Summary
A network is a connected collection of devices that cancommunicate with each other. Networks carry data in manykinds of environments, including homes, small businesses, andlarge enterprises.
There are four major categories of physical components in acomputer network: the computer, interconnections, switches, and routers.
The major resources that are shared in a computer networkinclude: data and applications, peripherals, storage devices, andbackup devices.
The most common network user applications include e-mail,web browser, instant messaging, collaboration, and database.

Summary (Cont.)
Network administration software allows people responsiblefor managing networks to see what is happening on thenetwork. The two primary types of network administrationsoftware are network monitoring software (such as protocol
analyzers and sniffing software) and network managementsoftware.
The ways in which networks can be described includecharacteristics that address network performance andstructure: speed, cost, security, availability, scalability, reliability, and topology.
