1 International Orientation Guide Congratulations! You’ve been accepted into one of the student residences at La Trobe University. There is now some important information that you need to know when you arrive in Australia. Please note the following important arrival information: Our main Accommodation Services Office is located within Menzies College and open from 9am – 7pm Monday – Friday, and 9am – 5pm Weekends. When the main office is not open to help you with your enquiries and check-ins we have an after-hours service available called the Night Manager. The Night Manager is contactable by phone from 5pm – 9am Monday – Friday and 5pm – 9am Weekends. If you arrive after hours at the Melbourne Campus, you will need to ensure that you get dropped off at your student residence. Chisholm, Glenn and Menzies Colleges are all located inside the La Trobe campus and Graduate House and University Lodge are located very close on the outskirts (a five minute walk from campus). Do remember that your room will be a very plain and empty space when you first arrive, but we encourage you to make your room your own by adding posters and photos to brighten the area. You may also notice that there are not many students around the campus when you first check-in. This is because the academic semester hasn’t yet started and many students won’t move in until late February. However, to ensure you have the best possible experience when you first arrive, we have dedicated International Student Ambassadors to assist you in acclimatising to the campus and responsible for facilitating a vast array of exciting and fun activities specifically designed to get you out and about around Melbourne and meeting new people (internationals and local Australians). Please do remember that if you have concerns or questions at any time during your stay in the student residences, you are more than welcome to stop by Accommodation Services. If you are interested in doing some travelling or exploring on your own, Accommodation Services has a fantastic collection of guide books and travel information on Melbourne and Australia, and you are most welcome to stop by and have a browse. From ResFest (the Accommodation Services’ exclusive orientation program) and the International Welcome Program to residence balls and inter-residence/inter-campus sporting competitions, I’m on it. If you or your residents have suggestions about events you’d like to see, or would like to speak to a staff member at any stage, please get in touch!

OUR INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADORSAccommodation Services’ International Ambassadors are later year students who have been selected and trained to assist you as part of the Accommodation Services’ International Welcome Program and beyond. You will meet all of these students during your first few weeks on site, and we encourage you to speak with them first should you have any questions or queries regarding your time on residence. If they are unable to assist, they can always point you in the right direction!

DEAN, GLENN COLLEGEHello, and welcome to Glenn College!

My name is Dean and I will be one of your International Ambassadors this year. Living at Glenn College is a great opportunity, and having resided here for the past year, I can honestly say that it will be some of the best years of your life. Throughout your journey into Australia, and particularly college life, I will be here to help ease the transition and provide assistance in any way that I can. I am keen to meet you all and watch you transition into life at Glenn, where your time will be filled with new experiences, great friends and the creation of endless memories. See you in the near future!

JUSTINA, GLENN COLLEGEMy name is Justina and I will be your International Ambassador on Glenn College this year.

I am now a second year student at La Trobe and spent my first year living on Glenn College. I am from England, therefore being an international student myself I have firsthand experience. I’ll be available to help with anything you might need, even if you think it’s silly please ask. Menzies is one truly life changing place and I hope you find the same sense of family and support that I have. Can’t wait to meet you and share this incredible opportunity!

MICHAEL, CHISHOLM COLLEGEHi everyone my name is Michael.

Firstly, I would like to welcome you all to La Trobe as an international student! After moving out of home myself in 2014 from a relatively small town, I can understand the challenges that you may face living in a unique city like Melbourne, which is why I am here to assist you with any troubles you may face and make you feel right at home. Living at Chisholm is an amazing experience, where you will make friends that you will never forget.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all, and having a great time with you in 2016!

RACHEL, CHISHOLM COLLEGEHi my name is Rachel and I'll be one of your International Ambassadors for Chisholm in 2016!

Academic AssistanceAll the colleges within Accommodation Services are academic colleges and have programs in place to help you achieve your potential.

For first year students we have a team of Study Mentors. Mentors run Study Focus Groups in different discipline areas, on Monday evenings. You are welcome to call on the Mentors for advice, or you may join in a Study Focus Group for all the support it offers.

Experienced students are another source of support in your subjects. The Accommodation Services Colleges are helpful kinds of places. Look out students on your floor, annexe or tower in your college who study the same subjects. They will be more than willing to help you.

Accommodation Services also provides a fantastic textbook buying scheme to help you cope with the high cost of text books. Fill out the form at Accommodation Services and we can supply you with recommended texts, on loan.

We encourage you to make the most of all the Accommodation Services residences have to offer. In addition, the University has sources of academic support. Advisers of the Language and Academic Skills Units help students with their academic adjustment.

If any of these dilemmas sound familiar then you’re likely to need the details and locations of La Trobe’s local shopping centres and malls.

The following shopping centres are within walking distance, accessible by tram or bus or a short drive in a friend’s car.

Polaris 3083 Shopping Centre

Brand new shopping centre, only 10 minutes walk from Accommodation Services, consists of cafés, restaurants, retail shopping, Woolworths supermarket, medical centre and connected to the new community centre.

Northland Shopping Centre

Bundoora Square and Aldi

Located along the tram line (Number 86, towards RMIT), this shopping centre has two supermarkets, several banks and various speciality stores including butchers and a bakery. The Aldi is located one stop prior to Bundoora Square and can be located across the road on the corner of Grimshaw Street and Plenty Road.
