Agreement and Release Forms Please read carefully and send a signed copy together with your application to CCWS. You can send your application and agreement forms by mail, fax or email. Internships are strictly volunteer positions. you will not be paid any monies, but you will receive room and board. 1. General expectations We want your stay as an intern at Critter Care Wildlife Society to be helpful to both yourself and to us we hope this list will give you realistic expectations for your stay. 1) The animals come first. No exceptions. Their care and well-being must be your top priority during your stay at Critter Care. 2) We guarantee that your time with us will be one of both tremendous rewards and difficult times. Particularly during baby season, you can be sure that it will be physically, emotionally and in every way exhausting! However, there is no better feeling than seeing your babies grow up strong and healthy or being witness to the release of an animal that you have spent weeks helping to regain its strength. Keep this in mind during the difficult times! 3) As an intern, you do not have official hours of work. Although ideally you will end work when the centre closes for the day, you are expected to continue working until the work is done. During baby season, this may often mean working past 10 or 11pm in the evening. This can amount to very long days and many hours of work! During baby season, you may be doing feeds throughout the night. You may also be finishing your last feed after 12am and getting up at 6 or 7am for your first feed. Be prepared! 4) In return for your work with us, you will be provided with room and board. We supply interns with the basics for their food. This includes things such as bread, pastas, rice, milk, cheese, cereal, etc. If you have any special desires (such as meat or sweets) you must buy these yourselves. You will not be receiving any monies for your work, but you are gaining invaluable experience that will almost certainly help you to find work in related animal fields in the future. We will also provide you with a reference letter after the completion of your internship. 5) You are expected to be out of bed, and ready for the morning meeting with interns and supervisors at 8:45 am. This means you must be finished showering, and have had breakfast (with your dishes washed, dried and put away) by this time. 6) Computers and phones are not to be used during business hours. 7) Although the supervisors will try their best to help the interns with their work, keep in mind that they have their own work to do. Also, unlike the interns, they are expected to finish work at the end of their 8-hour shift (unless there are special circumstances). 8) Days off: You will be given 2 days off per week; however, it is unlikely that they will be 2 days in a row. If you need specific days off, we will do our best to accommodate you, but this is not guaranteed, and you must request it far enough in advance. During baby season, you are responsible for your babies 7 days a week. This means you must be there to do all your feeds on time – keep in mind that this can sometimes amount to 8 hours of work on your days off.

Page 8: INTERNSHIP APPLICATION FORM 2020/2021 UNSUCCESSFUL ...€¦ · work in related animal fields in the future. We will also provide you with a reference letter after the completion of

9) Although you are welcome to leave the property during your time off, we ask that you fill out the sign-out book every time you do so. This is not to keep tabs on you, but simply because we are responsible for you. Please keep in mind that Critter Care is in an isolated area with no nearby public transportation. Downtown Langley is a 20-minute drive away. Although you may be able to catch a ride with someone, this is not guaranteed. Also, during baby season you must be back in time to do any baby feeds that you have. 10) We do not have a veterinarian onsite. The supervisors are trained to handle basic care and medical procedures, but any extreme cases are brought to our veterinary partners offsite. Although the supervisors will make every effort to bring those interns who are interested to the vet with them, it will depend on the amount of work needing to be done at the centre, and this is not guaranteed. As an intern you will probably also be trained to perform basic procedures such as injections and admittance exams. 11) There are certain difficult realities to wildlife rehabilitation that everyone must be prepared to deal with. These include deaths and euthanizing animals. Sometimes despite your best efforts an animal will not make it, and this can be difficult to deal with. Although it can be little comfort, remember that at least it was somewhere where it was warm and safe for its final moments. Although you will not be performing euthanasia, you must be prepared for the possibility that it will occur during your stay. Sometimes it is more humane to end an animal's suffering rather than let it continue. This may also include euthanasia of very young eyes closed babies – unfortunately we have limits on our time (and money) and it is more humane to euthanize these young animals that are somewhat unaware of their surroundings than to euthanize older babies who know what is going on later in the season. 12) Although we encourage people to nurture the animals in our care, there is a fine line between nurturing and playing with. Mammals are easily imprinted and an animal that has no fear of people will not survive in the wild. Our animals will be released eventually and, particularly when release time is approaching, it is important to remember that you must interact with them as little as possible. They must learn to depend on each other and not their human caregivers. We do not allow people to play with the animals. If this is your interest, you will not do well at Critter Care. 13) It is not guaranteed that you will get to work with (or visit/observe) every animal in our care. Although some species are open for everyone to work with (raccoons, skunks, squirrels, etc.) other species are particularly susceptible to imprinting and, in order to give them the best chance for a successful release, these will remain off-limits to the majority of people at Critter Care. These include the bears, beavers, otters, coyotes and deer. As an intern you may be assigned to one of these species during your stay. Otherwise, you may only get to see these animals as they are admitted. We realize that this can be frustrating. However, we hope that you can remember that you are here for the animals and must give priority to whatever is in their best interest. 14) There is a lot of work that goes into the running of a wildlife rehabilitation centre, and not all of it will be glamorous, or even directly working with the animals. A large part of your work will be cleaning – cleaning animal pens, cages, incubators, and toys, but also cleaning and maintaining the centre itself and its property. Everything has a home and is to be put away properly – if it does not belong where it is please put it where it should be. Dishes (both animal and human) are to be done right after they’re used, dried and put away. Please keep the counters clean and uncluttered. Critter Care is known for its very high standards of cleanliness and animal care, and as an intern you are expected to help us maintain these standards. There are no exceptions, and no one will compromise our standard of cleanliness and care. This is essential in order to prevent the spread of diseases throughout the centre. You may also be asked to participate in other maintenance or construction tasks.

15) If you are living onsite, please remember that you are living in a place of business. This means that you should not leave any of your personal belongings laying around the centre – keep them in your personal area in the intern cabin. Also, you are expected to keep your personal areas neat and tidy – beds should be made every morning and items should not be left lying around. Please have respect for your fellow interns – no one wants to live in someone else’s mess. 16) When living and working in close quarters not only can problems arise but also close friendships. While we encourage everyone to get along and make friends, we do discourage relationships. we are a place of business and no excessive personal displays of affection will be tolerated. Sex, sexual activities, kissing, cuddling, or behaving in an inappropriate or prerogative way will not be tolerated. While you may also become close or friends with staff remember they are your supervisors. No inappropriate relationships between interns and staff will be tolerated. failure to follow these rules will result in intern(s) being sent home and the possible termination of staff member. The living quarters are unisex, and you may be living with people of different genders. 17) Although there is no official uniform for working at Critter Care, please dress appropriately for working with animals. Long pants and t-shirts should be worn to protect yourself from scratches and bites. Always wear proper footwear; no sandals or flipflops during work or when with animals. Please don’t wear your PJ’s while you’re on duty or feeding your babies. 18) During baby season you may be living in close quarters with up to 12 people. We realize that this can be trying at times, particularly when people are stressed and getting little sleep. Most people who come to intern at Critter Care are easy to get along with, however occasionally disputes may arise. Please try to settle problems amongst yourselves. We will, however step in when necessary. 19) There is to be absolutely no intoxication or/ and consumption of alcohol or recreational drugs on the Critter Care property. No exceptions. You are living at place of business and anyone caught with these substances or under their influences will be sent home immediately. Smoking tobacco/ cigarettes is only allowed off site as Critter Care across the road. 20) At Critter Care, we rely on a well system for our water supply. This means that you must be aware of your water consumption – particularly during the drier summer months. We have had severe drought conditions in the past. We ask that you limit the amount of time you spend in the shower to 3 minutes maximum. 21) If you do not understand something or you are unsure, please ask one of the supervisors. A large part of rehabilitation is common sense – use your logic and think about the possible outcomes of your actions on the animals (will this help or hinder?). 22) Teamwork is very important at Critter Care. Although we schedule a lot of the tasks, if someone has been unable to finish one of their tasks for the day, please help each other so that everyone can finish together. Please don’t sit around waiting to be told what to do all the time – if you have been shown how to do a task, take the initiative and do it if it needs to be done. If you haven’t been shown how to do something, please ask. 23) There is an enormous amount of work that goes into running a rehabilitation centre smoothly, and we rely on our interns to help with that. Your goal is to fully support the supervisors in caring for the animals. If you are asked to do something, please do it – we try to be fair and share the bad jobs amongst everyone. If you notice that an animal looks unwell, or some supplies are almost empty, please tell a supervisor

Page 10: INTERNSHIP APPLICATION FORM 2020/2021 UNSUCCESSFUL ...€¦ · work in related animal fields in the future. We will also provide you with a reference letter after the completion of

immediately – the supervisors cannot be everywhere at once and we rely on you to help be our eyes and ears. If you have been with us for a while, please help the supervisors train the new interns. 24) If you see something broken or breaking (sewers, gates, den boxes, walls, tools, etc.) please let the caretakers know immediately. 25) Interns can take photos and videos of animals in their care, however all photos and videos taken are the property of Critter Care Wildlife Society. Photos and videos are not allowed to be published without permission from Critter Care Wildlife Society. Before their departure, interns are required to give copies of all photos and videos taken during their stay, to Critter Care. These rules do not change when interns leave. 26) Potential intern wishing to do longer than 4 months will be asked to have 1/2 weeks off during their internship. This allows interns to relax and de-stress from the busy life of an intern. For example, an intern wanted to complete an 8-month internship, they are required to take 2 weeks off around the middle of their internship. This would be discussed with supervisors prior. 27) Interns are expected to pay a Deposit and Admin fee of a total of $225 within a week of acceptance of internship. 28) For the internship programme we have an age limit of 35. 29) Application will be responded to within 2 weeks of submissions. Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted 30) Gail Martin’s (the Executive Director) word is the last word. Ultimately the quality of your stay at Critter Care will be determined by your attitude. If you are willing to put everything you have into your work and the animals at the centre, you will gain the experience of a lifetime in return. There is nothing like the feeling of a baby raccoon looking trustingly into your eyes or seeing a once-emaciated coyote run healthily into the forest. We are truly grateful to our interns for their help, we simply could not do it without you – thank you! 2. Intern rules of the centre

5. Intern and Volunteer Waiver and Release Form

I am 18 years of age or older and am aware of the many risks of volunteering or interning at Critter Care Wildlife Society in Langley, B.C. Critter Care cares for wildlife that can bite, kick, gash, or scratch or possibly injure me in some other way. These species include deer, raccoons, opossums, weasels, bears etc. I understand that any warm-blooded mammal “can” carry rabies, although there has never been a case of rabies in these animals in B.C. any case that looks suspect will be handled by a Supervisor. However, if you are worried, you can get your own pre-exposure vaccination before you arrive. If you are serious about volunteering with Critter Care you must have this signed, witnessed and sent in or bring it with you when you come. If it is not signed you will not be scheduled. If you have any questions, please call Gail Martin at 1-604-530-2054. Remember to sign in the presence of a disinterested party as a witness. Gail Martin, Founder, Executive Director of Critter Care Wildlife Society I have read this waiver and Release Liability and Assumption of Risk Agreement. I intend my signature to-be a complete and unconditional release of all liability to the greatest extent allowed by law. I further agree to indemnify, save and hold harmless Critter Care, it’s officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, injuries or losses in the course of volunteering or interning at Critter Care and Critter Care related operations. I have had the opportunity to personally discuss the activities and potential dangers incidental to volunteering or interning at Critter Care and Critter Care related operations.

7. Social Media Rules

We understand Social media is a part of everyday modern life and everybody is excited to share their

adventures with family and friends but when posting to any social media platform (Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram, blogs etc.) there are certain rules that must be followed. How a company is represented on

social media can have direct consequences on that company especially a non-profit like Critter Care Wildlife

Society. We rely on public funding to operate.

Critter Care wildlife society reserves the right to use all pictures taken by the intern.

All social media posts must be approved by the executive director or supervisors prior to being posted (Gail

martin)

The following are rules which must be followed:

Center Rules

• No person may be named or identified without prior approval

• If you have any concerns or issues with other interns or staff this must be brought to a supervisor’s

attention not posted about. If we do not know about the problem, we cannot resolve it.

• If you have any questions on concerns about workloads or why you are being asked to something

this must be brought to a supervisor’s attention. If we do not know about the problem, we cannot

resolve it.

• If you are directly told not to share or post about certain subjects or animals do not post about them.

Photography

• As stated in #25 of your “agreement and release” form that you have signed: interns are allowed to

take photos and videos of animals in their care, however all photos and videos taken are the

8. Rescues and Releases

• No release locations or information that may result in the identification of release locations may be

shared. This is for the safety of the animals released.

• No information regarding the feeding of post release animals may be shared. As a rehab center we

are licensed to feed post release animals but are not allowed to discuss or mention it in public. It is

illegal for the public to feed wildlife.

If you have any questions or concerns about these rules, please ask a supervisor. In the past we have had

to take the unfortunate decision to ban interns from sharing pictures and stories. The public do not always

understand and agree with what we do. Anything that goes on the internet is out there for the world to see

and people do not always interpret it the way is intended.

I have read all the Agreement and Release Forms and agree to the rules and limitations stated. I have not withheld or miscommunicated any information provided and will adhere to the rules and standard set before me. Suggested Items to Bring/ Notes/ Traveling to CCWS:

Coming to CCWS international, the airport you need to come Vancouver international YVR. To be a “intern” (Volunteer) you would only require an ETA to come for 6 months or less and a working holiday visa (international experience Canada) for 6 months +. We can provide you a customs letter upon request.

Although you should consider the type of weather usual in Vancouver during the period of your stay, you should also be aware when packing your clothing that our weather can change rapidly, and while one summer is hot and dry, others have been cool and wet, so be prepared for all possibilities. Keep in mind that your clothes will go through a lot while you’re here; between the animals, the painting and the bleach you are sure to ruin at least so me of them so bring your oldest, most worn out items for working and maybe one or two outfits for if you get a chance to go into town. During work hours or feeds no tanks tops or shorts may be worn.

A good pair of sturdy work boots and lots of pairs of good socks. It helps having boots easy to get on and off as you cannot wear your normal shoes into cages. We provide boots to enter cages, but you will still be walking in mud and puddles. CCWS provides enough rubber boots for all the interns but if you are concerned about sharing or sizing you may wish to bring your own. Thrift shops in town normally have a heap if you cannot fit them in your luggage.

No open toed shoes are to be worn in the house during work hours so a pair of trainers or extra boots to wear during down time is required. You may want flipflops/slippers for trips to the bathroom at night or cooking dinner etc.

Raincoat. We are donated these often but cannot guarantee size/numbers. Waterproof trousers are another item we have a few of but interns have found having their own great for cage cleaning or wet workdays.

Toiletries. You will need your own shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc. It will be handy to bring a bag/tote to carry things in as our bathroom is not large enough to store personal products. You will bring them with you to the bathroom when you shower, brush your teeth and so on.

A headlamp or small flashlight. You may be feeding in the dark or walking to the house at night to use the bathroom. Something with an alarm on it (phone will do).

A Canadian power adaptor. You may also like an extension cord if you end up having a top bunk. If you are not a Canadian citizen, please bring $60 - $100 cash with you in case you require medical attention at a clinic.

Up to date tetanus shots are required, and Canadian citizens do not have to pay for them.

CCWS provides basic medicines such as headache, diarrhea, cold and flu, and allergy medications etc. If you have any specific requirements such as muscle relaxants, migraine or other medications you should bring these with you.

Extra strength moisturizer or hand cream– you will be cleaning with bleach a lot, and although we provide rubber gloves, many interns find their hands get extremely dry and cracked.

CCWS provides interns with most food requirements such as bread, cereal, fruits and vegetables, milk (including dairy free), pasta and cheese. If you want to purchase supplemental food items such as snacks, pop etc., you are welcome to do so. Interns also purchase dinner together on occasion. We recommend bringing some money for these treats; however, you could live solely off the food provided.

Among our donated produce we receive commonly gluten free and vegan foods. If you have specialized dietary requirements you will have to purchase these food items yourselves.

We have a lot of board games, DVDs, a TV, Wii, puzzles and books available in our common area. There is also access to WIFI. While you may have limited downtime, you will find fun things to do on your own or in groups.

Please note, while you are welcome to use your laptop or other devices on your off time, please respect your roommates and refrain from skyping or talking on the phone late at night in cabins. You can use the computers/printer in admin if required but only after work hours. We are not responsible for the safety of any personal items. Please keep them safe.

CCWS provides towels and bedding so you will not need to bring these with you.

A swimsuit. In the summer we sometimes set up a pool. Interns with cars also enjoy going to the beach or swimming pool. Note these are not within walking distance- a car would be required.

We are not within walking distance of anything except the national park. Our neighbours across the road sometimes have a food van in summer but otherwise there is nothing close by. You may get a chance for a lift to the shops, but you may also consider having money for a taxi if you wish to leave site. It is roughly a 20min drive to town.

Headphones. You may have one headphone in while you work but never two for safety reasons. And none while you feed. This means no over the ear’s headphones. Many interns find Bluetooth headphones ideal as there are no cords to get caught on anything while you work.

At Critter care we Currently have a common room for the interns to socialize, a BBQ recreational area, trampoline, board games, PlayStation, swimming pool (summer) and pet goats. Critter care is not located near public transport, so either a personal car, uber/ taxi services would be used if you need to go to town.

A day in the life of an intern

6am: During baby season this will often be your first feed. You may have multiple species to feed all before morning meeting. Depending on the species you have and their ages, you may be feeding up to 15 times a day! 8.45 morning meeting – Everyone should be done breakfast and have fed and changed the potties of any animals in their care. This is where the interns are read the “To Do List” which will describe what tasks are to be done that workday. It is also a good opportunity for interns and supervisors to discuss any important matters or any events we have coming up! Morning Clean- The triage centre has high traffic all day, everyday! It takes a whole team to keep the centre clean. After morning meeting the interns will share the jobs and clean the entire house top to bottom to ensure it is presentable to the public, as well as comfortable for themselves

Cage Cleaning- we often have volunteers attend the centre to assist us with cage cleaning, but it is inevitable that you will have to clean a cage or two! You may be cleaning your raccoons, squirrels, beavers, bears or maybe all the above!

Daily jobs- the daily jobs are shared amongst interns to ensure everyone is contributing to keeping the centre running. Jobs include laundry, cooking eggs or chicken, making food plates, organising the closets, sorting the deck, changing boot dips and so on. It is our job to schedule these tasks as needed around any animals in your care and the To Do List.

Lunch- your lunch will be scheduled so that not everyone is in the kitchen at once! You are allowed a 30minute lunch break, and two 15-minute breaks throughout the day. Afternoon- More cleaning, the To Do List, hopefully a rescue or exam and we try to schedule in enrichment and team building as often as we can!

Evening clean- The centre is to be cleaned top to bottom once again. Depending on the season, this may be done in the middle of the day too! After evening clean it is time to give the animals their dinner. Potties are to be changed and some animals may be locked up depending on the weather.

Relax – chill out in the common room watching a movie or go shopping or out to dinner. You might get the whole night off or just a few hours before you’re feeding again Bedtime- we have four intern cabins to sleep 25 interns. We need this many helper in baby season! Cabins are quiet places where you can nap and rest, and interns oversee keeping their own areas clean and tidy. Cabins are unisex.
