SMEs in APEC

SMEs make up over 97% of enterprises and account for
50% to 80% of jobs in the Asia Pacific region.
SMEs’ contribution to GDP varies from 20% to 50% across majority of APEC economies. However, only up to 35% or less of SMEs are direct exporters.

Percentage of Women-owned SMEs in APEC in 2011
As of 2011, an average of 37% of these SMEs are owned by women in APEC.
Table 1 shows that the size of women-owned SMEs tends to be smaller relative to male-owned ones, due to certain constraints faced by women.

APEC Boracay Action Agenda to Globalize MSMEs
Adopted by the APEC Economic Leaders in 2015
Aims to “strengthen focus on MSMEs led by women” through the following:
• APEC will foster the use of gender-disaggregated data in measuring the economic and social impacts on MSMEs;
• APEC will promote an understanding of the divergent constraints faced by male and female-led MSMEs; and
• APEC will encourage exchange of best practices on women-friendly interfaces with customs and other border authorities.

Why GREAT Women Brand and GREAT Women Platform?
Branding is always key to promoting products and enterprises.
The GREAT Women Brand is an alternative brand where women MSEs or SMEs can converge and it has a set of criteria for selecting the product/enterprise to be included or named as a product in the brand.
The GREAT Women Platform is a mechanism of the ECHOSi Foundation to draw in women micro and small entrepreneurs for assistance in product development, branding, etc
