SESSION REPORT

The Session held its regular monthly meeting on October 10, 2017, joined by the Reverend James Gilbert, representative of the Presbytery of Transylvania’s Pastoral Transition Commission. This is a summary of the reports received and actions taken at that meeting. OLD BUSINESS None. COMMITTEE REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Report from the Interim Search Committee (Steve Messer and Tom Quilligan) The Committee recommended that the Reverend Jane Ann Love be called to serve as Interim Pastor, and distributed a draft of the Covenant that would define the terms of her call. After hearing the Committee’s report and reviewing the draft, the Session approved the recommendation to call Reverend Love according to the terms set out in the Covenant. Budget and Finance (Tom Quilligan and Bill Garriott) The Committee report was distributed at the meeting. Non-pledged giving increased in September, while pledged giving decreased. Through the first nine months of 2017, our income is about $30,000 less than anticipated, and our expenses are about $15,000 greater than planned. A review of account balances showed them to be adequate to meet our anticipated needs in October. The Committee recommended that a report of congregational giving be included in one Grain of Salt each month in addition to the Session Report in the Salt Shaker. The Session approved this recommendation. Pledged and Non-Pledged Congregational Giving, January-September, 2017 Year-to-Date Budgeted: $342,409.50 Year-to-Date Actual: $319,653.02 Children’s Formation (Laurie Pierce) Children and youth will prepare and serve the Arnold Tower meal on October 19. The children will wear their Halloween costumes. The Halloween Social will be Wednesday, October 25, from 5:30-8:00. The Christmas Pageant will be on Sunday, December 17, at the 11:00 service. Youth Formation (Hannah McIntyre) The “Flamingo Flocking” raised more than $3500 for Youth programs. Stewardship (Bill Garriott) On the recommendation of the Committee, the Session approved designating November 19th as “Commitment Sunday,” with a congregational breakfast at 9:00 and one worship service at 10:00. This is a change from the original calendar, which scheduled the single service on November 12. Worship and Music (Mark Hoebelheinrich and Rita Bloom) The Committee’s report included plans for Reformation Sunday, October 29th. The service will include a play directed by Liz Orndorff, which will be performed at both services. World Mission (Beth Morgan) The Christmas Gift Market is scheduled for December 3rd.

THE LEGACY FUND NOTEBOOK

NEW BUSINESS The Session approved the following motions:

That James (Jay) Hoebelheinrich be baptized on Sunday, November 12, 2017. That communion, by intinction, be served at the wedding of Mark Tibbles and Casey

Huggins on Saturday, October 14, 2017. That the Hunger Grant Application for Grace Café be approved and sent to the Presbytery

of Transylvania. Bill Garriott Assistant Clerk

I thought I would go the traditional route for this month's Legacy Notebook article. After all we celebrate Thanksgiving on November 23rd. So why give thanks in the first place? Originally our forefathers were thankful for the completion of the harvest. So many things can go wrong during the year (drought, disease, insects, wind storms, flooding or an early freeze for example) that the only statistic that really matters is how much of your crop made it to safe storage. The second thing to be thankful for was if what you harvested was enough to keep you alive through the winter. If you had enough, that alleviated a lot of worry. It also raised the possibility that out of your abundance you might share with others. A third thing to be thankful for was if you now knew you did not have enough food you had time to do something about it (Plan B) like go hunting, gathering greens, bartering or begging. Life throughout the year is really like that. Harvests come in and we know where we stand. Most of us live in abundance and have more than we really need. That gives us an opportunity to share. If we are short we are encouraged by knowledge of other people's willingness to help us. If you are thinking about sharing your abundance contact Don Porter Tuesday's at the church office from 9 a.m. till 12 Noon or by appointment. 859-324-5020 or [email protected].

CHRISTIAN FORMATION

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES IN NOVEMBER

Explorers Class (Room 120): A new 2-week course. led by Dr. Matthew Pierce! Here’s how he describes it:

“Islamic Spirituality: Inside and Out”: This two-week class will briefly explore the inner and outer aspects of Islamic spirituality. We'll discuss the differences between internal and external spiritual disciplines as we learn about some of the rich and fascinating ways Muslims have often approached a life of faithfulness. This class will give a fresh and personal encounter with one of the world's largest religions. Sunday Book Study (Room 122): The class resumes after taking a break to learn about the Reformation, and continues its discussion of Presbyterian Beliefs, by Donald McKim. Living Word (Chapel): This adult Bible study continues, reading the day’s lectionary each Sunday. November’s readings include selections from Joshua and Matthew. Adult Godly Play (Godly Play Suite): Hear and reflect on the Bible stories our children are learning. This month’s stories are “The Ark and the Tent,” “The Ark and The Temple,” and on the first Sunday of Advent, “The Holy Family.” PYC

Fall, as we know, is the time for hayrides and pumpkin

picking. So, with that as our goal, PYC headed out to

Devine’s Corn Maze on October 1. This has become an

annual event for the youth and everyone always has a

great time.

This year we were able to team up with the youth programs

from Lexington Avenue Baptist Church and Saints Peter

and Paul Catholic Church. We hope to continue to come

together to collaborate between these programs in the

future.

Future PYC Dates:

Dinner and Discussion Nights: November 5, 12, 19

Games and Grazing Night: November 26

High School Trip to Phelps: December 15-17

REFORMATION CLASS With the conclusion of the Reformation class, there are several resources available at the church for those who missed a particular session or those who want to read more about the topics and people covered. 1) The excellent DVD, ‘Rick Steves’ “Luther and the Reformation,” has been donated by Dr. John

Hankla. You can borrow it or go www.youtube.com to view it.

2) The four special issues of Christian History magazine have been given to the church library by Eric Mount so that they can be checked out and enjoyed. Their titles are:

A) “Luther leads the way” B) “The People’s Reformation: How religious upheaval birthed social revolution’” C) “Calvin, Councils, and Confessions: How the Church became the churches” D) “The Catholic Reformation: Art, piety and the fight for renewal” Each issue includes ten short articles and a Reformation timeline. 3) The handouts for the final session are also available.

Friends,

Casey and I would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to The Presbyterian Church of Danville for the care and support given us for our wedding. We are vividly aware of the blessing this congregation is in our lives, both individually and as a couple. Thank you, each of you, for accepting us into your faith family with warmth, love, and understanding.

Special thanks go out to the following people for making our day of celebration and joy particularly meaningful.

First is Sue Sullivan, who has played an important role in our lives both by acting as our realtor in the purchase of a home and by agreeing to coordinate the wedding ceremony for us. While we presented her with challenges, she overcame them and kept everything in line, as only Sue can. Thank you for your patience and your love, Sue.

Thank you, Lynn Preston, for being such a great resource to us and to this congregation.

Thanks to Liz and Bob Orndorff for opening up their home to the ladies of the wedding party, offering a comfortable space in which to ready themselves for the service. Your generous hospitality is deeply appreciated.

Communion was an important aspect of the service. The sacrament would not have been possible if not for the gracious help of several people. Joe Schultz provided invaluable advice on preparing the Meal, and blessed us by setting the Table. Amy Wilson and Don Porter stepped up, without hesitation, on short notice, to help Hannah and me serve. Thank you, Joe, Amy, and Don, for making possible our desire to gather celebrants around The Lord’s Table and feed them the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. Bless you for being broken bread and poured out wine for us.

THANK YOU!

Deborah Cullen provided her talents, and a considerable amount of time, sweat, and materials, for the flower arrangements. While she was not alone in this massive undertaking, her assistance contributed greatly to the finished look of bouquets, boutonnieres, and centerpieces. Thank you, Deb, for taking some of the beauty from your heart and infusing it into the arrangements.

Our pot-luck reception would not have been possible without Teresa Goggin, Diane Reed, Tim Shelton, and others of whom I am unaware. Teresa undertook, with masterful skill, the Herculean feat of setting buffet tables with the bounty of food brought for the occasion. Diane helped in the endeavor. Tim gave technical and logistical advice and support, handling our doubts, concerns, and desires with professionalism and that warm smile of his. Thank you for making the reception exactly the kind of “family meal” for which we had hoped.

Special and heartfelt thanks to those who stayed afterwards to clean up and square away the Fellowship Hall. Apologies to those I may miss, my ignorance of your deeds does not diminish our gratitude. Joe and Zora Schultz, and Don and Nancy Porter, thank you for sacrificing your evening to clean up, and giving us peace of mind as we began our short honeymoon that everything was in good hands. You humble us with your sacrificial service and love.

Finally, thanks to Zach Klobnack and Hannah McIntyre. It should come as no surprise that Zach was stellar on the organ, which he thoroughly worked out in his performance of the Widor Toccata. Hannah was everything we could have asked for in an officiant. Her ministry of Word and Sacrament made the service what we had intended, a celebration and worship of the God Who is Love, to Whom

all glory and gratitude belongs. Grace, Peace, and Love, Mark Tibbles

Thank you to everyone who donated goodies for the college care packages and to those who mailed them! We sent out 56 care packages this fall. They are always greatly appreciated! Thank you to everyone who filled a Journey Bag. This is such an important ministry and will make a big difference in the lives of the children who receive bags. The iMoms group will distribute the bags to Family Services in Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Jessamine, and Lincoln counties in November. Thank you to everyone who made the Halloween Social such a huge success! We had our largest crowd yet! Thank you to all the chili, scary dessert, and sandwich makers. And a big thank you to the Children’s Formation Committee and all others who helped plan, decorate, and clean up. Amy Wilson

LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, THREE KINGS!

The small village of Tres Reyes (Three Kings) in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico recently had a party to celebrate three years of successful operation and expansion of the Living Waters for the World water system in their community (installed by the Transylvania LWW team in 2014). Operator Dany Caamal and his family organized the event, held at Monte Horeb church, where the system lives. People from the community brought food (nothing like a good church pot-luck!), and there was music and laughter all around.

Dany explained that their water plant now provides safe water to the entire community, and to several surrounding communities as well, and their distribution has expanded rapidly. “In fact,” he said, “we are now the sole provider of safe water in this area, so we feel a great responsibility to keep things running smoothly. We hope to purchase a generator to ensure that when storms cause electrical failures lasting for days, we can still deliver this essential need.”

Happy Anniversary, Three Kings, and THANK YOU for partnering with us in this ministry!

ARTWORK

Thanks to a thoughtful gift from Jim and Shari Stewart, the church now has some very special artwork hanging in the assembly room of the Godly Play Suite on the second floor. Most of the pictures were done by students with special needs, two of them from our own congregation. Jim and Shari purchased the two pastels by Brandon Tucker at one of our Alternative Gift Markets here at church. Bruce Caudill’s acrylic painting “God’s World” hangs outside the door to the Assembly Room. It was purchased at a 2007 show for special needs children at the Community Arts Center called “The Hands That Touch the Heart.” The brightly colored picture done with markers is by Kansas and New York artist Jenny Unrein. Jenny was born with Williams Syndrome, a genetic condition characterized by developmental delays and learning disabilities. In spite of these difficulties, Jenny has been creating her whimsical and inspirational art since age 6, with the help of her stepmother. She is now an adult with a successful business selling her artwork at shows and online at www.jennyludesigns.com. This picture holds special significance for the Stewarts, who have a young granddaughter with Williams Syndrome. The largest piece hanging in the room is a poster sized photograph of an adult and a child holding hands. This picture was taken in 2012 by Lois Quilligan, during the prayer circle before a “Soup’s On Us” work session. Take a walk upstairs and view our newest church artwork on display. Each piece is labeled. We think you’ll be impressed by the talent shown, and by the generosity of Jim and Shari. Susan Jonas
