Internet Research - Assignment #2

Think first – then search. Imagine walking in the library to research a topic for a school report and you start reading the first book you see on the topic. Without considering the age of the book, the credibility of the author, the validity of the content or the other resources available, you decide to use this book for your entire report.

Unfortunately, this is similar to how many students use the Internet for researching information. They select the first web site that appears without evaluating its content or origin.

The Internet is a huge collection of information. Some of the web sites can be very useful; however, many can be questionable. Effective Internet research is important to save time and to obtain quality information.

Think first – then search. The following steps can help improve your research results:

1) Think about your topic or information desired before you start hitting the keyboard. Write down key words, phrases, etc.

2) Decide which search tool (search engine, meta-search, web directory, etc.) will be best in obtaining the information you need.

3) Go to the site and preview its content. (NOTE: This does not mean to read every word on the web site.)

4) Evaluate the site for its reliability, accuracy and relevancy. 5) If you decide to use the web site, make sure you obtain the

information needed to properly cite your resource.

Netiquette - Assignment #5

The Internet provides a variety of tools that have improved the ability and speed to communicate with others. Although many young adults prefer instant and text messaging, emailing is still useful in school and work environments. With the ease of sending longer messages and forwarding attachments from one to many, emailing remains an effective communication tool.

There is a big difference, however, between sending a casual email to your friend and writing a professional email to an adult such as your teacher, future college professor or boss.

This assignment will give you an opportunity to review preparing an email and to polishing your “netiquette”.

The number one rule of emailing is to remember who is going to receive your email. You may use emoticons to express your feelings when emailing a friend but these should be avoided when emailing your teacher. :-) In addition, the use of acronyms and texting lingo is inappropriate in a formal email.

Instructions: Review the PowerPoint, Sending an Email. Copy the email template below into a Word document. For this assignment, you will be drafting an email to your teacher

with a cc to J. Smith and a bcc to S. Jones. (NOTE: You will not be sending an actual email but will be saving this as an assignment in your files.)

For the recipient field, locate your teacher’s email address on your school web site (example: www.egusd.net/franklinhs) or use the email address your teacher has provided.

11

Page 12: Internet Research for Computer Technology Tec…  · Web viewYou are interested in finding a job and would like to locate ... //. ... This assignment will give you an opportunity

For the cc and bcc fields, J. Smith’s email is [email protected] and S. Jones’s email is [email protected].

In the body of the email, explain to your teacher why wikis (including Wikipedia), blogs and personal web sites are unreliable resources to use when conducting internet searches for class projects or school research.

Locate at least two (2) websites on this issue and include those web addresses in your email as references.

Your email should have at least one paragraph with 5 sentences or more in the paragraph. (Remember: You are writing this email to an adult. Use complete sentences and do not include any texting lingo!)

Write a subject line that reflects the purpose of your email. Save the draft of your email as Internet Assignment #5.

Remember Your Netiquette!

#1~ Treat others as you want to be treated#2~ Take 10 then send#3~ Cyberspace is Face-to-Face#4~ Be Smart- Look Smart#5~ Separate Facts and Opinions

Internet Safety - Assignment #6

Although text messaging appears to be the primary communication tool for young adults, most teens have spent time blogging, instant messaging, e-mailing, joining chat rooms, gaming and/or interacting on social networking sites. While allowing a sense of communication freedom, these internet activities can lead to unwanted outcomes for the user.

For example, the number of cyber bullying cases continues to increase annually. According to statistics from the i-SAFE foundation:

Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying.

More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyber threats online.

Over 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet.

Well over half of young people do not tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs.

Just as drivers must learn the rules of the road before obtaining a driver’s license, internet users should be aware of guidelines for navigating safely in the cyber world.

Instructions:For your final assignment in the Internet standard, you have been asked by a middle school teacher to design a 3 fold brochure on internet safety (cyber safety) to be distributed to 7th and 8th graders. The following are some topics you may want to include in your brochure:

- Safe searching tips (smart surfing)- Cyberbulling- Identity threat (phising, spyware, etc.)

14

Page 15: Internet Research for Computer Technology Tec…  · Web viewYou are interested in finding a job and would like to locate ... //. ... This assignment will give you an opportunity

(Note: See CT 5 - Assignment 4 if you need assistance on the layout for a 3 fold brochure.)

All the information in this brochure must be accurate and based on research findings. Do not “make up” statistics, etc. Before starting this assignment, review some web sites on internet safety. You need to research at least 3 web sites and list them on the back of your brochure. Possible sites to visit are:

www.egusd.net/students_parents/isafety.cfmwww.safeteens.com www.wiredkids.org/wiredkids_org.html

Include the following in your brochure: Title panel Current statistics or information that illustrates the need for internet

safety. Steps or tips for making internet use safer for young adults.

(Remember that this brochure is intended for 7th and 8th graders.) On the back panel, include your name, date and the web sites you

used as resources.

Brochure Requirements:Your brochure must include the following components:

Two landscape pages. Do not use a template. 3 EVEN panels (both pages) All margins .25 3 columns and 1 row Text covers 80% of the brochure Body text = size 12pt. font (titles and headings may be larger) Images cover no more than 20% of the brochure (From clipart

or the Internet) Images are not larger than 2 x 2 inches. No more than two different types of text fonts. Equal margins around each panel. Equal panels when folded. Opens correctly (like a book, left to right) No more than two WordArt objects Appropriate use of color Web sites used listed on the back panel (3 minimum) Your name and date located on the bottom back panel
