    INTRODUCTION ABOUT HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

The hospitality industry consists of broad category of fields within the service industry that

includes lodging, restaurants, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and

additional fields within the tourism industry. The hospitality industry is a several billion dollar

industry that mostly depends on the availability of leisure time and disposable income. A

hospitality unit such as a restaurant, hotel, or even an amusement park consists of multiple

groups such as facility maintenance, direct operations (servers, housekeepers, porters,

kitchen workers, bartenders, etc.), management, marketing, and human resources.

The hospitality industry covers a wide range of organizations offering food service andaccommodation. The hospitality industry is divided into sectors according to the skill-sets

required for the work involved. Sectors include accommodation, food and beverage, meeting

and events, gaming, entertainment and recreation, tourism services, and visitor information.

Usage rate is an important variable for the hospitality industry. Just as a factory owner would

wish to have his or her productive asset in use as much as possible (as opposed to having

to pay fixed costs while the factory isn't producing), so do restaurants, hotels, and theme

parks seek to maximize the number of customers they "process".

In viewing various industries, "barriers to entry" by newcomers and competitive advantages

between current players are very important. Among other things, hospitality industry players

find advantage in old classics (location), initial and ongoing investment support (reflected in

the material upkeep of facilities and the luxuries located therein), and particular themes

adopted by the marketing arm of the organization in question (such as a restaurant called

the 51st fighter group that has a WW2 theme in music and other environmental aspects).

Very important is also the characteristics of the personnel working in direct contact with the

customers. The authenticity, professionalism, and actual concern for the happiness and well-

being of the customers that is communicated by successful organizations is a clearcompetitive advantage.

    HISTORY

The word hospitality derives from the Latin hospes, which is formed from hostis, which

originally meant a ) to have power. The meaning of "host" can be literally read as "lord of

strangers." hostire means equalize or compensate.

In the Homeric ages, hospitality was under the protection of Zeus, the chief deity of the

Greek pantheon. Zeus was also attributed with the title 'Xenios Zeus' ('xenos' means

stranger), emphasizing the fact that hospitality was of the utmost importance. A stranger

passing outside a Greek house could be invited inside the house by the family. The host

washed the stranger's feet, offered food and wine, and only after the guest was comfortable

could ask his or her name.

The Greek concept of sacred hospitality is illustrated in the story of Telemachus and Nestor.

When Telemachus arrived to visit Nestor, Nestor was unaware that his guest was the son of

his old comrade Odysseus. Nonetheless, Nestor welcomes Telemachus and his party

lavishly, thus demonstrating the relationship between hostis, "stranger," and hostire,

"equalize," and how the two combine in the concept of hospitality.

Later, one of Nestor's sons slept on a bed close by Telemachus to take care that he should

not suffer any harm. Nestor also put a chariot and horses at Telemachus' disposal so that he

could travel the land route from Pylos to Sparta rapidly, and set his son Pisistratus as the

charioteer. These illustrate the two other elements of ancient Greek

    hospitality, protection and guidance.

Based on the story above and its current meaning, hospitality is about

compensating/equalizing a stranger to the host, making him feel protected and taken care of,

and at the end of his hosting, guiding him to his next destination.

    EXAMPLES OF HOSPITALITY SECTOR

    Lodging

Lodging (or a holiday accommodation) is a type of residential accommodation. People

who travel and stay away from home for more than a day need lodging for sleep, rest,

safety, shelter from cold temperatures or rain, storage of luggage and access to common

    household functions.

Lodgings may be self catering in which case no food is laid on but cooking facilities are

    available.

Lodging is done in a hotel, hostel or hostal, a private home (commercial, i.e. a bed and

breakfast, a guest house, a vacation rental, or non-commercially, with members of hospitalityservices or in the home of friends), in a tent, caravan/camper (often on a campsite). In

    addition there are make-shift solutions.

Sleeping is typically done lying in a bed, or more generally on a soft surface, such as an air

mattress, a couch, etc. Some trains have sleeping.

Sometimes people sleep sitting, because lying is not possible, such as in a train (if not in a

sleeping car), a bus, a seat in a waiting room or a bench on the street or in a park. Inclinable

seats allow something between sitting and lying. Whether lying on a row of seats is possible

and comfortable depends on the presence of arm rests, and whether they can be moved up.

In some public places, lying would be possible, but is not permitted.

    RESTAURANTS

A restaurant prepares and serves food, drink and dessert to customers. Meals are generally

served and eaten on premises, but many restaurants also offer take-outand food delivery

services. Restaurants vary greatly in appearance and offerings, including a wide variety

    of cuisines and service models.

While inns and taverns were known from antiquity, these were establishments aimed at

travellers, and in general locals would rarely eat there. Modern restaurants, as businesses

dedicated to the serving of food, and where specific dishes are ordered by the guest and

generally prepared according to this order, emerged only in 18th-century Europe, although

similar establishments had also developed in China.

A restaurant owner is called a restaurateur; both words derive from the French

verbrestaurer, meaning "to restore". Professional artisans of cooking are called chefs, while

prep staff and line cooks prepare food items in a more systematic and less artistic fashion.

    THEME PARK

Amusement park and theme park are terms for a group of rides and other entertainmentattractions

assembled for the purpose of entertaining a large group of people. An amusement park is more

elaborate than a simple city park or playground, usually providing attractions meant to cater tochildren, teenagers, and adults.

A theme park is differentiated from an amusement park by its various 'lands' (sections) devoted to

telling a particular story. These lands are characterized by the idea that the immersive environment

they create contains architecture, landscaping, stores, rides, and even food that support a specific

theme. Visual intrusion from other 'lands', or from outside the park, are considered undesirable. Non-

theme amusement park rides will usually have little in terms of theming or additional design elements.

Also, a single themed attraction by itself does not qualify an amusement park as a theme park. It

takes a multiplicity of elements in a common area to define a 'land', and numerous lands to constitute

a theme park. The original theme park, and archetype of the designation is Disneyland in Anaheim,

    California.

Amusement parks evolved in Europe from fairs and pleasure gardens which were created for

peoples recreation. The oldest amusement park of the world (opened 1583) is Bakken, at

Klampenborg, north of Copenhagen, Denmark. In the United States, world's fairs and expositions

were another influence on development of the amusement park industry.

Most amusement parks have a fixed location, as compared to traveling funfairs and carnivals. These

temporary types of amusement parks are usually present for a few days or weeks per year, such as

funfairs in the United Kingdom, and carnivals (temporarily set up in a vacant lot or parking)

and fairs (temporarily operated in a fair ground) in the United States. The temporary nature of these

fairs helps to convey the feeling that people are in a different place or time.
