RATIONALEAfter conducting the interview, it was time to start gathering ideas and coming up with ideas for a logo. First off, I made a mind-map where I came up with a few things I could use as symbols/illustrations in the logo, based on what the interview subject had answered. I listed things had mentioned he liked and a few things I associated with them. I intended to list things I imagined could work well as symbols/icons/illustrations in the logo and I could incorporate his name (typographic element) with in some way.

I then began sketching, trying to figure out a way to make something from the mind-map work in a clever way with the name. After sketching/writ-ing the name a few times with a few different «typefaces», I found that the «d» in the end of the first name, could be connected with the «D» in the start of the second name so that it looked like a headset. I did a few hand-sketches and tried it out in a few different «typefaces» that remind-ed of script, normal sans-serif, and condensed sans-serif fonts. I also tried out a few various thicknesses/weights of the type.

After sketching for a while, I thought I had some good ideas that I could

work on digitally. I opened an artboard in Illustrator, and began searching for appropriate typefaces for the first idea, the headset with the «d»’s. By the sketches I had done, I knew that the typeface had to be quite thick for this to work properly, and be absolutely sure that it was recognizable and looked like a headset. I found a few options that I thought would work, and I then just tried to incorporate the head-set (half-circle thick stroked no-fill shape) together with the two letters to see which type-face worked best. I did some minor changes to the spaces between the letters as well as enlarging/changing the shape of some of them, just to get everything to look nice and even. I then want-

ed to incorporate some color, and I kept it simple

to really have the focus on what was going on with the illustration and the type, so I went with a darker grey color for the type and a blue accent color for the headset shape just to really make it stand out.

I then started with the second logo, but I didn’t really start out with sketching of any sort, as for this logo, I wanted to incorporate the snow-mobile in some way. I skipped trying to drawing a snowmobile, as I already had an idea in mind of a clever way to do this logo. Other than just putting an illustration next to the name in some way, I thought it would be cool have the illustration show inside the letters in stead. For this to work and the illustration to show/be recognizable, I would need a thick/bold and tall typeface. I had some typefaces in mind that I ended up putting next to each other, and I figured that since the first name is so short, it would

look cool to just rotate it 90 degrees to the left so that it could stand «on it’s side» next to the last name (with the same height as the first name). I thought that this placement of the names gave it a more interesting look, and the letters of last name could be even bigger - making more space to show the illustration in the letters. I then just tried out some various place-ments of the illustration of the snowmobile (source: http://www.stickthis-graphics.com/images/Snowmobile%20Silhouette%209%20(Small).jpg) inside the last name on the various typefaces I had found.

In the final logo, I have I used the same color scheme as in the first logo I made, a dark grey for the type, and blue for the illustration. I also added the blue accent color to the first name, just to make it pop a bit more and «support» the colored illustration and add some balance. I also added a white stroke to the first name, as I thought this made the transition from the blue to the grey background better.

By trying out the idea with various typefaces, it was relatively easy for me to choose the typeface that actually worked. I had to choose a typeface that I thought was showing enough of the illustration, where at the same time it was easy to make out each letter and actually read the words. I

think that the typeface I ended up choosing worked well, but it was a bit difficult to decide which version to use; the version where the illustration only shows as a colored field within the letters, or the version where the shape of the illustration actually is «carved» out from the letters. I also did the same thing with the first name, making it look like the bottom part of the name has carved out its shape in the first letter of the last name.

Nevertheless, I decided to include both logos. I made them each in various color formats (I imagined both logos could have both color formats), one white logo for dark grey backgrounds, and one dark grey logo for white backgrounds.

For the third logo, I wanted to make a more dramatic, artistic, and crea-tive illustration. Also for this logo I already had a «look» I was going for in my mind, I just had to choose an item/symbol I could use. I decided to go on with gaming illustrations, as I thought it would be the best choice for the type of illustration I had in mind. I used various photoshop paint blob/splatter brushes (in various sizes and angles) to make up the shape (source of reference: https://www.evilcontrollers.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/490x351/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/p/s/ps4-stockblack_2.png) of a gaming console controller (one color - black), and decorative splatters and blobs behind that shape in blue and red colors (which the interview subject said was his favourite colors). I then placed the name inside the controller shape, in the same way as the names were placed in the second logo. Only this time I used a narrower and thinner typeface. To repeat something from the illustration to the typographic elements, I placed the first name behind the last name (like the paint splatters/blobs behind the controller

shape) to create a interesting effect and make the type a bit more special. I used the blue color on the first name for the same reason. I tried a few various versions of how to do the type in this logo, where I for example tried clipping the names directly out from the black shape (so that you could see the blue and red behind the shape) and warping the type so that it had «followed» the shape/outline of the controller, but I didn’t think that worked very well.

I also made a quick fourth logo, which also was an idea I had in mind that I just wanted to try out. In some of the tryouts with various typefaces in the other logos I made for this assignment, I had found an interesting typeface that reminded me much of the symbols/shapes on the buttons on the playstation controller (a cross, a square, a circle and a triangle). I quickly drew up the symbols/shapes that can be found on the buttons on the con-troller, and tried to match up the colors as best as I could. I then made sure that the shapes had the same size as the letters, and I started figuring out places in the type where these shapes could fit. There weren’t any shapes that fit 100 %, but the rectangle would have fit in the «O» in the first name, but because the circle wouldn’t fit anywhere else I had to put that there instead. Even though the end result didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted or imagined it to, I think that the logo is quite interesting nevertheless and it could be nice to include it in this assignment.

All of these logos have sans-serif typeface, and have a very simple, straightforward and honest look to them. They reflect the interview sub-ject, both by showing things he is interested in, colors he like, and how he is as a person.
