1. Open a Bank Account - There are many banks in Newcastle city centre that you can open an account with. To open an account, you will need your ID (your passport), a document confirming your overseas address, a document confirming your UK address, and a letter from your Faculty confirming you are enrolled at Northumbria University.
2. Get some insurance to protect your belongings - Although Newcastle is one of the safest cities in the UK, students are often targeted by burglars & thieves here. It is important that you protect yourself in case any of your valuables get stolen or lost. An insurance company called Endsleigh is the insurance provider recommended by The National Union of Students and has expertise in understanding students’ needs. You can find out more at www.endsleigh.co.uk
3. Register with a local doctor - It is important to register with a GP (general practitioner) soon after you get settled in the UK, and not wait until you are in need of health care. You will be given information on different GPs that you can register with at your induction.
4. Buy a TV License - If you would like to watch television whilst you are here, even if it is on your laptop or other device, you must pay for a TV license. It costs £145.50 for a year, and you can find out more through this website: www.tvlicensing.co.uk
5. Find your local supermarket - There are many different supermarkets in Newcastle including Morrisons, Tesco, ASDA, Marks & Spencer, and Sainsbury’s. Some of these supermarkets offer online shopping and delivery which may help you if you don’t live close to one. You may also find their websites helpful in determining which of them is the cheapest.
TOP 10 TIPS 6. Get familiar with your transport links - Newcastle has an underground train service called the metro as well as many different bus services. To find local transport routes that will help you, visit www.nexus.org.uk/home . You may also need a taxi when the bus & metro routes aren’t suitable - you can call BUDGET taxis on 0191 298 5050.
7. Learn the culture - Whilst in the UK you will experience a different way of life. Useful tips about British culture include: a hand shake is usually the accepted greeting when meeting new people; punctuality is valued so if you are due somewhere at a certain time, be there at that time or just before; most British people will queue when waiting for any kind of service; it is customary to leave a 10% tip at restaurants (not fast-food restaurants); and manners, saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, are also highly valued.
8. Buy an NUS card - These cards will get you student discount in shops all over the UK. You can receive big discounts on a wide range of services and shops, so it can really help you save money! Your Students’ Union sells these cards and you can get one by visiting our Welcome Desk on the ground floor.
9. GET INVOLVED - Your Students’ Union offers many different services you can use and activities that you can take part in. It is a great place to meet new friends and share new experiences. Have a look on our website for more information on all we have to offer - www.mynsu.co.uk
10. Advice and Support - If you need anything throughout your stay here, the University and Students’ Union offer many different services that can help you. The University’s Accommodation Office can help if you have any problems with your accommodation; if you are accused of academic misconduct, your Students’ Union can offer you independent advice; and the University’s Student Support & Wellbeing Service can help you with your visa and has a counselling service you can access.
