Types of interpreting

A basic distinction is made between liaison andescort interpreting and conference interpreting:

A. Liaison interpreters are required for meetings and negotiations and relay what is spoken among the various attendees present.

Interpreting techniquesConsecutive interpreting

For consecutive interpreting, the interpreting takesplace consecutively, in other words, with a delaybetween individual segments of the speaker’smessage. During these delays, the interpreterrenders the interpretation. Whilst the speaker deliv-ers the next segment of his or her message, theinterpreter notes down the ideas and thoughts ofthe speaker. As soon as the speaker has finished orpauses, the interpreter repeats what has been saidin the target language. As the message or speech isgiven twice in such a case, it is necessary to bear inmind that an event or meeting can last significantlylonger when consecutive interpreting is required.

Simultaneous interpreting

For simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter usuallysits in a sound-proof booth and receives what is saidvia headphones while observing the speaker at thesame time. He or she interprets simultaneously andcontinuously into the target language as the speakergives his speech. Usually, the simultaneous interpreterspeaks into a microphone and the interpretation isrendered to the listeners via headphones.

Simultaneous interpreting requires high levels ofconcentration. Simultaneous interpreters thus work inpairs and rotate every 15 to 20 minutes. In order toensure an exact interpretation, simultaneous inter-preters have to prepare carefully by reviewing theconference documents ahead of time.

Another form of simultaneous interpreting is whisperinterpreting (“chuchotage”). The interpreter sits next toor behind the listener and whispers into the listener’s ear.
