INTRODUCTION

The Directory of Library and Information Science Schools is a simple online database that indexes and provides access to contact information of all Library and Information Science schools in Nigeria It contains names of these schools with their respective contacts searchable by name of school officialrsquos name region and so on

The Librariansrsquo Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) has packaged this online Directory of Library and Information Science Schools as part of efforts to enhance and improve communication in the library and information science community The Directory seeks to provide quick and easy access to relevant library related information made available within and outside the library community

LRCN was established by Act 12 of 1995 (CAP L 13 LFN 2004) as a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education to regulate and promote the practice of librarianship in Nigeria The mandate of the Council include

- Determining who librarians are - Determining what standards of knowledge and skill are to be attained by persons

seeking to become registered as librarians and reviewing those standards from time to time

- Securing the establishment and maintenance of a register of persons entitled to practice the profession and the publication from time to time of the lists of such persons

- Setting and maintaining standards for all categories of libraries - Accrediting library school programmes and - Maintaining discipline within the profession in accordance with the LRCN Act

As a statutory regulatory body LRCN promotes quality assurance professionalism and standards through the registration and certification of librarians The Council has been fully involved in the registration and certification of librarians regulation of conduct among members organization of capacity building programmes drafting of policies and standards and accreditation of library school programmes among others

In its quest to professionalize librarianship contribute to national growth development and in fulfillment of its mandate the Council has in collaboration with the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) collated and published names and contact details of all 23 library schools authorized to run programmes in library and information science and produce graduates in the field of library and information science in Nigeria This publication seeks to aid the dissemination of accurate information about library schools in Nigeria Any school not listed in this publication has not been approved to produce graduates of library science in Nigeria by the National Universities Commission as at 2015

With this publication organizations researchers students institutions individuals and other stakeholders will be better informed about the status of library and information science

programmes in Nigeria The publication is recommended as a reliable source for researchers and a channel for direct inquiries and feedbacks Through this directory a strong link will be created between the library library schools and users

Names of approved schools are listed in alphabetical order together with postal addresses phone numbers and email addresses The directory exists in hard copy and electronic form

Employers of labour are therefore advised to ensure that they employ graduates from the programmes listed in this publication
