Introduction

In order to classify the severity of the thermal anomalies recorded, the temperature

difference between similar components was used. Please note that with electrical

equipment, the measured temperature in degrees centigrade is likely to vary based on

the electrical load (amperes) on the equipment at that time, the surrounding ambient

temperature, and it’s emissivity value. It was beyond the scope of this study to

determine operating load levels at the time of our thermographic analysis.

The following criteria have been used to determine the priority of the corrective

maintenance scheduling required, based upon the temperature difference of like

components.

Temperature Rise Reference & Fault Category Table:

Fault Category Temperature Rise Recommendations

1 >50°C Must be repaired immediately

2 25-50°C Repair at the earliest opportunity

3 8-25°C Investigate during next scheduled maintenance

4 0.5C – 8C Advisory

Decisions on the priority, timing, and importance of repairing the thermal anomalies

found in the equipment that was scanned, is the responsibility of the end user and/or

his designated maintenance contractor. It is recommended that not only the

temperature rise be considered, in determining the prioritization of repairing the

thermal anomalies found, but also the criticality of the equipment/process.

Causes of Temperature Rise:

1. Loose or rusted contact.

2. Defective Materials, such as slag Cracks, excess porosity etc presented in materials.

3. Defective elements (while in manufacturing).

4. Dust, moisture and lack of proper ventilation.

5. Under rated wiring or material.

6. Excess operating Conditions than recommendations by manufacturer. etc..

7. Improper Design and Changes made in original design with out proper knowledge .

8.Phase Unbalance ,harmonics and noise etc ..

General Guidelines for Electrical Connections Inspection & maintenance :

1. Terminate power supply to the respected Electrical element and make sure there is no supply after power

termination.

2. Visual Inspect the Contacts or terminations for burns, scaling and loose contact etc.

3. Verify the element; it is as per the standard use like under rated, not as per the design or not as per the

manufacturer guidelines etc.

4. Remove the connection and clean with the Electrical contact cleaner and tighten well.

5. Verify the Current quality and Thermal signature after corrections made.

Recommended Practice : 1. Install and operate the Electrical equipments and its auxiliaries as per manufacturer guidelines.

2. Maintain proper ventilation, Heat sinks and House keeping.

3. Verify the product quality machine required while installation or change of elements.

4. Identify and monitor the electrical element life span and replace.

5. Make sure and Monitor Power Quality .
