Constrained large-eddy Simulation (CLES) method A Reynolds stress and heat flux CLES method has been proposed. It makes the pure LES of wall-bounded turbulent flows feasible on moderate grid and has been successfully applied to simulate many turbulent flows. The following figures shows the vorticity structures in flow past cylinders (left) and a commercial aircraft (right) are predicted by CLES method.

Continuous detonation engine (CDE) CDE has been studied experimentally, numerically and theoretically. Two seconds running of the designed combustor was achieved in experiments. The following figure depicts the propagation of multi-detonation fronts.

Theory on compressible turbulence Helmholtz decomposition technique is used to study the multi-scale and multi-process dynamics of compressible turbulence. The following figure shows the complicated structure in a compressible turbulent flow.

Transition of pipe flows with rough surfaces Stability analysis has been conducted for pipe flows with rough surface. A scaling form has been proposed for all flow states. The following figure indicates that the scaled friction factor measurements collapse onto a universal curve.

Structure ensemble dynamics (SED) theory SED theory has been developed, which emphasizes the Lie-group symmetry of the problem with a set of new concepts. The following figure demonstrates that the SED theory has accurate prediction for different flows.

Novel nondestructive testing method based on contact resonance of a piezoelectric cantilever We proposed a new nondestructive testing method/system based on the contact resonance of a piezoelectric unimorph cantilever, using local contact stiffness as the identification parameter. This method is more promising for NDT in composites and elastography in superficial organs/tissues.

Redundant control and dynamic control allocation New problems from the redundant control on system performance have been studied. Necessary and sufficient condition of strict decreasing of the quadratic performance index when the columns of the input matrix are increased is established. Control allocation among redundant control inputs when there are uncertainties in the effective matrix or faults occur is presented.

Relative velocities and positions of satellites moving in a formation. (Li, et al., IEEE

Cooperative control of multi-agent systems Striking progress on this research topic has been made, such as: proposing a systematic consensus region approach for studying the consensus control; addressing the distributed tracking for linear multi-agent systems with leaders of nonzero control inputs; studying the effects of measurement/ communication errors and disturbances on consensus of multi-agent systems.

the reconstruction of the mandible with finite element method.

Tissue and cell biomechanics We develop a new TFM method to determine cell traction forces and then investigating the interaction between single cardiac myocyte and the elastic substrate. We also carry out biomechanics of musculoskeletal systems, dental mechanics, and optimization of artificial prosthesis.

Biomechanics and Medical Engineering

Tissue and Cardiovascular Mechanics Given two major risk factors (i.e., abnormal mural and shear stresses) for coronary artery diseases, we carry out the analysis of tissue mechanics and hemodynamics in the study of coronary circulation and diseases.

(A) Coronary arterial trees of mice of different ages reconstructed from Micro-CT images. (B) Blood flows

in a patient’s LMCA coronary arteries.

(A) Experimental and Simulated calcium spark based on anomalous subdiffusion. (B) two local Ca2+ waves collision.

Calcium Signal We develop an anomalous subdiffusion model to simulate calcium spark, which fit perfectly with experimental results, solving the full-width at half maximum paradox. Based on the anomalous subdiffusion model, calcium waves are also investigated theoretically and experimentally.

From 2009 to 2014, faculties of The MES are granted many projects and funding, with a total amount of more than 262 million RMB. The funding mainly comes from • National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) • Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) • Ministry of Education of China (MOE) • Industry and other sources.

Funding

Two distinct features of funding: • For each year from 2009-2014, the successful rate

of the NSFC proposals submitted by the faculty members is greater than 50%. the highest among all the departments of mechanics in the major universities of China.

• Faculty members have successfully applied many prestigious and important projects from NSFC and Ministry of Science and Technology of China.
