Broadband Video Telephony for ILECs Two phone number allocation schemes:

Two schemes for call initiation: After a number is dialed, two soft buttons are available:

VOICE and VIDEO. The user will choose between the two.

A call is always initiated with PSTN voice. IP call will be initiated when switch to video, and the PSTN call will only be disconnected after the video call has been established.

A MONTH after launching the nation's first public trial of third-generation (3G) mobile telephones, SingTel is offering another one-month try-out: a service that lets people make video callswith a special phone plugged into a broadband modem.

SingTel's trial is the first from a telco here to connect both mobile and fixed-line telephone users. Mr Lim Chuan Poh, the company's executive vice-president of consumer business, said it is part of SingTel's 'video trilogy' strategy that will allow users to make video calls to one another, whether they are using a 3G phone, fixed-line video phone or a PC with a Web camera.

The key, said SingTel, is ease of use. A user only has to dial a phone number. If the dialled number belongs to a video phone, the system automatically detects it and sets up the video connection. If not, a standard voice call is connected.
