Galveston, Texas - This year The Lone Star Rally, Texas‟s Premier Rally and one of the

largest in the United States headed up by promoter Mellissa Penland and Mark did not

disappoint. Their energy applied made this rally a favorite among riders, builders, and

vendors. But, more especially, and not often seen, one for the motorcycle enthusiasts, bikers

and spectators.

IMBBA was selected by The Lone Star Rally which celebrated its 12th year to give back to

the builders, respect, and appreciation for bringing their creations and passions to the center

stage for all to appreciate and view. By hiring IMBBA, the results are solely based in the

physical reality of the bike quality and that not of popular opinion. This system of Fit, Form,

Function, & Safety has been embraced by builders as the standard by which to judge and

recognize the talents, skills, and education needed to win the competition.

This year, the Lone Star Rally had two Bike Show Competitions. One, for the Pro Builders

held on November 1, 2013 at Pier Street # 22 along the sea wall among all the vendors. The

pro-builders requirements

to compete, you had to be

in business and be paid as

a professional builder to

compete. Here, no class

distinctions were used to

divide. The bikes were

scored on IMBBA global

Standard of points for Fit,

Form; Function, & Safety

for each attribute that make

up a functioning

motorcycle.

Judge, Charlie Hadayia Jr. (Far Right)

The “Ride-in-Show” held on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the same location was more

general in that the bikes had to start and go in gear before being accepted into the

competition which was broken down into classes selected by the promoters…… judged by

IMBBA standards.

The competition was extremely close with tie breakers in three of the classes stretching

from antique to unusual. Many three wheelers entered the competition as well. .

The close competition was challenging to the judges who were, Chief Judge Jeff Starke

and Master Judge, Charlie Hadayia Jr.

The rally, which began on October 31, through November 3rd, 2013 filled the streets of the

city, bikes were everywhere, one could almost imagine a world that cars were never

invented. As few were seen navigating among the riders. Restaurants were on their best

game and vendors generous with deals. The Rally had additional activities that spread

across the city and beaches. There was a Hot Rod Show that had some of the best

slammed creations and sported some of the muscle power of the past.

Cycle Source had their Ride-In Show moved from Wednesday due to a vicious storm that

rolled in the beginning day of the rally and presented their bikes on 21st street on Saturday

along with Paul Yaffee‟s Baddest Bagger

Competition across the way. There was so

much eye candy, sunglasses appeared

sticky.

The show was surrounded and packed

with spectators; bikes in every space

possible, vendors lined every avenue with

standing room only crowds and custom car

show that displayed some of America‟s top

muscle cars and trucks. Bands playing and

entertainment was had by all.

Seats are a valuable consideration in bike competitions and for the most part scores competitive one bike to the other. But, seats on your motorcycle is also judged for Fit, form, function, egonomics, estitics, originality and fabrication and last but not least Safety.

If the seat is selected that meets a theme or becomes an estethic symbol of the bike as a focus point. Velcrowing the seat into place often takes points away. Velcrow breaks

down looses its clutching ability to its counter part causing the rider to possibly be dislodged from a control point…….very bad news. When selecting an over the counter seat for your bike, while a safe bet as manufactured seats are of good quality right from the manufacturer. IMBBA uses that as a standard in seat scoring and has no higher value. Judges then look for how it was mounted, as a consideration to raising the score. Any body fabraction to blend the seat to its environment or design can add points. Stitching is often looked at to ensure a water tight integrity. Using the wrong needle size in stiching with that of the thread size can allow water to seep in and attack the foam thus destroying the life from within. Another consideration is if you monogram a seat surface and the stiches don‟t have a high stich count. Water again can enter the seats interior. IMBBA judges then stop progressing the points in that category.

Judges regularly inspect the seat for gel-pacs‟ while adding a point for the consideration of the riders comfort a point can also be lost if the reassembly fo the seat by the installer was not performed properly. What one point giveth, another can be taken away.

Be sure when considering a seat for your bike, custom or otherwise, that the mounting and estitics of the bike are addressed and compliment the build. Shop around, don‟t let the cost of a seat give you a sense of security that the price assures good points in competitions. Or you may find yourself “Sitting this one out”

“For IMBBA, 2014 may be our biggest

year yet as we celebrate our 9th year.”

Reflecting on 2013, we have fostered in

more certifications and education courses

than previous years. While the global level

of our industry continues to expand. Soon

the representatives will be completing

their certifications and join the ranks of

IMBBA. Which contries include: Argentina,

Brazil, Australia and China. Whith the

possiblity by 2015 of IMBBA opening the

global market of competition with a World

Championship event.

All this brings in and affirms the standard set forth by its association and membership to the top. Many

thanks to the true professionals of our industry who have supported our efforts faithfully. It does my

heart good to see that IMBBA pride in our badge is being displayed on builders websites and in

advertising, Our facebook page continues to gain notority and fans. But the real measuring of our

professional services is being valued in the promoters finding our judging standards favorable for their

events. Many of our events are long and standing where we are requested to return. While sounds like

bragging it isn’t. Simply we see the signs that the motorcycle professional industry has arrived. That the

services we offer the consumer side of our industry can rely on our third party process of certification

rather trust a individuals marketing arm to sell people on their own self confidence and measurement of

skills and talents they profess.

Having said that. Our standards of certification are serious and when an individual reaches a level to be

thrid party certified, I want to reminfd the public that to ensure what level they are certified to perform.

Often being a bike builder certified obviously, one should not contract them to perform a build that they

are not certify to perform. A bike builder certified is not a Master Bike Builder just because they received

a Bike Builders certificate. Meaning they may not have the skills level or profiency to perform building

frames etc. So be sure you understand the standards set forth by IMBBA and the skills, education of the

certified individal to those standards before having them build you a motorcycle and or repair one for

that matter. Thus IMBBA’s levels for certification.

On behalf of IMBBA staff, members, and professionals in all eleven countries We wish everyone a

properous new year and pray the holiday seasons bring rewards to everyone and they arrive in 2014

safe and healthy. - Jeff Starke IMBBA President – Founder 2005

IMBBA HALL OF FAME JAY ALLEN Presides When more than 500,000 motorcycles roared out of the Pentagon s parking lot for Rolling Thunder s 25th anniversary ride in 2012, five bikes honoring the five branches of the military led the way.

On Friday, those same five bikes were lined up insides the Buena High School automotive shop, while the man who organized the construction of the event Invited by new auto tech teacher Alex Wolf took over class for the day. Jay Allen shared the story of the five tribute bikes with high-schoolers for the first time. After touring through veteran s hospitals and military bases around the

country, the stop at Buena was a landmark for Allen. This is a little blessing for me, this is cool, he said. A racer, builder, and former owner of the renowned Broken Spoke Saloon, the Bisbee resident rallied some of the best motorcycle builders alive to construct the tribute bikes after his own U.S. Army bike inspired the project. I don t have a lot of love for politicians these days but I have undying love for the people who are willing to protect our country, Allen told the students.

After sharing the story behind each bike, Allen fielded questions and let them check

out the bikes. Buena sophomore Brandon Talbot wasted little time, climbing on the U.S. Navy bike, his clear favorite. It s just the style of it, the wide tire in the back, the silver, the shocks, Talbot said. Constructed by Dar Holdsworth, the bike s foot pegs are made out of actual arresting cables from the U.S.S. Enterprise provided by the Navy. Talbot s uncle has built a bike before and Talbot would definitely be into constructing one himself someday, he said. A first year auto student, Talbot s always liked working on cars and looking at engines. It s just cool, he said. Another Buena sophomore and first year auto student, Pete Weisner, said he s probably going to start getting into working on bikes more after seeing the tribute bikes. His favorite was the Coast Guard bike, made by Mike Thomas from the Kiwi Indian Motorcycle Company. That Indian was pretty amazing, Weisner said. He appreciates having guests like this come in the classroom and share what they do. It s nice that people come out here and show the up-and-coming generations, give them an idea of the things they can accomplish,

I m trying to go a new direction trying to get the kids attention, said Wolf, the new auto tech teacher. He wants to introduce motorcycles into the program to get the

students excited and have them work on something new. Even though it s two wheels, it s still automotive, Wolf said. It s the kind of thing that gets kids excited about math and engineering, by showing them the application of those classes.

This is where it s going to start where everything makes sense, said Jeremy Clemons,

the collision repair teacher. The kids get to see what they can do by applying academic principles.

Clemons has experience riding bikes but has never worked on anything like what he saw on Friday. In fact, he may be Wolf s first convert.

I want to do a bike now, he said.

EDITORIAL SENT FROM THE

HEART

Sent in by Jim Giuffra IMBBA Master Bike

Builder Level II Jackson, CA.

Merry Christmas Jeff -

This might be some food for thought on an editorial for

your news letter. We were interviewed for the Discovery build off show by Kim at Pilgrim which you

know about. Some of the questions were related to bad mouthing & putting down our fellow builders.

They want controversy. I told

them flat out that I wouldn't put

down other builders or their

work. Our work & our history ( 4

World championships & over 100

show wins) speak for itself. I also

told them I wouldn't tolerate our

competition making ugly

personal remarks about the AFT

Girls or Discovery encouraging

that behind the scenes. We

would be glad to trash talk if it

was in good fun how ever. We

were turned down. We have 17

corporate sponsors because we build cool shit & are good ambassadors for our industry. We're

respected by our peers, & the corporate & public sides of our industry. I wouldn't change who we are

just for some TV time. A lot of people in this industry will sell their souls to be on TV & it's making us all

look like Neanderthals. Having us on their show would have reached the most numbers in age & gender

demographics plus the possible cash flow from our sponsors. Kim didn't pitch that angle as far as I know.

She was nice to us though. Have a good holiday.
