Welcome WeekTo help you settle in when youarrive, we hold a special WelcomeWeek in September (at thebeginning of the academic year).This includes a greeting at theairport, a special welcome dinner(giving you the chance to meetother international students) andtrips to see local tourist attractions.This week takes place before thestart of the term’s lectures andseminars so you have time torelax and make friends.

Our academic schools host eventsduring Welcome Week to prepareyou for your studies. There are alsocampus tours, themed eveningsand sporting activities.

If you are arriving to start yourprogramme in January, we greetyou at the airport; whichever pointin the year you join us, we offera series of support, inductionand social events to help yousettle in and make friends.

Supportive teachingAt Kent, we’re proud of oursupportive teaching. Ouracademics are friendly andapproachable, and students gethigh levels of contact time withtheir tutors and lecturers. Studentfeedback has helped us to develop

well-designed and intellectuallyrigorous courses.

All of our students have anacademic adviser – someonewho can help if they have anyproblems. There is a StudentLearning Advisory Service that canprovide tuition on everything fromresearch skills to writing essays.We also make sure that you gettraining so you can make the mostof our extensive library and ITresources.

STUDENT LIFE IN CANTERBURY

Canterbury is a beautifulcity, less than an hourfrom London. It hasa warm and friendlyatmosphere and eachyear students fromaround the worldfall in love with itscosmopolitan charm.

As you’d expect from a city withnearly 30,000 students, there’s arich social life. In fact, accordingto a 2013 report from Experian,Canterbury is the UK’s third mostvibrant city. The city has museums,art galleries, clubs, bars,restaurants, sports facilities,two cinemas and a theatre.

Campus lifeOur Canterbury campus is set in300 acres of beautiful parklandoverlooking the Cathedral. Thisgives you the best of both worlds:green spaces on campus, yetonly a 25-minute walk from thecity centre. A frequent bus serviceruns between campus and the city.

Campus life is ideal for studentsfrom overseas as everything is inone place. In your spare time, youcan enjoy the campus cinema andtheatre, or attend concerts at theColyer-Fergusson Building. Thecampus is also home to a rangeof bars and restaurants, shopsand a student nightclub.

Student societiesKent Union, the students’ union,has over 100 student societies.Many are focused on international

culture such as the Afro-Caribbean,Asian, Chinese, German, Hellenicand Japanese societies; othersinclude film-making, parkour freerunning and scuba diving. For moredetails, see www.kentunion.co.uk

Location A huge bonus for our students ishow close Canterbury is to London– the high-speed train servicetakes less than an hour. If you wantto explore Paris or Brussels, youcan catch a Eurostar train and bethere in about two hours. It’s alsoeasy to cross the Channel by ferryand get to international locationsby flying from one of London’sairports. See p92 for more details.

SupportThe campus offers a high levelof support. University staff canhelp with all kinds of queries.Our student union provides anadvice service, with guidanceon immigration and visas, and

has a Jobshop that can help youfind part-time work. The StudentLearning Advisory Serviceprovides support in study skills,and our Centre for English andWorld Languages providesEnglish language tuition. There isan on-site medical centre whereyou can register with a UK doctorwho provides free medical careduring your stay. Kent also employsits own counsellors and nurses.

SportIn 2013, we completed a £4.8million redevelopment of oursports facilities, improving ourfitness suite and dance studios,and building indoor tennis andnetball courts. We also havebadminton, basketball and squashcourts, and all-weather footballpitches. There is a huge rangeof sports societies and teams,so you can develop your sportingskills, whether for leisure or tocompete at an elite level.

STUDENT LIFE IN MEDWAY

Our Medway campushas won several designawards. Occupying grandbuildings that were oncepart of a British navalbase, the campuscombines a historicsetting with high-techfacilities to providea stunning studyenvironment less thanan hour from London.

There’s a recording studio for thosestudying music, a fully equippedradio and TV newsroom for ourtrainee journalists, and dedicatedstudios for our arts students.

LocationOur School of Music and Fine Artis based at The Historic Dockyard,Chatham, next to the River Medway.The Centre for Journalism and theSchool of Sport and ExerciseSciences are just across theroad at the impressive ChathamMaritime site. Our student

accommodation, Liberty Quays,is by the River Medway in anattractive modern development.

The campus has easy access tocentral London: trains from nearbyEbbsfleet International take under20 minutes and trains fromChatham take around 50 minutes.If you want to explore Paris orBrussels, the Eurostar train fromEbbsfleet International can take youthere in about two hours. Airportsare easily reached by road or rail –see p92 for details. The historictowns of Chatham and Rochesterare a bus-ride away.

Social lifeThere is a strong sense ofcommunity on campus andstudents find it easy to makefriends. There’s a lively campusbar that holds regular themenights. The societies and clubson offer include Afro-Caribbean,Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Nigerian,Nepalese, Sikh and Spanish.Annual events include the

Summer Ball, which features oneof the UK’s celebrity DJs. Seewww.gkunions.co.uk for details.

There are cafés and restaurants oncampus. Nearby is a multi-screencinema showing the most popularmovies. The local town of Chathamprovides entertainment such as livemusic and a comedy club.

Sport There are lots of sports societiesand being close to the river meansthat many students take part inrowing, canoeing and sailing. Thenearby multimillion-pound sportscentre, Medway Park (partlyfunded by the University), offersspecial rates to University ofKent students. Facilities includea swimming pool, fitness suiteand an athletics track, as wellas several sports halls. All facilitiesare built to a high standard – thePark was an approved pre-Gamestraining camp for the London 2012Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Also in the Medway area, youcan enjoy an ice rink, dry ski slope,karting circuit, golf course withdriving range and indoor bowls.

AthensKent’s Heritage Management MA,offered in Athens, teaches the skillsrequired for the management ofheritage sites. The degree is acollaboration between Kent andAthens University of Economicsand Business (AUEB). Teachingis in English and there is a rangeof scholarships available.

LocationThe programme is ideally locatedin the Athenian suburb of Eleusina,the birthplace of Aeschylus and,as the location of the Eleusinianmysteries, one of the mostimportant archaeological religioussites in the world. BrusselsKent is the only UK university with acentre in Brussels. The courses arespecialist postgraduate degreesrelated to the study of internationalaffairs and taught in English.

PRE-SESSIONAL PROGRAMMESIN ENGLISH FOR ACADEMICPURPOSESThe University offersa number of courses inEnglish for AcademicPurposes (EAP) forstudents who need toimprove their Englishlanguage skills in order tostudy at university level.

These specially designed coursesfocus on developing your Englishlanguage and study skills sothat you can meet the level ofproficiency required for yourchosen course of study (see table,right). All courses are taught byKent language tutors who areexperts in the field of EAP.

If your education oryour experience so farhas not given you thequalifications, studyskills or the Englishlanguage ability thatyou need to take theundergraduate degreeof your choice, you mayneed to take one of ourfoundation programmes.

When you apply for a foundationprogramme at Kent, you specifythe degree of your choice. Thismeans that you are guaranteed aplace on that course, providing youpass your foundation programmeat a sufficient level.

Taught at our Canterbury campus,these programmes offer teachingof an exceptional quality. Thereare two main types of programmeyou can take: the InternationalFoundation Programme (IFP) ora subject-specific programme.

Kent’s InternationalFoundation Programme(IFP)This year-long programme, oneof the first international foundationprogrammes offered by a Britishuniversity, is designed especiallyfor international students andprovides training in academicsubjects in addition to Englishfor Academic Purposes andacademic skills. Students whosuccessfully complete the IFP andmeet the rules of progression areguaranteed entry to a wide rangeof degrees in the Humanities,

Sciences and Social Sciences.Pathways include Architecture,Biosciences, Business andManagement, Chemistry,Computing, Economics, ElectronicEngineering, Forensic Science,Law, Physics, Pharmacology andPhysiology, Psychology, and Sportand Exercise Science.

The IFP is a modular coursetaught over three terms startingin September or January. Youare eligible for the IFP if:• you are from a country where

secondary education does notreach the level needed for directentry to UK undergraduatedegrees

and/or• you have reached an academic

standard acceptable for first-year entry to a degreeprogramme, but do not havea high enough standard ofEnglish language to copewith the demands of adegree programme.

It is also possible to study theKent IFP in Turkey (Istanbul) andin Hong Kong. The course of studyis the same as that studied bystudents in the UK.

IFP entry requirementsTo gain entry on to the IFP, youneed the following:• a good academic school-

leaving certificate with particularstrengths in subjects that arerelevant to your intended areaof study

• GCSE grade C Maths orequivalent for some degreeprogrammes. If you do not havethis level of qualification, you willneed to take the IFP Maths andStatistics module

• 5.0 IELTS, with no less than 5.0in each subtest, or equivalent.

Kent’s undergraduatedegrees are some of thebest in the UK, designedto challenge you and takeyour studies to thehighest level.

Undergraduate degrees usuallytake three years, and may includea term abroad. For students whotake our Year Abroad or Year inIndustry option, a degree usuallytakes four years.

Professional experienceKent encourages you to gainprofessional experience duringyour studies. Many of our degreesoffer a paid year in industry or ashorter work placement, whichmay be in the UK or overseas.You’re given support in gainingthe necessary language skills andin finding the placement. We havelinks with leading companies suchas Sun Microsystems in the USA.Language students often take workplacements as teaching assistantsin countries such as Spain, Franceor Hong Kong.

Students also gain experiencewithin our own award-winningclinics. These include the SportsInjury Clinic, the Kent Law Clinicand the Kent IT Consultancy.There are many volunteer rolesoffered by Kent Union Volunteering.

Career-focused teachingOur degrees enable you to flourishin a competitive global economy.Graduates develop skills that makethem better prepared to start theircareers and more attractive topotential employers – six monthsafter graduation in 2014, less than6% of Kent graduates were withouta job or further study opportunity.

Teaching styleOur courses are designed tobe stimulating and build up yourconfidence, step by step. Teachingmethods include lectures,seminars, workshops, field trips,conferences, independent studyand one-to-one tutorials. We alsoencourage you to developindependent study skills.

The first insight into a new topicis usually from taught lectures.The next step is to deepen thatknowledge via seminars andworkshops. Seminars are smallstudy groups and the focus ison lively discussion. Workshopsdevelop your skills in a laboratoryor a studio. Both take place underthe guidance of a tutor.

You are assessed by a mixture ofcoursework, seminar performance,practical assignments andexaminations. The marks you getin the first year of a degree do notcount towards your final result.

A Junior Year Abroad(JYA) at Kent allows youto choose from a widerange of modules andto study alongsideundergraduate students.

The programme runs for the fullacademic year from September toJune and is for native speakers ofEnglish or those with an excellentcommand of the English language.

All JYA students take modulesworth 120 credits, split over theautumn and spring terms. Youchoose your modules before youarrive – see p44-69 for the subjectareas that we offer. You can choosemodules from Stages 1, 2 or 3 ofany undergraduate degree. Theacademic credits you earn at Kentcan be transferred to your degreeat home.

PRE-MASTER’S GRADUATEDIPLOMAS (GDIP)

If you do not havethe necessary Englishlanguage proficiencyor academic skills forpostgraduate study, ourrange of Pre-Master’sgraduate diplomas(GDip) prepare you for,and provide access to,Master’s degrees at Kent.

Canterbury campusBy air: The nearest major airportsto the Canterbury campus areLondon Heathrow (LHR) andLondon Gatwick (LGW). If takinga taxi directly to the campus,Heathrow is a 120-minute journey,Gatwick airport is a 90-minutejourney. Both airports also haveexcellent transport links to centralLondon and onwards.

From central London by train:trains from London St Pancras toCanterbury West take less than anhour. Trains from London Victoriato Canterbury East take about anhour and a half. The stations inCanterbury are a five-minute taxiride or bus ride to campus.

By Eurostar: you can take a fasttrain from Paris or Brussels toAshford International in about twohours. The station is a 30-minutetaxi ride from the campus.

By Channel Tunnel or ferry: theChannel Tunnel allows you to travelfrom Calais to Folkestone in 35minutes. Ferries leave from Calaisand arrive at Dover and takeapproximately 90 minutes.

Medway campusBy air: The nearest major airportsto the Medway campus areLondon Heathrow (LHR) andLondon Gatwick (LGW). If takinga taxi directly to the campus,Heathrow is a 90-minute journey,Gatwick airport is a 60-minutejourney. Both airports also haveexcellent transport links to centralLondon and onwards.

From central London by train:London Victoria or London StPancras trains to Chatham takeapproximately 50 minutes. FromChatham station it is a 10-minutetaxi ride to campus. London StPancras to Ebbsfleet Internationaltakes under 20 minutes, plus a30-minute taxi ride to campus.
