Fundamental clash between national cataloguing rules & MARC 21 format use at the conceptual level:

What is the object of description (e.g. content vs. carrier)Main/Added entry (e.g. syndetic/linking structure: literary vs. bibliographic unit)Multilevel description method (e.g. record linking: multivolume publications)


Some conclusions…Conversion UNIMARC – MARC 21:

Loss of coded data (e.g. rare books) & information value of bibliographic data elements

New types of resources: well accommodatedMaintenance of the format: additions?Croatian cataloguing rules: national tradition?Users: Is there an impact, if at all?
