We have patients who come into Eden Spa who are uninsured or under-insured. As part of our mission, Eden Spa will work with the patient to assist as needed in aquiring a wig, mastectomy bra, breast form and/or compression garment. Eden Spa and the Florida Hospital Foundation raise funds for cancer patients who have a need they cannot meet fi nancially and we offer assistance according to Florida Hospital’s fi nancial guidelines.

If you have a wig in good condition and are no longer wearing it, we do accept donated wigs. Our cosmetologist will wash, sanitize and style the wig for our Angels Closet. We often will use the donated items for women and children who do not have the means to obtain a cranial prosthesis.

We realize that sometimes the most powerful healing comes from within. Please contact us for further information on this program.

Rediscovering

by Michele Coipel Certifi ed Mastectomy Fitter & Licensed Massage Therapist

We understand that your number one goal when

choosing a bra or breast form is to have symmetry so you look like yourself.

As a Certifi ed Mastectomy Fitter, I have the opportunity each day to help woman who are facing the challenges of restoring symmetry for a balanced silhouette due to biopsies, breast con-serving surgeries, mastectomies and reconstruction. This is very important to most women not only for their self image but peace of mind as well. Many of my patients thank me for helping them to feel like a whole woman again. What a truly rewarding experi-ence for not only the patient but me as well. continued on page 9

At Eden Spa, we believe the most powerful healing comes from within.

Link Here for our specialty services for cancer patients.

My patients are truly grateful to be able to come to a place that is not only beautiful but, safe and pri-vate as well. We work very hard on a daily basis to provide a tranquil environment, while trying to meet the individual needs of our patients as we conquer the challenges before us and rediscover the image of beauty in each of our clients.

Your initial consultation will focus on your expecta-tions and needs. More often than not we begin this journey together before any of your surgeries. I fi t you with a post surgical garment providing you with not only comfort but convenience as well. These garments are made of an ultra soft material for com-fort and include pouches for drain management and fi ber fi lled forms used to create symmetry for the post operative phase.Image Discovery

Once you recover from your initial surgery we will begin our journey towards image discovery! De-pending on the path you have chosen we will ex-amine the appropriate product line available for you. You will try on and compare many different options of breast forms and mastectomy bras. If you should choose to have reconstruction we have breast forms that will help maintain symmetry throughout

the reconstructive phase. This can be a long process and diffi cult for women to feel comfortable with their physical appearance. At the end of this phase you will have the option to reconstruct your nipple but if for whatever reason you choose not to or are unable to complete this phase of reconstruction we can choose a silicone nipple for you. These will attach securely to a breast form or reconstructed breast with a silicone adhesive. We can determine the exact size and color that is needed. In addition to this type of form we also have avail-able to us what I like to call balance “shapers”. These are a shell like form used to create symmetry for either lumpectomy patient or the patient who has a reconstructed breast that does not fi ll out the apex of a bra or simply just does not have the shape that a she is comfortable with. These forms will fi t securely in the pocket of any mastectomy bra and create not only symmetry but a form or shape that is appealing to their eye. If you choose not to have any recon-struction we have full silicone breast forms and fi -ber fi lled forms that can also create symmetry and a beautiful silhouette. There are many different shapes and sizes for us to work with. Together we will fi nd the perfect fi t for you. You will leave feeling confi dent in your appearance and satisfi ed with the image we have discovered together!

Studies of massage for cancer patients suggest massage can decrease stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and fatigue. Many health care profes-sionals recognize massage as a useful, noninvasive addition to standard medical treatment. Therapeutic massage is most often given by trained massage therapists. Caregivers can also be trained in safe massage tech-niques.

Massage is recommended by some health care professionals as a com-plementary therapy. Supporters believe massage can help reduce stress, anxiety, and pain in people who have serious illnesses such as cancer. It is also known to help relax muscles. Many people fi nd that massage brings a temporary feeling of well-being and relaxation. Massage is also used to relieve pain and stiffness, increase mobility, rehabilitate injured muscles, and reduce the pain of headaches and backaches.

Some practitioners claim massage raises the body’s production of endorphins (chemicals believed to im-prove overall mood) and fl ushes the waste product lactic acid out of muscles. Proponents also claim mas-sage promotes recovery from fatigue produced by excessive exercise, breaks up scar tissue, loosens mu-cus in the lungs, promotes sinus drainage, and helps arthritis, colds, and constipation.

Proponents claim a type of massage called myother-apy can reduce 95% of all muscle-related pain and, in some cases, can take the place of pain-relieving drugs. They say the techniques used in myotherapy relax muscles and improve muscle strength, fl exibility, and coordina-tion; relieve pain; reduce the need for pain medicines; increase blood circulation; improve stamina and sleep patterns; and correct pos-ture imbalances.

There are many types of massage, including Swedish massage, sports massage, neuromuscular therapy, myotherapy, and others (see our document Acupressure, Shiat-su, and Other Asian Bodywork). Swedish massage is one of the most common types of massage used in the United States today, although most massage therapists com-bine a number of different styles and techniques.

In all forms of massage, therapists use their hands (and sometimes forearms, elbows, and massage tools) to manipulate the body’s soft tissue. Massage strokes can vary from light and shallow to fi rm and deep and from slow steady pressure to quick tapping. The type of massage stroke will depend on the health and needs of the individual and the training and style of the massage therapist. During active treatment for cancer, special considerations may apply. While massage appears promising for symptom

management and improving quality of life, available scientifi c evidence does not support claims that mas-sage slows or reverses the growth or spread of can-cer. A growing number of health care professionals recognize massage as a useful addition to conven-tional medical treatment. A 2005 review of research reported that massage therapy has been shown to reduce pain and anxiety in randomized controlled trials. Large, well-controlled studies are still needed to determine the long-term health benefi ts of massage.

A special type of massage called man-ual lymph drainage (MLD) is done as part of Complex Decongestive Ther-apy (CDT), which is used to treat lymphedema after certain cancer surgeries. CDT also includes external compression garments, special exer-cises, and skin care. This treatment is usually done by lymphedema special-ists rather than general-practice mas-sage therapists. Studies suggest that outcomes of this 4-part treatment can be very good if started early enough.

Are there any possible problems or complications?People with rheumatoid arthritis,

cancer that has spread to the bone, spine injuries, osteoporosis, or other bone diseases that could be worsened by physical manipulation should avoid physical manipulation or deep pressure. Manipula-tion of a bone that is already weakened by cancer metastasis could result in a bone fracture. People who have had radiation therapy may fi nd even light touch on the treatment area to be uncomfortable. A few people have allergic reactions to lotions or oils used during massage, and this may be more common among patients receiving radiation treatment.

Patients with low blood platelet counts (a common side effect of chemotherapy) or who are taking

blood-thinning medication such as warfarin (Couma-din) may be susceptible to easy bruising and should ask their doctor whether massage is safe for them.

Another concern for people who have cancer is that, in theory, tissue manipulation in the area of a tumor might increase the risk that cancer cells will travel to other parts of the body. It might be prudent for can-cer patients to avoid massage near tumors and lumps that could be cancerous until this question is clearly answered.

People with cancer and chronic conditions such as arthritis and heart disease should consult their phy-sicians before undergoing any type of therapy that involves manipulation of joints and muscles. Massage

should be provided by a trained professional with expertise in working safely with people with cancer and with cancer survivors. It is important that the massage therapist know about your cancer and its treatment. Generally, gentle massage and bodywork can be adapted to meet the needs of cancer patients.

It is also important for people who have cancer to let their medical care provider know they are receiving massage. Family members and other caregivers can be instructed in certain massage techniques as well. Relying on this treatment alone and delaying or avoid-ing conventional medical care for cancer may have serious health consequences.

Tighten & Brighten your skinWe all want our skin to have that healthy radiant glow during the summer. Eating foods that are rich in beta-carotene and lycopene will enhance that sun kissed look, especially in individuals with a paler complexion. The color shift in skin is associated with the pigments that give some fruits and vegetable their reddish vibrant hues. Vitamins A, B, C, E and K are also cited as the most active vitamins to promote skin health and encourage collagen and elastin production to tighten the skin.

• Cantaloupe• Carrots• Mangoes• Red bell peppers• Sweet potatoes• Blueberries• Broccoli• Tomatoes

Beautiful hairVitamin C is essential to keep hair looking shiny. It also promotes good blood fl ow to the scalp, keeping the skin and hair hydrated and looking its best. Vitamin B is another vitamin that is also great for the growth and overall health of your hair. You can also increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids found in many fi sh to promote that eye catching sheen. These summer foods will leave you with the shiniest and healthiest hair possible:

• Avocados• Pineapple• Tuna• Watermelon

Oral CareLet your smile be your best summer accessory. Most people know that calcium promotes strong bones and teeth, but there are also several summer seasonal fruits that can aide in a bright smile as well. Vitamin D is crucial for oral health since it allows your body to absorb and use calcium. Surprisingly, some citrus fruits help keep your gums healthy by strengthening blood vessels and connective tissue. Incorporate these summer foods into your diet to maintain your healthiest smile and be proud to show off those pearly whites:

• Grapefruits• Limes• Strawberries• Tangerines

Eye ProtectionThe Florida sun can be unforgiving to your eyes and excess exposure over time can trigger cataracts and other vision issues. Most people believe that cataracts only affect people of their grandparent’s age, but cataracts can start to develop as early as your 20’s and 30’s. You can protect your eyes externally with a hat and sunglasses, but you can also protect your eyes internally with some of the food you consume. Food that contain Lutein and zeaxanthin compounds actually fi lter out damaging blue-light rays. To give your eyes the most protection possible, incorporate these summer seasonal foods into your diet:

• Collard greens• Corn• Peas• Spinach• Turnip greens
