneuver yOllr opponFnts.God's Spirit within you can enable youto give a "knock-out blow" to all threeof your deadly adversaries!

Notice Philippians 2: 12-13: "Bekeener than ever to work out the salvation that God has given you with aproper sense of awe and responsibility- for it is GOD who is at work within

you, gwwg )'Olt the WILL and thePOWER to achieve His purpose" (Phillips Translation).

Jesus Christ successfully resisted Satan(Matt. 4:1, 10). He mastered himself

(Heb. 5 :7-9). He told His disciples,"Be of good cheer; for I have overcomethe world" (John 16: 33) _

Christ dwelt in the Apostle Paulthrough the Holy Spirit (Gal. 2:20).Paul said: "I can do ALL THINGSthrough CHRIST which strengthenethme" (Phil. 4: 13). He told the Christians in Rome, "We are MORE THANCONQUERORS THROUGH HIM THATLOVED US" (Rom. 8: 37). Paul was a winner!

despite trial and tribulation. His is a lifeof real FAITH. AND WHAT A LIFE! Hisphysical needs are provided and hedoesn't even need to worry about death.Every blessing and joy imaginable, throltgh obedience, comes to those whofollow God's way of life.

Be aware of the vast difference between God's way and the world'sway.

3. Be Deeply Thankful. Give Goddaily the thanks He deserves for all thatHe has given you and the way He servesyou, and deeply mean it. If you do, youwill not be indifferent about God's wayof life. You will deeply appreciate it.You'll appreciate God's Church, Histruth, and His plan for our salvation. There just will not be room for indifference.

We need to be "giving thanks alwaysfor all things unto God and the Fatherin the name of our Lord Jesus Christ"because God "giveth us [all true Christians] richly all things to enjoy" (Eph.';:20; I Tim. 6:17).

4. Abhor All Evil. The world isbeing deprived of abundant blessingsbecause of evil- sin. God commands:"Abhor that which is evil ..." (Rom.12 :9 ). Do you?

Don't be content to live with yoursins which deprive you and your familyof deep happiness. Formulate a plan ofattack and get stirred up about them.Be angry at sin, not only for what itwill do to you, but what it is, and has,and will do to the world. Yes, beANGRY at sin - God hates it. Is He

indifferent? Ask God to give you Hisattitude toward sin!

5. Cling to the Truth. Jesus said:"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wideis the gate and broad is the way [thefalse ways of the world] that leadeth todestruction, and many there be whichgo in thereat: because strait is the gateand narrow is the way [of truth] whichleadeth unto life and few there be thatfind it" (Matt. 7:13-14). "Strive toenter in at the strait gate," Christ saidin Luke 13:24.

Now that God has given you thetruth, cling to it tenaciously! "... cleave

to that which is good" (Rom. 12 :9).

Develop a "love of the truth," as Paulexhorted, so you will never be "hardened by the deceitfulness of sin" (IIThes. 2:10; Heb. 3:13).

6. Pray Daily for Christ's Return. You have the solution for the world'sills. You have been set free from spiritual ignorance which is destroying theworld (Has. 4:6). If you pray daily forChrist's return as a result of feelingdeeply for man's deprivation, you CANNOT remain indifferent!

So pray earnestly for the soon establishment of God's Kingdom when theknowledge of God will FILL the earth(Isa. 11 :9), knowing that GOD'S TRUTHwill then set the world free (John 8: 32) .

7. Do Your Part in God's Work. The world is floundering in a morassof larkadaisica l unconcern. Tt is gorgedwith excess, satiated with materialisticpleasures. The world has no drivinggoal. You HAVE'

For YOU have been called to have apart in SAVING THIS WORLD'S inhabitants from "TOTAL DESTRUCTION"!(Mal. 4:6, see original Hebrew.)

Is your heart REALLY in God's Work?Ask God to help you "catch the

vision." Ask Him to help you FULFILLyour role in the most important workon the face of the earth today!

SHAKE YOURSELF out of indifferenceand DO God's Work - be busily doingyour Father's business as Christ did(Luke 2 :49). Become "on fire," filledwith zealous concern for others! Let theoutgoing, warm, compassionate LOVE ofGod flow out of your heart and mindthrough the Holy Spirit God has givenyou (Rom. 5:5).

Loving concern is the opposite ofcarnal indifference. Love hides a multitude of sins (Prov. 10:12). Remember to sympathize and be concerned forall who suffer and are affiicted (Heb.13: 3). Stir up fervent love for others,as Peter said (I Pet. 4:8). "... For ifye do these things, ye shall never fall:For so an entrance shall be ministeredunto you abundantly into the everlastingkingdom of our Lord and Saviour JesusChrist" (II Pet. 1: 10-11 ) .

The evil cancer of indifference israpidly multiplying and destroying thismodern world. It will kill you if youallow it to take root in your heart.

Don't let it! 0
