ISS Welcomes new Graduate Assistant!

After having been an International Student Am-

bassador for the 17’-18’ academic year I have

had the lucky opportunity of meeting hundreds

of international students, in which many encoun-

ters resulted in friendship. For that, I could not

be more grateful. There really is no quintessen-

tial way to describe the enjoyment, knowledge,

and humility one gains from interacting with oth-

ers from a multitude of diverse cultures. It is

simply amazing. Having also been an interna-

tional student myself once before, I can at least partially relate to the wide array

of unpredictable emotions and experiences one will have living in an entirely

different country. One thing that I do know for certain, is that a kind stranger in

a foreign land can make all the difference and so I strive to be that pillar of com-

fortability. That is why I could not be more excited to expand and enhance my

abilities of doing such as ISS’ new Graduate Assistant.

My passions for traveling, learning from other cultures, organizing and partak-

ing in cultural events, and spreading cultural awareness all meet at the cross-

roads of this new point in my life. I am delighted about the personal enjoyment

that will come, but more importantly I am ecstatic about the enjoyment I can

bring others and the difference I can bring to this world. It is almost as if the

timing of this juncture could not be more perfect. In a time when centuries of

progress are currently being regressed by prejudice and hate, I am blessed to be

in a position of power to stand up for those of distinct origins.

May our new journey begin, together, towards a better tomorrow.

Luke D'Elia

Horseshoe Sandwich

A horseshoe is an open-faced sandwich originated in Springfield, Illi-nois. This sandwich is made with two pieces of toasted bread (often white bread or Texas toast), two pieces of hamburger patty, and a large portion of French fries covered in cheese sauce.

The sandwich was created in the late 1920s by chef Joe Schweska at a Leland Hotel in Springfield, Illinois . Traditionally, the Horseshoe Sandwich is served on a sizzling metal plate, known as the Anvil, two thick-cut slices of bread are toasted and added to the plate. Then a thick slice of ham, shaped like a horseshoe is added, and to it a Welsh rarebit cheese sauce made of white sharp cheddar, and then just before serving, fresh-made French fries are added as the nails in the horseshoe. The se-cret to this sandwich is the delicious cheese sauce. At present, a horse-shoe sandwich offers either a thick fried ham steak or two large ham-burger patties, and the cheese sauce is poured over the fries.
