Kurt Metcalf
General Manager Overton Hotel and Conference
Center
Applying is the First Step
• Don’t let your application get thrown into the “NO” pile.
• Pre-screening is the most important key to getting an interview.
• Be very clear with the information that you give.
• Be honest with the information.
Do Not Be Lazy!
• Fill out the application without abbreviations.• Be grammatically correct and do not misspell
words on the application. • Don’t be vague. • Make yourself available to the interviewer. • If you have the opportunity to interview, be
there when the occupation wants to hold the interview. Don’t try to negotiate the time and date of the interview.
Body Language
• Be courteous, attentive, humble and confident. All of these things can be recognized without you even saying a word.
• How is your hygiene? Do you have clean hair? A fresh shave? Do you smell like a foot? Do you have coffee breath? Clean clothing?
• Don’t slouch. Don’t be too aggressive. Sit down only when told, otherwise after the interviewer takes his/her seat.
Mr. Metcalf’s First Question
• Q: Tell me about yourself…
• A: Professionals will not give personal information.
• Think of a way to market yourself using work experience and occupational accomplishments. Employers don’t care about your family activities on your days off, or if you like watching ESPN or The Walking Dead.
3 Minutes
• Most Employers know if they are going to hire a candidate within 5 minutes of the interview. Mr. Metcalf only needs about three.
• Remember to exude a positive attitude and appearance. Don’t walk into the interview late, or looking like yesterday’s b*tch.
• Avoid talking too much, listen first.• Don’t ask questions about décor in the room or
on the wall, that is not why you are there.
3 Minutes continued…
• Don’t waste the interviewer’s time.
• Mr. Metcalf wants to hire, but he needs to be impressed. It all starts with the application.
• Once again, fill out your application VERY carefully. Don’t let it get thrown away.
