Margaret (Peggy) Roman was born in Pittsburgh PA in 1942. She graduated TaylorAllderdice High School in 1960. In 1964 she graduated the University of Pittsburgh, PhiBeta Kappa with a major in English. In 1965 she graduated the University of Pittsburgh

Graduate School of Library and Informational Sciences.

Eric was born in a log cabin in Masontown PA in 1942 and moved two months later to Pittsburgh. He graduatedCentral Catholic High School in Pittsburgh with Sudden Sam McDowell. This school was also home to DanMarino. In 1964 he graduated the University of Pittsburgh with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Eric and Peggy met while working in the library at the University of Pittsburgh. They have been married for 52years and have two children Karen Helfrich & husband Rob and Amy Dundon and husband Mark, twograndchildren Jessica and Zach Helfrich, three grand dogs Sam, Sadie and Grace. They also have the muchpampered Malfi who lets them live in her house in Bailey’s Glen. During their marriage, they have enjoyedtraveling to 30 countries, belonged to the Great Dane Club of Western Pennsylvania where Eric was VP. Their twoGreat Danes, Tara and Tawny were shown in dog shows. Tara had a litter of 9 puppies, one of which was Tawny.Until the puppies were sold, the Stefanko house truly went to the dogs.

Peggy was a reference librarian for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She volunteered at the kids’ schoollibraries and for the Northland Public Library of McCandless and the Shaler Township Library. After almostcompleting a twoyear degree in computer science at Allegheny Community College, Peggy wrote custom softwarefor Marshall Elevator Company. During their last 15 years in Pittsburgh, Peggy became deeply involved incommunity beautification. As President of McIntyre Garden Club, Peggy designed two separate large communitygarden projects that were each awarded the National Hazel Herring Garden Award by the National Woman’sFarm and Garden Club. The Stefanko personal garden was on the Western Pennsylvania Garden Tour, and theUPMC Passavant Hospital Enchanted Garden Tour. Peggy was then asked to chair the Enchanted Garden Tourand be chairman of the garden selection committee for several years. In 1999 she became a board member of theUPMC Passavant Hospital foundation where she continued hospital campus beautification projects and served aschairman of the new Healing Garden Committee.

After graduation, Eric began work in the steel industry with J&L Steel, and after various positions working fordesign and manufacturing companies, retired in 2005 as Senior Executive VP and COO with Marshall ElevatorCompany. Eric was initially hired in 1972 to work as a design engineer, but over 33 years, he became responsiblefor all MECO’s manufacturing and field operations. MECO manufactured specialty lifts which were installed intall transmission towers (1000 to 2000 feet) all over the world. One interesting note was that MECO designed andbuilt the elevator that transported the workmen to the construction cranes building the St. Louis Arch. MECOwas also a distributor for Dover Elevator and installed and serviced residential and commercial elevators in the tristate area. Some of its customers included the University of Pittsburgh, Mellon Bank, and Pittsburgh hospitals. One of Eric’s last projects before retiring was the installation of all the elevators and escalators in the home of thesixtime Super Bowl Champions, the PITTSBURGH STEELERS, also known as Heinz Field.

The Stefankos moved to Whispering Pines NC in 2005 to live on a golf course. Peggy volunteered as a MooreCounty Literacy Tutor and at the thrift shop, and Eric was a Marshall in the 2005 Men’s Open Championship, the2014 Men’s and 2014 Women’s Open Championship tournaments at Pinehurst No. 2. Both he and Peg worked atthe 2007 Women’s Open Golf Championship Tournament. After Eric had knee replacement surgery and golfstopped being fun, a move to an over 55 community looked appealing. Thankfully, they found Bailey’s Glen.Daughter Amy and her husband Mark living 2 miles away is an added bonus for them.

In Bailey’s Glen Peggy is still messing around in the dirt. Now all of Eric’s numerous golf clubs and golfparaphernalia are somewhere in the garage, and he has become a bocce, corn hole, and pool guy while stillemploying his creativity making and designing stained glass windows.

From the Lyon’s Denby Larry Lyon

This morning I had coffee and donuts with guys named Mike, Sam, Joe, Pete,Chuck, two fellows named Don and no surprise, three fellows named Bob, amongothers.

We were together in the game room of the Bailey’s Glen club house (or is it the meeting house?).

It kind of felt like my freshman high school English class in 1965, when I could look around theclassroom, and I swear, I could see fellows named Mike, Sam, Joe, Pete, Chuck, two Dons andthree Bobs.

Among the amazing things about moving into Bailey’s Glen is that it is like stepping back in time.Even the names ring familiar.

Gone are the Aidens and the Graysons and the Liams and the Coles and the Briannas andMikaylas and the Haleys of today’s world.

Naming children these days has become such an art form. There are a gazillion different names, and at times, they are bewildering to me. Even I have grandsons named Xavier and Oliver (x ando).

When I find myself these days at a graduation ceremony, I am not bored, unlike many others inthe audience. That’s because I amuse myself by studying the first names of the graduates, andactually counting them. It is hard to find the same first name used more than a few times.

That wasn’t the case back in my day.

I bet you when I graduated with 500plus others from Fort Hunt High School in 1969, you couldfind 30 Johns, 25 Jims, 25 Bobs, 20 Mikes, 22 Joes, 18 Davids, 30 Marys, 25 Debbies, 25 Susans,20 Carols, and maybe even five Larrys (“Larry” almost has disappeared from the namelandscape).

Question: what happened to all those nice people?

Answer: They grew up, and in the 21st Century, apparently moved to Bailey’s Glen.

I find myself saying a lot these days, “Hello, MIKE…JOE…. BOB, nice to meet you.” I have yetto meet a Gareth or an Isabella. If I ever do, I suspect they will be the much younger spouse ofthe 55 and over Bailey’s Glen qualifying adult.

It is all kind of nice, and even more comfortable. If I forget someone’s name, chances are I canjust mumble “Bob” and be in the name ballpark. And like me, they don’t hear too well anyway.

It is also nice to live among people who actually remember who Ike, Lyndon, Ringo, and MickJagger were, and can recall where they were on Nov. 22, 1963. People here can even rememberwhen the Dallas Cowboys were good in football and the New York Yankees were good in baseball.(Sorry…I couldn’t resist…I am a fan of Washington D.C. teams).

This is a good place to live. If you don’t believe it, just ask Mike, or Debbie, or Mary. They willtell you. So will this “Larry.”

Heat Warnings for Summer Yard Careby Bob Shaw

Well, the hot summer weather has returned and so has the dangerous temperaturesfor your yard as well as your bodies. We all know to wear sun screen when theweather is this intense. Well the same holds true for your yard this time of year.Really, I mean REALLY, do not turn off your sprinklers this summer unless we getseveral inches of rain over several days. The clay soil here does not ‘pot’ well at all! That means that if we get a lot of inches all at once, most of it will drain off into thestorm sewers. Now slow rain over several days is different and it will sink in andbuild strong root patterns.

If most of your yard goes brown quickly, you are not applying enough water. That iscalled grass ‘shock’. Your summer watering will be the highest for the year. Rightnow as we get 100 degree temps, you need to water at least 3 times per week.Watering needs to be early in the morning before sun up and more will soak in thistime of day. Do NOT water early in the evening as this can cause ‘brown patch’ whichcan become a BIG problem if not caught early and treated. The grass and soil is stillradiating heat and is most vulnerable in this overheated condition just like humans.

All of you need to have Jonathan’s phone number handy if you see any of this ‘brownpatch’. He is our yard contractor and has to jump into action to treat it quickly as itspreads like a rash. It is not fun and flat ugly to look at so check your yard a coupletimes each week in the morning sunlight.

Jonathan’s phone number is: 7146770123 He and his crew work very hard eachweek but we have to do our part by keeping an eye out for brown spots in our yardsor other unusual grass colorings.

So keep cool this summer and keep a ‘cool’ eye on your yard.

The Bailey's Glen Kayak Club paddle on June 11 was everything we could have hoped itwould be. The lake was quiet, the winds were calm, it was sunny but not too hot and allthe equipment and kayaks worked well

The group of 7 took off promptly at 9 am and were in the water atLake Norman State Park before 10 am. With a mixture of new andexperienced paddlers, the group slipped alongthe forested shore down to a bridge in a quietinlet. There were ospreys, kingfishers, andturtles keeping us company as we glidedsilently along. We were back on the shore,

enjoying our packed lunches just after noon and back at Bailey'sGlen by 1:30 pm.

Today, June 13 members of the BG Gearheads took to the go kart track at the GoPro Motorplex inMooresville in an attempt to take the Top Gear Trophy from Bob Hixon. Bob did not give up easily butafter the smoke settled at the end of the race Ed Vanek prevailed with Jack Higgins second and StuPatch third. Although considered no protests were filed. But Bob was heard to say "just wait until nexttime!". A great time was had by all and you can bet that Ed is in the crosshairs of everyone for the nextrace.

Gearheads Visit Streetside Classics

Fifteen Bailey’s Glen residents toured Streetside Classic Cars on June 16th. They heard managerMike Videl explain the business model of this consignment sales approach. He then encouraged theattendees to view the 75 cars and trucks on display in the showroom. Resident Bob Hixon fell in lovewith an immaculate lowmileage 1998 Mercedes 500SL and purchased it.The group enjoyed lunch at Hickory Tavern after the tour.

You won't believe this, but when I got to the coop today to do my chores, therewas Dame Edna Everidge giving a live interview to CNN, the Chicken NewsNetwork. She was explaining her proposal for a new monetary system that shecalls "The New Eggonomy". It would replace the somewhat shaky EURO with theeverpopular EGGO. I immediately checked the latest issue of "The New YOLKTimes". It noted that the almighty EGGO really got cooking after its Initial Poultry

Offering. "People have been hungering for this sizzling new currency," Ednaclucked. "They're gobbling them up like hotcakes!" Even the recent Harris Teeter ToasterPoll noted that "humans that trade in pancakes is up a hefty thirtythree percent". (go tohttp//:http/http/http).

So, despite these lessthanglowing comments, Dame Edna is still clucking her messageloudly and clearly. "To all of you investors out there, EGGOs are heating up," she says. "Ifyou have some in your nest egg, don't leggo."

EDITORS NOTE: THIS STORY SHOULD CERTAINLY BOOST DON'S "EGGO"!

Pickleball in the Glen

On June 18th we had eighteen residents competing in our first Bailey’s Glen Kings & QueensPickleball Mixer of the year. They played for coveted awards presented to the top player in eachgroup. This year the weather was hot and the competition was even hotter! Many players showcasedsome new skills, as the group seems to defy age and improve every year!!

I was pleased to see that we had newer, intermediate and advanced players. The participants weredivided into three groups, based on skill level. Each group had a winner, and that person was eitherthe king or queen of their group.

One group winner was Jacqui Zuber, and she earned the title of Pickleball Queen for this event. Shemissed a perfect score for her five matches by only one point. The other two competitive groupswere won by Larry Wragg and Ed Vanek. They both deserved to be crowned our Pickleball Kings forthis mixer. This was Ed’s second coronation, as he was also a Pickleball King last year.

Special mention goes out to Ernie Donadio, Richard Zuber, Nancy Campbell, Stuart Patch, RodBratton and Susan “The Perfect 50” Weber. They all played very well and ended up second or third intheir group! Congratulations to all who participated in this fun event!!

RESIDENT COORDINATION TEAM (RCT)WE NEEDYOUR HELP

TO: RESIDENTS OF BAILEY'S GLENFROM: YOUR RESIDENT COORDINATION TEAM (RCT)SUBJECT: BAILEY'S GLEN CONTRACTOR OPEN HOUSE

Your RCT is in the planning stages of sponsoring a Contractor Open House with theobjective of enabling all residents to directly interface with contractors on a broad rangeof craft services. Tentative plans are to hold this event at the clubhouse in Sept or Oct.Each contractor will have a table to display their marketing information and be availablefor your personal discussions. Contractors will be encouraged to provide incentives forresidents to participate. (door prizes, free services, raffles, gift certificates, etc.)

It is important that we invite a select group of quality contractors to this event. It will berequired that all contractors invited be insured, bonded, and be licensed whereapplicable. Another requirement will be that they are highly recommended by ourresidents or our developer. If you have used a contractor that you feel should beconsidered, please complete and submit the attached form. An inventory of thoserecommended will be maintained for future resident reference.

We may not be able to accommodate all suggested contractors and may need to limit thenumber of particular craft services. We are NOT looking for companies that offer thefollowing: (computer repairs/training, house/window cleaning, phone/internet/TVservices, etc.)

We are looking for contractors who offer craftsmanship in the following categories:

OUTSIDE HOUSE MAINTENANCE (House/porch/patio/driveway cleaning, irrigation,tree/shrub replacement, painting, etc.)

INSIDE HOUSE MAINTENANCE (Painting, electrical, plumbing, misc. repairs, countertop/grout sealing, dry wall repairs, handyman services, duct cleaning, etc.)

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS THAT INCREASE PROPERTYVALUE (Major Bath/kitrenovation, major landscape improvements, garage/porch/patio coatings, windowtreatment, fencing, awnings, screen doors, fans, insulation, solar lights, cabinets, etc.)

The success of our effort will only be as good as the list of suggested contractingcompanies that are provided by our residents. Please complete the form as provided andreturn it to the designated box at the clubhouse desk. All suggestions must be returned byJuly 31. Thanks for your help.
