 What  is  your  age?  33    What  is  your  gender?  Male    What  is  your  music  taste?  Hip  hop,  indie,  drum  and  bass;  acoustic    Do  you  read  music  magazines?  Yes  but  only  free  newspaper  pull-­‐outs.    Why  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Because  I  like  music  and  like  to  read  about  new  albums.    How  often  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Weekly    How  much  would  you  spend  on  a  magazine?  As  a  one  off  I  would  spend  up  to  £4    What  do  you  think  of  the  following  covers?    

 I  don’t  like  the  q  magazine  and  billboard  because  they  have  music  stars  from  the  pop  genre  on  the  front  and  find  that  very  off  putting  because  I  don’t  like  that  type  of  music.  However  I  do  the  q  design  because  it  reminds  me  a  little  bit  of  Sin  City.  I  also  think  that  the  red  on  her  lips,  the  title  and  ‘rocks’  works  well  because  it  is  very  eye  catching.  I  don’t  particularly  like  the  billboard  front  cover  because  of  the  colour  purple  and  the  huge  focus  on  miley  cirus.  However  I  think  the  design  is  well  balanced  and  would  definitely  appeal  to  teenage  girls.  The  rolling  stones  one  is  more  of  a  classic  style,  it  reminds  me  of  the  60s  and  feels  more  rock  n  roll  which  is  more  appealing.  It  is  more  of  an  understated  design,  which  I  like.  

What  do  you  think  of  these  inside  spread?  

     I  think  all  the  3  article  designs  are  similar  and  I  think  they  all  work  well.  The  black  and  white  design  works  particularly  well  in  the  Adele  and  o  word  article.  They  have  a  classic  feel  and  the  photos  are  nicely  composed.  I  particularly  like  the  o  word  design  because  it  uses  white  space  well  and  has  a  retro  feel  to  it.              What  content  would  you  like  included  in  a  music  magazine?    I  am  interested  in  artist  features  but  only  if  there  is  an  original  spin.  If  they  are  saying  the  same  old  cliché  then  I  am  not  interested.  Perhaps  the  most  important  thing  for  me  is  reviews.

Why  do  you  read  these  magazines?  I  don’t  read  music  magazines  because  I  am  not  interested  about  reading  about  their  lives.    How  often  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Never  music  magazines.    How  much  would  you  spend  on  a  magazine?  £3    What  do  you  think  of  these  following  magazine  front  covers?  

   I  really  like  the  colour  on  the  billboard  magazine  as  it  stands  out  and  it  appeals  to  people  of  my  age.    It  also  has  miley  Cyrus  on  the  front  who  is  a  pop  star  which  I  like  some  of  her  music.  I  like  the  design  to  the  q  magazine  but  I  would  not  buy  it  because  it  is  a  rock  magazine  and  I  am  not  into  rock  at  all.  The  rolling  stones  magazine  I  would  consider  buying  because  it  has  a  rap  star  on  it  that  I  like  to  listen  to.  I  also  really  like  the  design  to  that  magazine  because  it  is  a  simple  but  effective  design  in  which  appeals  to  both  the  genders.    What  do  you  think  of  these  inside  spreads?  

                 

     

I  really  like  the  Adele  and  the  o  word  articles  as  I  think  the  colours  are  really  effective  in  black  and  white  and  give  it  a  retro  feel  with  the  colour.  With  the  retro  feel  and  colours  it  makes  it  stand  out.  I  don’t  particularly  like  the  q  magazine  spread  because  I  don’t  think  the  colours  work  well  together  and  it  just  doesn’t  appeal  to  me.        What  would  you  like  to  see  in  a  music  magazine?  If  I  was  to  buy  a  music  magazine  I  would  like  to  see  interviews  with  them  that  interest  me,  for  example  exposing  them  about  their  bad  parts  of  her  life.  I  would  also  like  to  hear  about  their  new  and  upcoming  music  and  also  behind  the  scenes  of  them  making  their  music.      

Interview  3  What  is  your  age?  17    What  gender  are  you?  Female    What  is  your  music  taste?  I  really  like  pop,  rap  and  a  little  bit  of  rock,  but  it  depends  who  it  is.    Do  you  read  music  magazines?  Yes,  I  like  to  read  q  magazine  and  NME.    Why  do  you  read  these  magazines?  I  read  these  magazines  because  I  like  to  read  about  music  and  read  interviews  about  artists.  These  magazines  also  are  about  the  genre  of  music  that  I  enjoy,  rock  and  pop.    How  often  do  you  read  these  magazines?    I  read  these  magazines  roughly  around  once  a  month.    How  much  would  you  spend  on  a  magazine?  £4    What  do  you  think  of  these  magazine  front  covers?  

               

I  really  like  the  q  magazine  front  cover  because  I  like  the  way  that  Cheryl  Cole  is  being  shown  in  a  sexual  way.  I  also  like  reading  the  magazine  as  it  talks  about  the  music  I  enjoy,  I  also  think  its  good  value  for  money.  I  also  like  the  rolling  stones  magazine  as  with  the  colours  but  I  don’t  like  the  artist  on  the  front.  I  really  like  the  colours  on  the  billboard  magazine  but  I  am  not  interested  in  Miley  Cyrus  and  don’t  like  billboard  magazine.      What  do  you  think  of  these  inside  spreads?  

                   

   I  really  like  the  q  one  because  I  like  the  band  U2  and  I  also  enjoy  reading  the  interviews  that  q  makes.  I  really  like  the  layout  to  the  Adele  one  and  believe  the  black  and  white  makes  the  page  very  effective  and  draws  people  in.  I  do  not  like  the  o  word  article  because  I  think  the  use  of  just  grey  makes  it  look  a  bit  boring.        What  would  you  like  to  see  in  a  music  magazine?  When  I  buy  my  magazines  I  like  to  see  and  read  interviews  about  the  artists  that  I  enjoy  like  pop  and  stuff.  I  would  also  like  to  hear  about  their  inside  life.  I  also  want  to  see  nice  colours  on  the  page  that  attract  me  into  reading  it  then.

What  is  your  music  taste?  I  like  pop,  hip  hop.    Do  you  read  music  magazines?  No  but  I  would  read  a  free  music  magazine  pop  out  if  it  came  in  a  newspaper  or  something.    Why  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Because  I  like  to  keep  up  to  date  with  gossip  and  what  is  top  of  the  charts.    How  often  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Monthly,  but  not  always.    How  much  would  you  spend  on  a  music  magazine?  £2-­‐£3    What  do  you  think  of  these  magazine  front  covers?  

                         

   I  prefer  out  of  all  of  them  the  Miley  Cyrus  one  because  I  love  the  colours  that  are  being  used  and  also  she  is  a  pop  star,  which  is  what  I  like.  I  don’t  like  the  q  magazine  because  it  is  rock  n  roll  and  also  because  I  don’t  like  Cheryl  Cole.    I  don’t  like  the  rolling  stones  one  because  I  think  it’s  depressing.    What  do  you  think  of  these  inside  spreads?  

                     

The  colours  of  these  pages  put  me  off  because  they  aren’t  made  up  of  vibrant  colours  and  I  find  them  a  little  boring.  They  seem  old  fashioned  but  I  do  like  the  Adele  one  because  she  is  made  to  look  glamorous  with  her  big  hair.                What  would  you  like  to  see  in  a  music  magazine?  I  would  like  to  see  gossip  about  the  artists  and  also  about  their  upcoming  music  that  they  are  bringing  up.  It  could  also  include  some  fun  parts  of  it  like  a  quiz  about  that  pop  star.  I  would  also  like  to  see  some  big  interviews  with  big  name  artists.

What  is  your  age?  16    What  is  your  gender?  Male    What  is  your  music  taste?  Rap,  pop    Do  you  read  music  magazines?  Yes  I  read  vibe  and  occasionally  billboard.    Why  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Because  I  like  to  keep  up  to  date  with  the  music  genre  I  like  and  I  like  to  read  the  gossip  surrounding  pop  music.    How  often  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Every  time  they  come  out,  so  usually  monthly.    How  much  would  you  spend  on  a  music  magazine?  No  more  than  £5.            

What  do  you  think  of  these  music  magazine  front  covers?                            

 I  find  them  all  eye  catching,  and  it  gives  you  the  information  that  I  need  if  I  was  to  buy  a  magazine.  Out  of  all  of  them  I  prefer  the  rolling  stones  one  because  it  has  Lil  Wayne  on  the  front  and  he  is  my  favourite  rap  star.  I  don’t  think  the  q  magazine  is  for  just  because  I  am  not  interested  in  rock  music.    What  do  you  think  of  these  inside  spreads?    

                     

 I  think  that  the  o  word  article  is  a  little  boring  for  me  as  I  do  not  know  who  the  artist  is  and  it  looks  too  old  fashioned  for  me  and  that  I  would  not  know  any  of  his  songs  or  what  he  has  done  in  the  past.  I  find  the  Adele  article  very  eye  catching  as  it  has  very  large  font  used  and  a  very  large  picture  to  catch  the  eye.  The  q  magazine  one  is  boring  in  my  opinion  because  it  doesn’t  appeal  to  me  at  all.              

What  would  you  like  to  see  in  a  music  magazine?    I  would  like  to  see  more  interviews  and  facts  about  the  artists  and  what  they  do  in  their  spare  time.  Also  maybe  some  pictures  that  reveal  this  to  the  public  which  could  cause  uproar.

I  like  them  because  they  have  popular  artists  on  the  front  and  they  use  a  good  variety  of  colours  that  stand  out,  especially  billboard.      What  do  you  think  of  these  inside  spreads?  

                     

     I  think  these  are  boring  as  they  have  dark  colours  that  don’t  interest  me.  I  am  more  interested  if  they  had  more  vibrant  colours  to  them  which  help  them  stand  out.                What  would  you  like  to  see  in  a  music  magazine?  I  would  like  to  read  about  new  music  on  its  way  and  new  artist  that  are  upcoming.  Also  some  big  interviews  with  big  name  artists.

   Why  do  you  read  these  magazines?  I  don’t  but  if  I  were  too  then  it  would  be  too  keep  up  to  date  with  music  and  read  interviews  about  artists.    How  often  do  you  read  these  magazines?  If  I  were  too  then  it  would  be  monthly.    How  much  would  you  spend  on  a  music  magazine?  No  more  than  £4.    What  do  you  think  of  these  magazine  front  covers?  

                         

   I  like  the  q  magazine  front  cover  because  it  has  Cheryl  Cole  on  the  front  that  I  like  the  music  of.  I  think  she  looks  very  attractive  in  the  photo  and  she  is  very  appealing  to  the  male  readers.  I  like  the  colours  used  on  the  billboard  magazine  but  I  would  not  read  it  because  it  looks  like  it  is  more  appealing  for  the  generation  below  me.  The  rolling  stones  one  I  dislike  because  I  don’t  know  who  the  artist  is  unless  I  read  it  and  I  do  not  like  the  colours  that  are  being  used.

     I  am  not  a  fan  of  any  of  these  inside  covers  to  be  honest  because  I  find  them  very  boring  colours  and  they  don’t  stand  out  for  me  and  catch  my  eye  and  if  I  was  reading  the  magazine  I  would  probably  just  skip  the  page.  If  I  were  to  say  one  thing  I  like  about  them  it  would  be  the  Adele  one  because  I  think  she  looks  very  pretty  in  it.            What  would  you  like  to  see  in  a  music  magazine?  If  I  was  too  read  music  magazine  I  would  like  to  see  interviews  with  pop  stars  that  I  know  and  maybe  some  interviews  with  older  pop  stars  from  my  era.  I  would  also  like  to  read  about  the  chart.  Also  I  maybe  some  fun  too  it  like  a  quiz  about  that  pop  star.  I  would  also  like  to  read  into  the  personal  lives  of  the  pop  stars  and  read  something  interesting  or  revealing  about  them.

I  like  dance  anthems,  rap,  pop  and  some  country.    Do  you  read  music  magazines?  Yes  always,  I  like  to  read  rolling  stones,  vibe  and  sometimes  Q  magazine.    Why  do  you  read  these  magazines?  Because  I  love  to  read  about  the  gossip  in  the  celebrity  world  and  I  like  to  read  about  up  coming  stars  that  I  don’t  know  about.    How  often  do  you  read  these  magazines?    Often,  basically  every  time  a  new  one  comes  out.    How  much  would  you  spend  on  a  music  magazine?  £5-­‐£7    What  do  you  think  of  these  music  magazine  front  covers?  

                         

   I  really  like  all  of  these  magazine  front  covers  because  all  of  them  portray  the  sorts  of  people  that  they  are  and  how  people  stereotype  them.  I  really  like  the  way  they  have  given  Cheryl  Cole  the  sexy  wet  look  and  the  red  lipstick  goes  really  well  with  the  Q  title  and  the  headline  of  ‘rocks’.  I  really  like  the  colours  being  used  on  the  billboard  magazine  with  the  purple  but  I  do  think  it  looks  a  bit  girly  and  it  isn’t  trying  to  attract  the  male  readers.  The  rolling  stones  magazine  cover  I  think  looks  very  effective  because  it  has  used  simple  colours  that  attract  both  demographics  of  male  and  female  and  also  the  way  he  is  modelled  he  looks  very  rock  star/rap  star  with  all  his  tattoos.                    

   What  do  you  think  of  these  inside  spreads?  

   I  am  not  a  fan  of  these  inside  spreads.  The  only  one  that  catches  my  eye  is  the  Adele  one  because  it  has  very  large  text  which  attracts  the  eye  for  people  to  read  and  also  the  photo  is  very  large  of  her  which  stands  out.  She  also  looks  like  a  professional  artist  and  is  portrayed  in  that  way  too.  The  other  two  articles  look  very  boring  and  don’t  catch  my  eye  at  all  and  I  find  the  look  of  them  is  very  boring.          What  would  you  like  to  see  in  a  music  magazine?  When  I  read  my  music  magazines  I  like  to  see  big  interviews  with  artists  that  I  like.  I  also  would  like  to  be  able  to  read  into  the  personal  lives  of  the  artists  so  we  find  out  different  information  instead  of  the  boring  old  cliché  stuff.  Also  maybe  some  information  on  how  they  got  to  where  they  are  today.  Another  good  idea  would  to  have  a  quiz  on  the  artist  and  also  competitions  that  you  can  enter  to  win  prizes.
