•Island in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.•Neighboring countries include Syria and Lebanon to the east, Israel to the southeast, Egypt to the south, and Greece to the north-west side.•Its geographical position, between Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa often attracted various conquerors.

•Population:1 000 000 •Cities: Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos, Larnaca, Famagusta, Kyrenia.• Area: 9, 251 Km²•Government: Presidential republic•Official language: Greek•Member of the European Union.•Currency: Euro (€)•The majority of the inhabitants are dealing with tourism.•Some of the inhabitants are occupied in agricultural and veterinarian activities.

Nicosia•It is the capital of the island.•Its population amounts to 500 000 inhabitants.•It is the seat of government, as well as the main business centre. •Nicosia is the only capital in the world which isstill divided.

Limassol•It is the second largest town. It is in the south of the island.•Its population amounts to 228 900 inhabitants.•It is Cyprus main commercial port and an important tourist resort.• It was one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus, named Amathounta.

Paphos•Population: 50 000 inhabitants.•It is considered to be a popular sea and a fast developing tourist resort.•The inhabitants are dealing with tourism and agriculture.

Larnaca•Population: 13 900 inhabitants.•It is the major, International Airport of the country. •It was one of the ancient kingdoms of Cyprus, named Kition.

Kyrenia Famagusta

•Two cities under Turkish occupation. •Before 1974, they were important tourists’ resortsdue to their ports and hotels.

•For about 36 years Cyprus faces a serious political problem. • On the 20th of July 1974, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied 37% of the island.•Cyprus government seeks a just solution to the Cyprus problem, with the support of the U.N. Organisation.

Pera Chorio – Nisou is in the suburbs of Nicosia.

It is situated almost in the center of Cyprus, close to Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol.

It is the only village in Cyprus that is consisted of two smaller villages.

It has 4000 inhabitants. The majority are occupied in Nicosia. 5% of the inhabitants are occupied in

agricultural veterinarian activities. 75% are specialized or unskilled

workers. 20% are employees in governmental

offices, schoolteachers, professors, doctors, pharmacists etc.

•Nisou used to be like an island, since it was surrounded by Yialias river.  While the river came impetuous from the mountains of Machaira, it was separated in the region of Nisou in two parts, which joined again to the East. Thus, the village took the name Nisou. • Pera Chorio owes its name in its location according to Nisou. It is the village (chorio) beyond (pera) the river.
