Rochester, New York, is many things: a center of business, a place of emerging technologies, and a city possessing a quality of life that is one of the best in the nation. The third largest city in New York State, it’s a place of landmark history and cultural diversity. Rochester was an early home to abolitionists and a major stop on the Underground Railroad. Susan B. Anthony was arrested in her Rochester home for her historic decision to vote. Frederick Douglass lived and published The North Star in Rochester. The founder of Rochester-based Eastman Kodak Company George Eastman is heralded as the father of modern popular photography and the inventor of motion picture film. Founded here, Bausch and Lomb manufactured 4,000,000 pounds of glass between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and August 1944.

Today, Rochester is still one of the nation’s most engaging cultural centers and a hub of entrepreneurial activity.

The museums and galleries offer a plethora of cultural activities including exhibit openings, hands-on demonstrations, and world-class lectures. While you are in Rochester, be sure to visit the Memorial Art Gallery and ARTISANworks, a one-of-a-kind venue featuring work both by local artists and household names in a 60,000-square-foot former ammunition plant. The galleries, featuring both local and international artists, are too numerous to list! You’ll see a few of them during the Gallery Tour events. Check the VisitRochester visitor’s guide for an overview of the area galleries.

Rochester is the gateway for many wonderful day trips across New York State. The Corning Museum of Glass, for example, is about an hour and a half from downtown Rochester. While you are there, be sure to check out the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Another short ride from downtown Rochester are the famous Finger Lakes, home to fantastic wineries, and even more fantastic scenery. Niagara Falls is a quick trip from downtown Rochester, but don’t forget your passport if you’d like to see the view from Canada.

Entertainment in Rochester covers a wide spectrum: from a world-class philharmonic orchestra to top-notch regional theatre, from major Broadway touring productions to small theatre groups, and from bright lights and pulsing disco to cozy jazz houses. Restaurants are around every corner and are ready to treat you to great Rochester hospitality.

We look forward to showing you all Rochester has to offer and to welcoming you to the 2013 ISGB Gathering!

The Release-A-Bead project continues to expand glass bead experiences all over the world. Through the donations of ISGB beadmakers, people from California to New Zealand have found beads and posted on the Release-A-Bead website at www.releaseabead.com.

This summer, we will release beads in the Rochester area to generate interest and excitement prior to the Gathering. Fifty of these beads will include “Golden Tickets,” which will give the lucky finder a free entry to our Saturday, July 27, Bead Bazaar!

Share your love of glass beads with a stranger – maybe they will fall in love just like you did! Please send your bead(s), along with the form available on the Release-A-Bead website, to the address below.

Silent AuctionDeadline for Mail-In Submission: June 30, 2013. Submission may also be dropped off in person at on-site check in.

The Silent Auction is an important event for our organization and for our fundraising efforts. We encourage you to donate a bead or bead-related item to the Silent Auction. As a bidder, this is a wonderful opportunity to add to your collection of beads and to help support the ISGB educational programs.

Please send your donation before the conference begins. Receiving them in advance of the Gathering allows the wonderful volunteers that work on this event the opportunity to document your donation, complete the bid sheets, and prepare the auction display boards before everyone arrives at the conference. We thank you for your help. If necessary, last-minute donations can be collected during conference on-site check in.

Please include your name, the retail price of your donation, and a brief description of the item(s). Please send your donation, to be received no later than June 30, to the address below:

We hope that all conference attendees will volunteer at least four hours during the conference, however, more hours would be greatly appreciated.

Host Hotel Award for VolunteerismIn addition to the ISGB sponsored scholarships, volunteers working six or more hours at the Gathering will be eligible to win the ISGB and Host Hotel Award for Volunteerism. The Award will include a full-conference registration and a three-night stay in an upgraded room at the conference hotel. The ISGB –Beads of Courage Community Project Deadline for Donation: June 30, 2013

All Creatures Big and SmallThe ISGB – Beads of Courage Community Project is a wonderful opportunity to exhibit your work (beads are not for sale) as well as give a little something back to the Rochester community. This non-juried show is open to all ISGB members and is a wonderful way for new beadmakers to participate in their first show, as well as a good opportunity to present their work in response to a specific theme.

The theme for this year’s show is All Creatures Big and Small. What an exciting excuse to unleash your imagination: sculpture, murrini, and more.

Each artist is limited to one entry and beads will be on display throughout the Gathering. We will once again have Attendees’ Choice awards. The two artists receiving the two highest number of votes will each be awarded a gift certificate!

In the spirit of giving, we plan to present our project to the Golisano Children’s Hospital on Sunday at the close of the Gathering. Golisano has been ranked one of the nation’s best in Pediatric Orthopedics in U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 edition of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals. Please ship your bead in a well-wrapped, sturdy box and be certain to insure your package.

All entries must be received before the Gathering.

Awakening the Vision – Creative DiscoveriesDeadline for Application: April 30, 2013

This year’s juried show for the Gathering will once again feature pendants. This event is open to all ISGB members and offers a wonderful opportunity to present your best work in response to a specific theme.

As beadmakers, we often become complacent in our day-to-day torch sessions. We become comfortable with certain techniques and designs. As we do, our vision begins to fade and the passion smolders. This is a challenge to you to rediscover your vision. Play with new techniques, wild ideas, and think outside the box. We encourage you to take this creative journey, whether you are a novice or have years of experience, open the door to creative discoveries and show us what you find!

All beads must be made into singular pendants and need to be strung on something for display. For example, use a short piece of ribbon, leather, cord, or chain. Up to six pieces may be submitted if you are accepted into the show. All pieces must be for sale. An inventory list with artist contact information and retail price(s) MUST be included with pieces when they are submitted for the show. No exceptions will be made. Selected artists will receive 50 percent of the retail price of the sold items. Payments and any unsold pieces will be returned via insured mail.

If SELECTED for the show, please send your bead pendants, retail price list, artist information, and shipping address by June 30, 2013 to: ISGB Pendant ShowLet's Bead!349 West Commercial StreetEast Rochester, New York 14445585-586-6550

Learn the secrets of how to shoot your jewelry and glass beads with a professional photographer and glass artist. Understand basic photography, the qualities of good lighting, composition, background materials, the proper use of an 18 percent gray card, how to set your camera’s menus, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, shooting mode, color balance, and quality settings. Photograph your own pieces during class at lighting stations. Bring your own DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses and manual exposure to learn the proper settings for photographing pieces. Point and shoot fixed lens cameras without these features are inadequate, will not perform as needed, and are not recommended. Students should bring up to 20 art pieces to photograph. Photoshop will be demonstrated and students should bring a laptop with Photoshop CS5 or CS6 Standard or Academic already installed. www.dougbaldwinphoto.com

The Corning Museum of Glass AdventureReservation deadline: June 15

Don’t miss this amazing opportunity! Join glass bead artist and Corning resident, Marshall Hyde, for an incredible adventure. Corning, New York, has long been acknowledged as America’s great historic glass center, known since the 19th century as “Crystal City” because of the glass manufacturing and cutting industries located there. It is also home to The Corning Museum of Glass, which holds the world’s most extensive collections on the art, science, and industry of glass. Trip participants will meet with curators from the Museum and enjoy special tours of the galleries and collections which includes Life on a String: 35 Centuries of the Glass Bead. The Director of The Studio will guide visitors through the museum’s world-class teaching facility and visitors will be given an orientation and private tour of the Rakow Library’s newly renovated facilities. This is the library of record for glass and research projects. There will be plenty of time to shop in the glass Marketplace at Corning, or to wander through the Gaffer District on historic Market Street to see the new exhibition, curated by Marshall Hyde, featuring beadmakers from around the world at Exhibit A Gallery.

Lunch and Afternoon with Milon TownsendReservation deadline: June 15, 2013

This studio tour, lunch, and demonstration with respected and well-known artist Milon Townsend promises to be a wonderful event! Milon captures elegance, energy, and expression in his glass sculptures; and his imaginative approach to traditional glass objects such as goblets is remarkable. What a rare opportunity to spend the afternoon with this amazing artist.

You will begin with a terrific luncheon catered by Milon’s wife, Kiyoko, on the lawn of their beautiful five-acre property in Hilton, New York. Enjoy a stroll on the 1.25-mile nature trail after lunch.

Tour Milon’s incredible “studios-within-a-studio,” which includes flameworking, kiln casting, cold working, lamination and assembly, and photography. He will also offer a detailed flameworking demonstration of a sculptural piece, as well as show various and unique aspects of the lost wax and kiln casting process.

Imagine… a fantastic lunch, demonstrations that define Milon’s distinctive style, and a studio tour while enjoying the beautiful scenery – all with the artist!

Open Torch EventsWednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, torches will be set up and open for anyone to use. This is a great time to watch a “pro” show you that technique you just cannot seem to master – or try a new one. Open Torch is also the place where manufacturers will showcase new torches, equipment, and glass as well! There will be 30-minute time limits on torches in an effort to allow everyone who would like to use them the opportunity to do so. Time limits will be enforced as needed. Please bring your safety glasses and personal hand tools.

Gallery TourThis very special evening, a Night of Glass in Rochester, will include the following exhibitions, a collection of three outstanding individual events.

Indelible: A Collection of Personal Narratives Expressed in Art Glass BeadsIn everyone's lives are moments that stand out, moments that are remembered more clearly than others. What makes these moments unforgettable may vary greatly. Maybe it was doing something for the first time – or for the last time. Sometimes, all it can take to transport us back to that moment is a smell, a word, or a sound, and we can play that memory over and over again in our mind’s eye. Done in conjunction with our recent 20th anniversary, this exhibition highlights the diversity in one-of-a-kind bead and jewelry design from artists around the world. Indelible artists were asked to pluck out the details from their most memorable or special experiences and to translate them into glass using beads as their brush strokes and jewelry as a canvas to paint a memorable picture.

Awakening the Vision – Creative DiscoveriesAs beadmakers we often become complacent in our day-to-day torch sessions. We become comfortable with certain techniques and designs. As we do, our vision begins to fade and the passion smolders. Artists were asked to challenge themselves to rediscover their vision, play with new techniques, and explore unique ideas outside of their normal creative circle. Whether you are a novice beadmaker or have years of experience, we invite you to enjoy this showcase of new artistic journeys. You might just open the door to creative discoveries in your own work! For information on how to submit an entry, please see page 7.

Geometric – A Juxtaposition of the Circle and the SquareMany endeavors in beadmaking focus on creating a shape that is circular or square in one dimension or another. Both the circle and the square are utilized in so many shapes and techniques ranging from spherical ball beads, donuts, and discs to cubes, focal pendants, and rectangular bricks. Artists were invited to submit a bead featuring a circular or square shape either in construction or surface decoration. This eclectic array of geometric shapes highlights dimensional artworks inspired by the infinite circle and the edgy square. The angles and spheres for this juried show were endless! Be certain not to miss these innovative, small treasures.

The Silly Bead Contest: The Wizard of Oz Goes SteampunkA favorite event every year and Rochester promises to be one of the best. This year’s Silly Bead Contest is all about imagination and combination. We challenge you to create something amazing in glass. And metal. And mixed media. Oh My! The sky’s the limit for a miniature masterpiece which incorporates characters or scenes from the iconic Wizard of Oz movie, with a steampunk twist.

Imagine flying monkeys with wind-up keys; riveted metal-clad Munchkins; the tin woodsman made out of clockwork and gears; the wicked witch in a leather jacket and aviator goggles.

The possibilities are endless, skill level is completely irrelevant, and fun is mandatory. The only qualifications to participate are that you a) attend the Gathering, b) make something from glass and whatever else you find lying around, and c) plan a really good bribe for the judges. You might just take home one of our fabulous prizes. And one for your little dog, too!

The Bead BazaarThe Bead Bazaar will be the center of all activity during the day on Saturday. Artists attending the conference may choose to experience selling their work by having a table at The Bead Bazaar. This annual event is a wonderful and fun-filled opportunity to sell beads and finished jewelry to both Gathering attendees and the general public. For more information, please see page 8.

The Gathering BanquetThis evening is about special events for our organization! Join your friends and fellow artists for dinner. What a great opportunity to sit together, talk, laugh, visit with other friends at adjoining tables, and have a nice dinner, too.

Hall of Flame AwardSince 2002, this prestigious honor has been given to a long-term member of our organization whose contribution deserves special recognition. The Hall of Flame Award sets a standard of excellence in the world of glass beadmaking.

Live AuctionThe evening ends with the Live Auction, filled with excitement and fun. And remember how very important the Live Auction is to the ISGB educational programs. We need your support and the Live Auction is a great way to give. Bid often, bid high, and take home some incredible items.

In the spirit of sharing, please bring your handmade beads you intend to swap and please remember that this time together is only about swapping, “oohing and ahhing,” and not about selling. Express your multifaceted self, let your creativity sparkle, come to swap, and leave with wonderful memories!

Closing PartySunday night is the time to celebrate the end of another great conference. Workshops, presentations, and activities have ended and now it’s time to say goodbye. Before packing, stop by this final get together, exchange stories about everything you enjoyed during the Gathering, listen to some music, and toast a wonderful time spent with friends old and new.
