(MATADOC)Introduction and Background
19 May, 20179 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Robert Lerman Music Library at Norton Audubon Hospital
The Music Therapy Assessment Tool for Awareness in Disorders of Consciousness (MATADOC) is a standardized diagnostic music-based measure validated for use with adults with Disorders of Consciousness (DOC). The
MATADOC provides a rigorous assessment of people whose awareness is difficult to clinically assess due to severe brain damage.
This presentation will cover the background to adult and child DOC populations, and the latest evidence for why music works in diagnosis, assessment and treatment. The rationale and research supporting the MATADOC
will provide clinicians with an overview for an improved understanding of the work carried out by music therapists utilizing it in the assessment and treatment of minimally responsive populations.
Dr. Wendy Magee is Associate Professor at Temple University, Philadelphia. She has practiced in neurological rehabilitation since 1988 as a music therapy clinician, researcher, manager and trainer (USA, UK, Ireland and Australia) with adults and children with complex disabilities stemming from acquired brain injury. Dr Magee is widely published, spanning neuroscience, medicine, rehabilitation, psychology, music therapy and health sociology, including a Cochrane Review. She has been involved since 1990 in developing and research measures for minimally responsive populations.
This presentation is approved for 2 nursing CEUs.
