Use of MARC 21 BibliographicBibliographic conditions:

New types of materials (e.g. web resources) follow MARC 21Content vs. Carrier (Literary vs. Bibliographic unit) (e.g. e-resources, reproductions) change the practiceMain/Added entry (heading) different concept: follow MARC 21

Some conclusions…General observation:

Fundamental clash between national cataloguing rules & MARC 21 format use at the conceptual level:

What is the object of description (e.g. content vs. carrier)Main/Added entry (e.g. syndetic/linking structure: literary vs. bibliographic unit)Multilevel description method (e.g. record linking: multivolume publications)

Page 14: International Workshop MARC 21 - Experiences, Challenges and

M. Willer: Croatian Experience with MARC 21

Some conclusions…Conversion UNIMARC – MARC 21:

Loss of coded data (e.g. rare books) & information value of bibliographic data elements

New types of resources: well accommodatedMaintenance of the format: additions?Croatian cataloguing rules: national tradition?Users: Is there an impact, if at all?
