ABOUT THE MITSUABOUT THE MITSUABOUT THE MITSUABOUT THE MITSU----JI (3JI (3JI (3JI (3----TEMPLETEMPLETEMPLETEMPLE) KATA OF WADO) KATA OF WADO) KATA OF WADO) KATA OF WADO----RYURYURYURYU 参慈参慈参慈参慈 Ji'tte, Ji'han and Ji'in form a group of three kata beginning with the same characteristic kamae, which obviously has roots in ancient Chinese boxing. The 'lost' Kata of Wadoryu, Ji'in, likely originates from the Tomari-te School. Sensei Funakoshi did not teach this kata exten-sively. However, from a Wado perspective, it remains important to us due to its many Wado Tai-Sabaki techniques. It has, however, been removed from the Japan Karate Association and Japan Karate Federation teaching & grading syllabus, which is why it has lost popularity in 'Shiai' (competition). However, due to the wealth of important Tai-sabaki elements contained within, British Wadokai has retained it for its important fundamental value for the traditional Wado Budo-ka.

JI'TTEJI'TTEJI'TTEJI'TTE 慈手慈手慈手慈手 'Temple hand/s'. A Tomari-te Kata named after a Buddhist Temple and developed by the Shorei-ryu Karate master Itosu-Yasutsune. This Kata is practised within numerous Karate schools of Okinawa. Also known, although mistakenly, as Jutte; ten hands.

JI'HANJI'HANJI'HANJI'HAN 慈音慈音慈音慈音 'Temple sound'. A Kata named after the Buddhist temple Ji'han-ji and developed by the Karate master Itosu-Yasutsune. Prac-tised within the Wado school of Karate. See Kata, within the British Wadokai Wado Comprehensive. See also Jion.

JION JION JION JION An Okinawan Shorei-ryu Kata meaning ‘Mercy’. Known as Ji'han in the Wado schools of Karate. Changed to Jion by the Shotokan School of Karate, with recent conforming 'competition styles’ of Wadoryu following suit. See Ji’han.

JI'INJI'INJI'INJI'IN 慈陰慈陰慈陰慈陰 'Temple ground'. Referred to as one of the 'Lost Kata of Wadoryu'. A Kata of the Shuri-te school of Karate developed by Itosu-Yasutsune.

Gunnislake Wado Karate will no longer host the Cornish Gradings, due to the interruptions that often oc-cur during the training sessions. All Plymouth Schools membership will now be focusing on ONE date per-quarter, allowing a more straightforward process of progression. Students who are unable to make these gradings will be simply moved to the next available grading date. Kyu Gradings throughout the year are adver-tised well in advance, so there should be no excuse for being unable to attend. For full details of all gradings and courses, please refer to your British Wadokai Date Section, which even shows notice of events up to 2026. NO-ONE can complain of ‘too short no-tice’ for ANY British Wadokai Event; especially as many are advertised from at least a full year’s notice.

SSSSUUUU----HAHAHAHA----RI RI RI RI ---- 守破離守破離守破離守破離 Article: Article: Article: Article: Su Ha Ri ...Su Ha Ri ...Su Ha Ri ...Su Ha Ri ...and this will bring us back to ‘Do’, ‘Rei’ and ‘Mi’!and this will bring us back to ‘Do’, ‘Rei’ and ‘Mi’!and this will bring us back to ‘Do’, ‘Rei’ and ‘Mi’!and this will bring us back to ‘Do’, ‘Rei’ and ‘Mi’! “Su Ha Ri”. Master Ohtsuka tells us that the term has been around for a long time, and also exists in many other forms within Japanese culture, including the Japanese Tea Ceremony, etc. The ‘general’ understanding of the principles are as follows, but are ‘adapted’ depending on the relevance, and reflective to the particular ‘art’ or activity it corresponds to. Su/Shu = To keep to the practices, methods and original teachings of the previous generation (master to student). Ha = Is to doubt, to deviate from those teachings (based upon personal elevated knowledge through many years of dedicated training). Ri = To create new ideas and move towards further personal development. In many modern Wado organisations these ‘developments’ have come in the guise of ‘competition-based’ restrictive/restrained fighting practises and away from unre-stricted and unrealistic ‘combat’ scenarios. Sport Karate Competition should not be the motivation for the development of Ri. Ohtsuka Sensei adds the postscript that these levels of attainment depend on the natural ability of the individual student/

practitioner, as well as the circumstances and environment necessary for the student to flourish - something not easy to ac-complish. We must never forget the ‘original practises’ of the skill. However, it must be remembered that these should be personal developments NOT teaching developments. For example - we would not teach our own short-cuts/habits to our students as our students have not attained the same knowledge or their their their their own own own own personal mechanical development or evolution. For a student to flourish he must develop within his own style of me-chanics with his own expression and personality through personal awareness - 'He must become himself'. (MI-CHI). When we teach someone to drive a car, for the first time, we teach the basics/fundamentals of driving that has been ‘tried & tested’ for a safe and educational development. When we pull away from a junction we are taught to use ‘mirror, signal, ma-noeuvre’ as a precursor to joining the traffic. If we were to teach our own ‘shortcuts’ and (in some cases) bad/modified habits, which we ourselves have attained through many years of driving, the student may very well miss out on the awareness of some very valuable lost information.” When we teach students Wado Karate we teach from scratch in the same way as our teachers showed us when we started on the path and through our development. After time our students will reach a point where they too will develop their own technique and movement through their own ability and progression. Although, as individuals, we may reach ‘Ha’ and ‘Ri’, we must still remain within ‘Su’ for our teachings. British Wadokai has always taught the TRADITIONAL and ORIGINAL Wadoryu that was introduced into the UK from the JKF-Wadokai (Ohtsuka Meijin’s original organisation). Extra elements were introduced, by Suzuki Hanshi, such as the ‘revamped’ Sanbon-gumite (Sanbon-gumite was dropped by the JKF-Wadokai Japan (as not being relevant within modern competition) although some JKF-Wadokai Dojo still teach versions of it - Even Ohtsuka Hironori Saiko-Shihan, of the Wadoryu Karate-do Renmei, still teaches variations of Sanbon-gumite), Ohyo-gumite (which was introduced to help in the development of Wadoryu sparring, again this was dropped in many ‘modern’ Wadoryu schools due to competition relevance, as takedowns, knee and elbow strikes are no longer allowed in ‘sport-karate’) and Renraku-waza (a transition from Ido-Kihon & Kata to a more natural fluid/flowing ‘free-fighting’ movement). However, everything for us has remained intact from this time - NOTH-ING HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY or REPLACED. The Wado created in Japan by Ohtsuka Meijin and introduced into the UK in 1963, and then permanently in 1964, by Suzuki Hanshi has remained the same by British Wadokai. WaWaWaWa----Do and WaDo and WaDo and WaDo and Wa----Don’tDon’tDon’tDon’t British Wadokai instructors DO NOT teach their own ‘personalised interpretation’ of Wadoryu karate (although they may teach techniques that they may have personally developed for education purposes) but, as far as the syllabus is concerned, they impart the original that has been handed down to them from their previous instructors. When a student trains within the syl-labus in one British Wadokai Dojo at one end of the country it should resemble that of another school elsewhere at the other end of the country (again, the importance of the Standardisation Courses). We do not have ‘Fred-ryu’ versions of Wado in any British Wadokai dojo. If a student wants to create his own ‘style’ fromfromfromfrom Wadoryu, then that is his choice, he would then obviously have to leave British Wadokai to do this. British Wadokai is Wado Ryu NOT Wado-’based’. When a student creates and modifies his technique he is only modifying HIS OWN technique to suit his own natural me-chanical ability/development. He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ for everyone else and teach this to his own He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ for everyone else and teach this to his own He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ for everyone else and teach this to his own He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ for everyone else and teach this to his own students; students; students; students; that is a decision for his own students to make after they have attained many years of their own ’correct’ training; that is a decision for his own students to make after they have attained many years of their own ’correct’ training; that is a decision for his own students to make after they have attained many years of their own ’correct’ training; that is a decision for his own students to make after they have attained many years of their own ’correct’ training; and upon reaching Ha and Ri themselvesand upon reaching Ha and Ri themselvesand upon reaching Ha and Ri themselvesand upon reaching Ha and Ri themselves. . . . “There is nothing wrong with adding to a repertoire of technique, but we do not change or replace our true fundamental his-toric Wado Karate syllabus techniques within British Wadokai.” In 1982 British Wadokai introduced extra-curricular elements to enhance the student’s ability and performance, such as the Tanto-dori (knife-defences), later the I-dori (kneeling defences) and then the Muto-dori (sword defences). These are additions to British Wadokai not replacements. Our syllabus has remained and WILL REMAIN the same as it's done since 1963. Traditionally, we are taught that Su-Ha-Ri is reflected in the progression of 1st Dan, 2nd Dan and 3rd Dan development, as there should be no tests for 4th Dan and above; due to the principles previously explained of Su-Ha-Ri. Only when someone has ‘reached’ those levels will the grade be achieved as part of the transition. 4th Dan and above are traditionally ‘awarded’ grades for loyalty, plus the contributed years in dedicated service, etc. So, until you have ‘passed’ all your Wado tests, it’s still MIRROR, SIGNAL, MANOEUVRE!MIRROR, SIGNAL, MANOEUVRE!MIRROR, SIGNAL, MANOEUVRE!MIRROR, SIGNAL, MANOEUVRE! SU-HA-RI - The old Japanese martial-arts word that explains the student's learning and progression. · Su - Indicates that a beginner must correctly copy all karate techniques from his instructor. · Ha - Means that after a number of years of training, when the Karate-ka has attained a sufficient level black belt, he is al-lowed to develop new techniques, provided they are improvements, to his 'own' Wado. This applies to all movements, how-ever, a student’s own development must not violate, or effect, the fundamental development of other students; as they must discover and travel the path of Suhari for themselves. · Ri - Is the highest form. It means that after an even longer period of training than for HA, the Karateka must be able to per-form all forms of karate automatically, not stopping to think about his movement/s. Gary E Swift Kyoshi (original article 2001).
