Welcome to EYE, our annual end of year exhibition graduate book, that showcases the creative output of Edinburgh College’s eight specialist Higher Education diplomas from the School of Art and Design.

We have one of the largest art schools of its kind in the UK, with over 700 students, and a strong reputation for progressing students onto both degree level study and employment. This year, students have presented their final work in exhibitions and industry nights across Edinburgh in venues such as Summerhall, Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and within the studios at our Granton campus.

Our links with industry and art colleges across the UK are key in helping us to achieve our aim of creating a challenging curriculum for our students, enabling them to stretch, test and develop their own creativity, to positively influence the world around them. I believe the end of

year exhibitions across all levels and specialisms exemplify this well.

Our staff have had an exciting year, having presented at both the UAL Awarding Body Conference in London, and at the National Society for Education in Art and Design event at the National Gallery of Scotland. Staff have also led study trips to Europe, and have worked on a wide range of live projects with external partners including the G+V Hotel, Miller Homes, Highland Park, and City of Edinburgh secondary schools. These projects give students the invaluable ‘gold dust’ of real-life working experience which often leads on to placements, internships and employment.

The School of Art and Design has also launched its Schools Inspire Project and Student Ambassadors scheme. Ambassadors have worked directly with S3 pupils across the city, and 20 art teachers attended a CPD event at our Granton campus. The project is

an initiative promoting collaboration between the School of Art and Design and Secondary Education in Scotland, funded by Threebrand, the Edinburgh College Development Trust and the Scottish Government’s Developing the Young Workforce. With employment in the creative industries rising at three times the national average, the Inspire Project will ensure Edinburgh College is at the forefront to provide Scotland with future creatives.

Many thanks to our sponsors The Edinburgh Art Shop, Turners Art Supplies, Betta and Jim Adams, and our mentors, industry partners, and the Edinburgh College Development Trust for supporting us once again this year.

And finally, to our diploma students, keep creating, keep focused, embrace it all, and keep in touch.

Richard (born in Edinburgh, 1930) is an artist and promoter of the visual and performing arts. He has been one of Scotland’s most influential advocates for contemporary art through his work at the Richard Demarco Gallery and the Demarco European Art Foundation, as well as his professorship at Kingston University in London.

His contributions to contemporary art internationally have been recognised on numerous occasions, receiving the Polish Gold Order of Merit, the Cavaliere della Repubblica d’Italia, the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres de France and the Commander of the British Empire.

Richard has been a regular supporter of the Art and Design team at Edinburgh College over many years. In 2009, part of the Demarco Archive was exhibited within the college alongside staff and student work. This was a great opportunity to use the Archive as a learning resource within the college.

In 2016 Richard was honoured with the role of patron of the Edinburgh College Development Trust, having formally been a trustee. The Development Trust, the college’s own charity, supports students to develop greater employability and life skills, as well as positive mental wellbeing. In this role Richard was able to uphold

the high standard of our staff and student work and the professionalism of the end of year exhibitions to secure our funding from the Development Trust in 2015 and again in 2017.

We thank him for his role as a trustee and latterly as patron, presenting the Richard Demarco award for Art and Design at the FE Prize Giving, for introducing our guest speaker Donald, and for being one of Edinburgh College’s, and the arts, greatest champions.

Throughout the last two years I have spent a great deal of my time working on my style and technique. I have worked on finding my own style, trying to master others, learning what my strengths and weaknesses are, and what makes me tick.

This course has been a game of progression and has made me into a better artist. It has made me want to push my digital painting and concept art and my experience has allowed me to make those concepts into reality. I have used a multi-tude of software including Zbrush, Maya and many other great programs.

My plans for the next year extend to getting more experience in the creative industries, to seeing more of the world. I will then go on to study further to learn more skills and develop my art to a professional level.

I mostly work in traditional mediums, primarily pen and ink cartoons. Over the past 2 years, I have also branched out into modern animation, working in both 2D and 3D, including special effects, character design and 3D modelling.

As well as the practical side of things, I am also interested in the history of animation and cartooning and enjoy researching this in my own time. My inspirations are cartoonists whose work I enjoy, such as

Tove Jansson and Charles Addams, as I admire thier ability to tell a story or joke in simply a few frames or panels. I strive to achieve these things in my own work.

Going forward I hope to put my skills to work in a practical environment, particulary in an animation or cartooning setting. I am looking into the production side of things either as part of a company or as a freelance artist.

Having dabbled in 3D modelling as a serious pastime, I decided to attend an interview for a 3D Art placement. I was, however, advised to take a course in order to build on my skills to pursue a career in the industry.

During the course I have worked on various projects, including short 3D animations involving an aging tortoise for the Vintage Vibes Charity, a 3D animation based on a modernised take on King Arthur and a

group animation based on a monster with self confidence issues.

My main objective is to gain enough skills to allow me to pursue employment within the animation and/or games industry after my course is complete. My work involves 3D modelling and animation using Maya and Blender, special effects and editing using After Effects, and the production of storyboards, concept art and animatics via Photoshop.

Art to me is something that allows you to express yourself through what you do, and that can be in any form.

My love for art started when I was younger, when I would draw and paint whenever I could. As I got older, I knew I wanted to work for a major animation company, such as Disney, where I could create characters.

From school to college I have taken a lot of steps to get where I want to be. This year in college has taught me so much, for example, I now know how to use programs such as Maya. I am so grateful for the experience. From now I will focus on being the best animator I can be. I just need to see what the future holds for me now.

I moved to Edinburgh from Hungary in 2009 to study filmmaking and photography. However, throughout my life animation films fascinated me, so I decided to study in this course at Edinburgh College. During my studies here I became sure that animation is my real niche.

My passion is visual storytelling. From my experience, animation has the most creative and unlimited toolset to create a narrative and convey emotions. This course provided me with the knowledge and skill

set to be able to produce 2D/3D animations and special effects. I enjoy character design, modelling, rigging, texturing and animating. I have experience in editing, sound design and special effects as well. I mainly work in Photoshop, Maya, and After Effects for the different parts of the animation process.

After my studies I plan to become a freelance animator or find work in a studio. In the future, I hope to direct my own animated feature.

Everything started with a passion for stop-motion animation, so before this course I hardly knew how to use any software. Thanks to the course I have learned so much, and now I can animate in 2D and 3D. I gained more confidence about my skills and developed new ones.

My animation approach is mostly focused on 2D using software like Photoshop to create my designs and

After Effects to produce work as motion graphic or character animation. I am also able to work in 3D with Autodesk Maya focusing on UV, texturing and animation. I have been offered a place at DJCAD in Dundee for second year. It’s a great opportunity for me to learn much more about animation, to develop and perfect my style. One day I hope to fulfil my dream and work as an animator at the Aardman studio.

Since a young age I have wanted to do something creative. I found that animation was what I was looking for. The HNC/HND course has helped me in developing my abilities and extending my creativity to a new level. I have only one ambition which is to do something I enjoy through being

creative and having the ability to express myself. I believe in hard work to achieve my goals, through my commitment to the things I do and learn.

This year I have three offers from universities and hopefully after my studies I will find a job in the industry.

me. Seeing the final product drives me to go onto further education and gain further experience.

My plans are to move to further education in university and continue in the field of animation. The university that would be the best option for me is Glasgow Caledonian to study 3D Animation and Visualisation. After university I hope to get a job to start gaining experience and see where that takes me.

Whilst I was studying Architecture in Spain, I realised what I really want to become was a 3D artist. In 2014, I moved to Scotland and shortly after began my studies at Edinburgh College. Having finished the course this year, I am now ready to get into the industry.

I’m mostly focused on hard surface modelling, but during the course I have learned to work in other areas. These include texturing, organic modelling, animation and rendering, among others. My top used programs are Maya, Photoshop and ZBrush, and I’m always willing to learn new software.

Going forward, I aim to work in an architectural or engineering environment, making virtual visualisations. I am also looking into the game industry, designing and modelling props and environments.

The idea of animation has always fascinated me; the way one person can single handedly craft a living, breathing piece of art. To push so much love and passion into their work and truly bring it to life, life is real magic.

For me, this is why it was so exciting to get the opportunity to study 3D animation at Edinburgh College. I have been given the opportunity to work

alongside incredibly creative individuals all the while being taught the fundamentals of art and animation by a lecturer who truly pushed you to succeed. I very much enjoy story-boarding and narrative building alongside creating characters and a world for them using programs like Maya.

Personally I love 2D animation, but I do love modelling and animating in 3D, especially characters. I will go on to study further in this field at Glasgow Caledonian University and I am very excited to see where life will take me.

Visual effects and 2D animation are my main areas of my interest. Over the past two years my experience and skill level has improved greatly, and I now feel confident in these fields.

My desire for next year is to continue this study at University and hopefully allow me a step closer to be qualified animator or visual effect artist.

I am a passionate, hard-working designer. What excites me most about interior design is the process, taking what could be a random idea, shape, or everyday object and transforming it in many ways. I am able to explore every possible option, even if it takes me out of my comfort zone, in order to get the final result.

Studying the HND over the last two years has improved my skills and imagination as a designer, inspired by urban art, architecture, film and media. I love to take

My favourite thing about Interior Design is that you could give a floor plan to over 30 students and not one individual will come back with the same design – whereas if I was to study maths everyone would come back with the same answer. This is why I love design, it’s all about being creative and letting your imagination run wild.

As of September this year I will be attending Heriot-Watt University to complete my degree in Interior Architecture and I look forward to developing my skills further.

As of September, I will be moving down to Newcastle for 2 years as I have been offered an unconditional into 2nd year from Northumbria University. My long-term ambition is to move to Dubai and get a job within the creative sector.

Interior Design for me personally is not just about ‘what looks good here’ or ‘that colour works well there’. It is not all about picking the newest, most stylish sofa from the high street. I also don’t believe that those with the most money have the nicest houses. What I love about interior design is the ability to take something old and make it new again. Bringing the life out of something that was once old and unused, so that when people walk into a room they will notice that chest of drawers that was once invisible.

Small objects inspire me every day and I never stop looking at the detail of furniture.

I did not realise this when I first started this course, but after studying my 3 years at Edinburgh College, I have realised that interior design is nothing more than a beautiful art.

The way our space is designed affects how we live, work, play and even heal. Throughout designing process I am trying to understand people’s behaviour to create functional spaces within a building. I always incorporate innovative ideas and new technology.

My inspiration comes from large variety of sources like nature, culture, history, music or travel. I do not have a favourite home decor theme. I like to play with different styles to create original and personal space according to the client’s taste.

I wanted to create tranquil and relaxing space, contemporary butwith luxury feeling. I chose light blue color palete to expand space visually. Sofa and armchairs are raised on legs to create a sense of light and space. Two largest pices of furniture sofa and chest of drawers are in similar color as color of the walls, will blend in which will widen the space. I decided to place two pices of armchairs at an angle to make a room look bigger.

Miller Homes are supporting Habitat for Humanity a charity who build homes all over the world for people who can not afford home.As a part of that commitment Miller Homes had build houses in Malawi. Influenced by this event I decided to incorporate an african theme in the room. I used shapes and textures inspired by africa. Pendant ceiling lights reflects an exotic african flower and side tablean afrcan drum. Table lamp with twin lamp holder and crossed horn base and gold flame metal vase.

After completing the HND Course at Edinburgh College I want to start my professional career to help people to live in comfortable, functional and attractive homes. I would like to work for a company as it would give me the opportunity to exchange ideas and knowledge. However, I would like to have the opportunity to develop leadership responsibilities and someday become self-employed.

I find the whole world of interior design attractive and intriguing because it is full of interesting colors, shapes, textures and because of the way it allows me to express my feelings through those forms.

I like how you never stop learning in design; there is no limit to knowledge as there isn’t for our imagination.

I am now completing an HND course and I will be continuing my studies at the at Heriot-Watt University. I want to get an Honors degree and perhaps do my masters with the same university.

Aesthetics and creativity have always been an inseparable part of my everyday life. Since an early age, I have had a peculiar draw towards interiors and out of ordinary spaces. with solid timeless foundations, I have discovered how much more there is to the subject of interior design.

Alongside studying at Edinburgh College I was also doing an Association of Masters Upholsters Diploma. I do find furniture restoration very therapeutic and it is something I really enjoy doing in my spare time. However, in the future, I would like to get more into the design side of furniture. It has been a very demanding three years but at this point it is safe to say it was all absolutely worth it. In September I will be joining 3rd year students at The Glasgow School of Art and I couldn’t be happier.

Christina LeiskHND 3D DESIGN:INTERIOR DESIGN

The last 3 years studying interior design I have developed a great understanding into 3D awareness. This has given me confidence in my use of space, colour, light and texture. My evaluation skills are critical yet constructive allowing each project to be better than the last. My goal and ambition is to have one of my creations turned into a physical entity. Design is everywhere. I am curious of how objects work, what makes them eye-catching and how they are

designed. When I go into a room, I find that I am analysing a lot of the detail without even intending to. For that reason I know my passion will always be within design.

I am looking forward to taking my skills to degree level, to further my knowledge and understanding, and to dive deeper into the world of design. After all, we are remembered by what we leave behind.

How would I describe my work? Creative, adventurous, well thought-out fun!

In my work, I like to push the boundaries and challenge myself. I constantly aim at improving my skills and developing my own style.

I particularly enjoy using Photoshop and Illustrator in my design practice. Knowledge and experience in fine art, which I gained in the past, is my biggest asset and main source of inspiration. I am

not devoted to one specific trend in interior design. I would rather say that my work is imbued with my personality and temporary fascinations.

The last two years of the course have given me the time and opportunity to grow and systematise my work. After the course ends, I am going to continue my adventure with interior design, but also I’m planning to work on my own series of furniture.

I believe that I was very young going into this course, however I have grown as both a person and a designer.

When I tell people that I study interior design I tend to get the usual response: “you pick the couches that go in peoples houses, right?”. I used to think that interior design was all about that, too. However,

over my two years at Edinburgh College, I have realised it is all about the space you have to work with, and what you do with that space is how you make it your own.

I am inspired by vintage things, giving the old a new life again and I show this through my work and in my own home.

When I decided to take this course, I was at a point in my life looking to expand my creative skills. It is a course designed specifically to work the imagination and to improve day by day your knowledge about space. My inspiration comes mostly from other designers, nature, cultures, movies and from my travels. These two years of studying interior design has dramatically improved my creative side, not only learning to draw better but also using new techniques such as 3D softwares, like Vectorworks, SketchUp or Vray.

I first gained interest in interior design at a young age. Growing up in communist Poland, mass production was the thing, and almost everyone owned the same furniture meaning you had to put a lot of thought into making your room unique. All my designs have the same sentiment: make people happy. Without that, even the most extravagant design won’t work. My ideology is always try to bring something different and new to each design, but in the times of Pinterest this is no easy task.

Once I have completed my HND at Edinburgh College, I want to start my professional career with an internship in which I can expand my experience and my knowledge, and finally be able to dedicate myself professionally to the field of interior design.

The last two years helped me understand that it’s not just about being original and sophisticated, but to make sure you apply your knowledge to make each design behave in a desirable way.

My next step is to study for a further two years at Heriot-Watt University to improve and develop my skills as a designer.

Interior design is a brilliant balance of creativity and taking things back basics, making sketchbooks to show creative development an important factor.

I found that first making a model, and then adding to it through Photoshop, was effective in creating atmosphere as the natural shadows (which would be found in the space) were already there in the model.

Through this course I have learned the importance of not rushing into final ideas or concepts, but first working through the basics and figuring out the simple things.

I will not be continuing onto university yet due to an unforeseen health problem. My next steps are to volunteer at charity shops and to try out some creative skills in upholstery, pottery and mosaic art. I am fascinated by the psychological effects that a space can have on us. To me, me being an interior designer is about understanding human behavior and translating our knowledge into creative, empathetic designs. I love the impact design has on our mood and how the intricate details of a design can change our life.

For me, the starting point of every project begins by examining what is happening around me, either in wider society or within my personal life. Using cheap and accessible materials such as found wood and leftover paint, my work often focuses on subjects such as power, disillusionment, domestic life and politics. Language plays a large part within my work and I often aim for it to be confrontational and at times challenging for the viewer.

Over the last two years I have studied the Contemporary Art Practice course and it has been an integral part of my growth as an artist. I would highly recommend it for those interested in conceptual art. Following on from this I will be moving to Dundee to undertake a degree in Art & Philosophy at DJCAD Dundee University.

I mainly get ideas for my work through my own understanding of how society as a collective interacts and performs and how we as individuals also interact with others and learn from the world around us. The theatrics of drag, other facets of queer culture, human understanding and awareness of emotions, trends and human psychology, inspire me the most in my work. I’m inspired by the absurdity, intelligence and power the human mind has to offer.

The mediums of my work is primarily digital media such as film and photography, I’ve always loved the two and I find that this is a medium that works most successfully with the context of my work.

Following my time studying Contemporary Art Practice, I will hopefully be going on to study Fine Arts with The University of Cumbria in Carlisle, yet I hope to continue creating video work in the future.georgiamckinnacap.tumblr.com

Growing up in the countryside in Ireland with a love for painting, it was inevitable I would go on to study art. With a very formal, and some would say “old fashioned” take on art, my world would be turned upside down upon starting CAP. As I struggled to come to terms with conceptualism, my work began to feel like someone elses. With an Aristotelian perception of the functions of art, my work needed to change, but still have a part of me in it. Fight them or join them, I chose the latter.

Contemporary art has taught me so much about the world around me, about limitations that don’t exist within a truly open artistic open mind. My work is mainly predominantly 2D, with usually an ambiguous quality. However, I always keep form and a structural line within, layers and room for light.

I’ve found this an enjoyable way to work and intend to practice more in this way when I begin my studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art next year.

I have enjoyed my last three years at Edinburgh College studying Textiles. I have gained a lot of experience within the subject and learned a wide variety of skills and techniques. Throughout the HND I have enjoyed developing my skills as a printer and being able to experiment with other mediums such as embroidery and embellish-ment. I have been heavily inspired by Surrealism and large scale Botanicals, I feel this is where my strongest work was produced. My style of work is always very vibrant as I like to use a lot of colour. I love to create busy and exciting textiles particularly for fashion.

Next year I plan to continue my studies in Textiles at He-riot-Watt University. I feel this is a great achievement for myself and opportunity to further my skills and expand my knowledge. I can’t wait to start my new adventure.

I have been at Edinburgh College for three years, starting my journey from a BTEC level 2 Art and Design (Fashion and Textiles), I went on to do an HND in textiles. I feel that the skills I have developed throughout my time in college gave me the ability and confidence to produce a vast variety of pieces based on different inspirations, such as surrealism, pop-art, architecture and nature.

Using techniques, like embroidery, screen printing, heat printing and digital printing, supporting those techniques with tools as real life painting, different media painting, Photoshop and others, to create my pieces. My next step is to Heriot-Watt University where I will go into the 3rd year to study Design for Textiles (Fashion, Interior and Art) BA Hons. My intention is to finish my education doing a PhD related with the different applications of textiles technology.

From making my way through a printmaking course and then a textiles course I have been really able to utilise my skills and love of photography. My featured work comes from my first year of HND Textiles whilst I was designing a waistcoat for the bespoke tailors, Stewart Christie & Co. I was aiming to create a more feminine silhouette for the waistcoat and took this image as inspiration for the desired final look of the garment’s drape.

My photos have always been a core sense of inspiration in the development of all of my projects and it is this passion as well as an interest in contemporary culture that has lead me to accept a place at Heriot-Watt University to study Fashion Communication in the coming year.

I have studied textiles for 3 years at Edinburgh College starting with a BTEC course and progressing onto HND. Although it was stressful at times, I have loved every minute of my experience. I have accomplished much more than I expected and gained many skills that I will carry forward to my career. It has opened my eyes to the world of fashion/textiles and has enabled me to transfer this knowledge to my job in fashion.

I have worked for Kurt Geiger for 2 years and following graduation, I will step into a supervisor role. Throughout my time at KG, I have gained more confidence in selling the products due to my enhanced knowledge from the course. Being a graduate of HND textiles has given me the opportunity to do a visual merchandising internship at Kurt Geiger’s headquarters in London next year. I am thankful to the college for a great experience and I feel prepared and confident about my future.

Over the past three years at Edinburgh College I have discovered that my best projects are based on geometrical shapes. One of my absolute favourite printing technique is using stencils. It allows me to create pieces that are unique and can’t ever be repeated again in the same way. My main inspirations come from fabrics, books and paper; various textures are in the heart of all my passions.

Next year I will continue my education at the second year of Edinburgh College of Art studying fashion. My future aspiration is to create textile for fashion industry and at the moment I am really looking forward to all the challenges and new experiences the future has to offer.

I am a creative with passion for design. I pull my inspiration from day to day occurrences, simple images which I am able to sketch, paint and print to create patterns. My work is mostly abstract and I enjoy playing with silhouettes to create the unexpected.

My journey so far has only just started. After finishing my studies in Edinburgh, I will be moving to London to study Textile Design at Central Saint Martins, this will give me the education and foothold I need to establish myself as a credible textile designer.

From my beginnings in BTEC Art and Design through to the end of my HND, I strived to find the difference in every brief I received. I pushed, pulled and contorted every brief to achieve brilliant results but stay perfectly within context. This approach was openly encouraged by a great lecturing team within the A&D department.

Winning the award for Academic Excellence in BTEC gave me the confidence to tackle HND Textiles and I also recently won a live project set by the G&V Hotel to create a surrealist themed light shade. My experiences and learning at Edinburgh College have given me the skills to move forward with a steadfast determination to grow as a designer, inventor and person.

In September I will continue my journey studying a BA in Textile Design at Glasgow School of Art from 2nd year entry.

I am interested in the variety of textile techniques and traditions of cultures around the world. As a travel enthusiast, I like to take inspiration from my experiences in different countries. Last year, I spent two weeks travelling in China, where I was inspired by the pagodas, palaces and temples as well as the landscape and flora of the country. The many photos I took on my trip formed the basis of the research for my final project.

Throughout my HND, I have expanded my drawing abilities by learning new ways to look at subject matter, which I think has resulted in more varied and interesting work. As well as new creative skills, I have learned the basics in several textile techniques, which I look forward to developing further when I enter 2nd year of BA Textile Design at Glasgow School of Art in September.

I have been at Edinburgh College for three years now, where I have learned a variety of skills and techniques which have allowed me to develop a strong and confident style of work.

Every year I have seen my work go from strength to strength with my ability to adapt to the wide variety of projects and briefs we were given, with each one presenting new and exciting challenges.

I plan to carry on growing within the field of textiles at Glasgow School of Art next year where I will start in second year. I hope to further my style as a developing textile designer. I intend to build on my skill set and create a full and diverse range of work, so that by the time I have come to the end of my course I am able to hopefully, apply myself as a full-time independent designer.

I have studied textiles for the last four years at Edinburgh College and it has been a challege for me, however each year I gained more confidence and my work got stronger and I learned more skills that I will now know for the rest of my life.

I have now developed my own style of work and intend on focusing on my own style of work after college.

I moved onto the graphic design course at Edinburgh College after studying a general art and design course. After getting to dip my toe into many different sections of art and design I found myself mostly drawn towards illustration and graphic design. Also gained a growing interest in typography which swayed me to study graphic design.

After starting the course at edinburgh I thoroughly enjoyed the fact we focused primarily on conceptual work whilst gaining the practical skills required for real-world work.

For my next steps I am hoping to maybe do a few more placements within agencies to get a good feel for the pace and work style for working as a graphic designer.

Ever since I was young I’ve loved creating. At school, art was one of the few subjects I enjoyed and knew it would always be a possible career for me. After a few years of working as a chef, I decided that I needed a change and got a placement at Family where I quickly fell in love with being a Graphic Designer. Studying at Edinburgh College only confirmed for me that this is what I want to do, finding my strengths in my concepts and copywriting.

After I graduate I will be looking for a job that helps me continue to expand my knowledge, as I love to learn and love the ever changing nature of Graphic Design; the clients, the briefs, the software, and the nature of design itself. I also love how design can change the world, or at very least, our perceptions of it.

I have a passion for making things visually pleasing, my true love lying with digital and editorial pieces. I would best describe myself as a minimalist, typography enthusiast with big ideas.

I love to travel as I find every holiday or short break deeply inspires my work. After visiting both Barcelona and Berlin my style has become a lot more vibrant which is clearly reflected in my self-branding, as is the fact that I’m a great lover of the Swiss style and strongly believe that I have achieved true perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but nothing to take away.

I currently have a lot of freelance work coming my way but don’t plan on starting my own business until I have years of industry experience, therefore after graduating I’m hoping to be offered an internship or a graphic designer position in Edinburgh, either in-house or agency.

I studied because I wanted to become a designer and understand the method. Soon in the real life, I will learn why something working and some other will not.

My plan is to find an internship or job and do freelance on the side. It might be anywhere in the UK, I would prefer in a big town though.

Earlier this year we were briefed to pick three values we have, representing our work and personality. Although a monumental challenge, I distilled mine to: ‘Be flexible, do good and laugh at life.’ I aimed for my personal branding to reflect this as I find these values also reflect my creative process. I enjoy the research aspect and producing unique insights that make strong foundations for my projects.

The project pictured is an element from my submission to the YCN Student Awards. The brief was from the Royal Opera House who are trying to get more culturally engaged young people to see ballet. The challenge itself was about changing perceptions.

People have many misconceptions about ballet, and why it is not for them. One of them is that they don’t understand it. Because ballet deals with the many themes of human emotion, the truth is that everyone can understand it - because we all understand ‘body language’...

And so in order to inform people of what ballet is about, I just made it obvious by spelling it out using lettering I created from the forms of ballet dancers.I do a lot of research for my projects and try to find the simplest solution I can. I think the truth is always the simplest way to get a point across.

Although I enjoy working with print, inspired by Alan Kitching and Saul Steinberg, I am excited to explore new perspectives that digital design brings, such as video, app and web design, as well as 3D printing. Following the graduation show, I have a series of exciting work placements: Pocket Rocket Creative (Sterling) Whitespace (Edinburgh) & Edrington (Glasgow). After that, I hope to find employment at a creative agency based in Scotland.

As I grew older I became incredibly interested in music and skateboard culture and, as a result, I started designing skateboards and album covers as a bit of a hobby. World Meat Free Day is organised every year to raise awareness of the benefits of eating less meat for a balanced diet that’s better for the planet and for our food systems. The campaign aim to reach as many people as possible all around the globe. I realised that I am not going to make everyone vegetarian in one day, but I can ask people to take a break from eating meat and in doing so give the planet and the animals a break too.

Design has the power of always being different in every project, never being repetitive and constantly requires you to expand your own culture and to research ideas, learn something new every day. This time next year I hope to be using everything I learned so far and keep expanding this knowledge as a professional.

The challenge was to re-establish an early 1900s modernist arts magazine titled Blast, which only ran for two issues. As part of the editorial design brief, I had to choose a subject which I personally find interesting and consider how typography, photography and layout should be used and presented throughout the publication.

As somebody who is fascinated by architecture, I eventually decided to focus on the Brutalist movement. With the raw use of concrete, brutalist architecture heavily contrasts from the more traditional and decorative buildings. I figured that with the all the twists and turns and different faces of brutalism, it would be interesting how that could appear translated over to typography and layout. By using images of a few brutalist buildings to arrange the titles and body text to mirror that image, I have experimented and reimagined how a publication can be spread out and structured on the page to give a sense of the content.

I am primarily interested in cartooning and portraiture, as I am keen to capture personalities and depict characterization above all else. I am adaptable in terms of style, although I tend to favor clean line drawings, a muted colour palette, and large areas of empty space. My process usually involves traditional methods, before finalizing the images digitally. My work is informed by a love of classic comic strips, and early 20th century design. I have a contemporary aesthetic, yet my work implies a nostalgic feeling. I have recently collaborated with a writer on a self-published picture book, which has inspired me to become more involved with print media. Upon leaving Edinburgh College, I will be furthering my illustration studies at the University of Dundee whilst pursuing my own publishing ventures and freelance commissions.

I have always loved making things and throughout my adult life have used making art as a means of escaping the sadness brought on by one miserable job or another. Then, even though to many I was old enough to know better, I decided to jack it all in and try to make this my real life.

I favour traditional techniques, with pen and ink being my favourite, but I have come to really love using digital tools too. I even pay for Photoshop.

My current plan is to make lots of things, sell them, and repeat the process till I die.

I enjoy working in watercolour and ink but I now incorporate mixed media, collage and sometimes monoprint into my illustrations since I have picked up new techniques whilst studying. There is so much scope in illustration and I have enjoyed these last two years learning new aspects to the subject.

I like to work on editorial projects and am looking to advance my digital skills in photoshop and InDesign. I’m inspired by publications such as Kinfolk and Cereal magazine, Quentin Blake’s loose drawings, CY Twombly’s mark making and urban sketching groups from my time living between Edinburgh and Spain.

Illustration offers a fresh and exciting portrayal to clients which is why I would like to work in a creative field with magazines or design packaging, but I’m open to a variety of projects and I’m intrigued to see where my work suits and what direction it could take me whether that be in the UK or abroad.

My primary aim as an illustrator is to work with publishers on editorial pieces and with books. I love to read and getting to see my own work combined with writers on a professional level would make me incredibly happy. I am hugely influenced by traditional pen and ink illustrators and nature.I use a combination of manually made drawings and textures, with digital colours and editing to create my work.

I have a tendency to lean towards bright colours within my illustrations, as I like the way they contrast with the black line work that I use.

Most of the subjects in my solo work involve animals and portraits. I like the variety of proportions you get within animal features and spend far too long sketching them.Next year I hope to start writing and publishing my own children’s books.

In my illustrations I like to think that I give more relevance to the idea and concept and I have more flexibility with my style. I believe humour is the best way to communicate so I try to use it as much as I can. I try to experiment with media but working digitally gives me more flexibility and allows me to work faster for any possible commission.

Next year I will continue my studies at degree level Communication Design at Glasgow School of Art.

Kirsty JohnstonHND VISUAL COMMUNICATION: ILLUSTRATION

I embrace the process of mark making, which often leads me to work mixed media as it allows me to create bold and striking images whilst still maintaining loose, expressive drawings. I love to push the boundaries of how illustration and collage can work in the medium of moving image and my interest in design as a whole often leads me to be inspired by and incorporate aspects of other specialisms within my illustrations.

I am vastly inspired by the DADA movement, specifically Hannah Höch. I enjoy working collaboratively with different specialisms such as photographers and sound designers as I find it interesting when interpretations merge together and creative inputs consolidate into one.

I am happy to be continuing my studies in illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and am excited to experiment with my ideas and move forward in my practice. [email protected]

In my artwork, I’ve always enjoyed using traditional media such as pen, ink, watercolour, collage and occasionally lino and mono printing. The HND course has also introduced me to the wonders of Photoshop, which I have now found to be an essential tool in creating my final images. My work is quite diverse, as I love to experiment with lots of different styles and techniques.

Other illustrators and designers also constantly inspire me; at the moment I love the simple, yet highly effective illustrations of Christian Robinson, Marc Martin and Jon Klassen who I feel have influenced my most recent work.

After I finish the course, I’m aiming to work towards becoming a freelance illustrator while also pursuing my interest in art education and community art projects. If you are interested in my work, please feel free to contact me!

In my art, I like to visualise composition and think about aesthetics as these are important to me. Mark making is my favourite thing to do and being as bold and abstract as possible with it gives me immense joy. I enjoy transferring my illustrations onto digital platforms as well because it helps me to expand the variety of changes I can make.

Cy Twombly is a great inspiration to me and will continue to be. I aim to be as honest and open with my art as much as possible and to capture the transience of life in my art is my goal.

In the near future, I strive to develop a stronger style and to practice contentment within my journey towards a more creative and compassionate lifestyle. I also look forward to collaborating with artistic friends!

Sammi RauschHND VISUAL COMMUNICATION: ILLUSTRATION

I enjoy the practice of both traditional and digital illustration equally. I have found that mixing the two has resulted in a very feminine, clean and linear style in which is constantly developing. I enjoy the use of composition and colour in my illustrations and these are the two most inspiring things to me. They have definitely become the focal points in my work.

In the future, my primary objective is to develop my style and portfolio to a higher standard as I work towards being a freelance illustrator and designer. I look forward to the future projects that I will be working on.

In my Illustrations I focus on a strong idea, composition and simplicity. I aim for a clear visual of powerful concept. I start off every project with deep research. I find it important to get to know the topic that I’m going to be working on from cover to cover. That is when I can start the brainstorming stage.

In my work I always pay attention to details because I always appreciate them in someone else’s work. It shows that all elements of the project are treated with the same importance and have a reason to be there. For the next three years I’m going to continue studying at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and also try to get some freelance commissions. Besides that, I want to realize some personal projects and collaborate with some of my like-minded friends.

My major goal when it comes to designing an Illustration is to be able to add a part of me into the piece. My preparation process has always been quite quick. I try to collect what I’ve been exercising all my life since I was a kid. Nevertheless, I try to orientate all this practice to the task I am involved with. The style I’ve been developing all those years may look rough and busy but it is also my objective to simplify the end result through my design process.

My next year’s objective is to set myself up as a freelance illustrator while keep pushing myself on my technical skills in order to find myself with more options and be a more versatile artist.

I made Edinburgh my home four years ago and since then, I have been growing as an illustrator. I enjoy working with different techniques, although, watercolour is one of my favourites. My digital skills have improved immensely in the last two years, I have achieved a distinctive level of sophistication in my work I did not have before.

I also like to create funny characters and place them in real environments. My characters are distinctive not only for their style but also for the colours I normally use, I am a big fan of pastels.

I always looks to challenge myself so, next year, I will move on to Edinburgh College of Art to study animation.

My favoured type of work is editorial, as it allows me to provide either information or narrative, depending on the needs of the client.

I am greatly influenced by expressive paintings and reportage illustration, with loose mark-making and quick interpretations of subjects giving a sense of energy and life to a drawing.

Working mainly using traditional media, I consider colour, composition and contrast before creating finished works which I finesse in Adobe Photoshop.

The majority of my personal work stems from the observation of people and their environments.

My next step is continuing my study at Edinburgh College of Art, completing a BA (Hons) Illustration. My long term goal is to continue freelancing and find work as an Art Therapist.

Above is my typeface ‘joyce’ used in a print/digital campaign for the Irish Language Act. My enthusiasm for all forms of artistic expression, from fine art to web developing, is present in my portfolio, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of my work.

In 2016 I received the Creative Edinburgh Award for my book ‘Pronouncing Poland’ and my future plans involve its publication and completing a Masters in design.

I am an Interactive Designer and during my time at Edinburgh college I have gained a range of new design skills. A lot of the work I did included UX and UI design, web and app design, branding, digital publishing and basic 2D and 3D animation. Most of my designs incorporate bright and bold visuals with dark front or back elements to contrast. My concepts are strong and I tend to find my inspiration from films, music and other forms of media.

My project makes a connection between historic Hungarian population of migrants and current European migration trends. The project is a typographic campaign raising awareness of mistreated migrants that were imprisoned after a riot that took place at the Hungarian-Serbian border

The idea was to tell this story as direct as possible, so they can have a Polish point of view about their situation. I have been interested in Art since I was a child drawing on my grandfather´s wall. I had never thought of becoming a graphic designer until I realised how many things are made by graphics. Over the last 6 years I have studied graphic and multimedia design trying to learn as much as possible. I moved to Edinburgh for new opportunities and to expand my knowledge. I see design as way of life and I take inspiration from the street.

I am looking to find a web design course or an internship to work in a real environment and get some experience from.

When it comes to design style, I’m an advocate of the simple and clean and I therefore try to emulate this in my design solutions. Using clean cut and bold typefaces with simple layouts in my work.

I plan to move on, either to Graphic Design at Edinburgh Napier University or to Interaction Design at the University of Dundee at 3rd or 2nd year entry level. I also hope to be looking for work experience in a design firm to gain a better understanding of the work environment I am entering into.

I have become proficient at using the creative software, but I also love drawing and crafting when required by the brief. I have particularly enjoyed creating campaigns that allow others to explore their creativity. Creating products that make life easier for busy people is also very satisfying.

I first started experimenting with computer based graphics 10 years ago. That’s when I started doing pixel-art in MS Paint in order to build tilesets and develop my own games. I also did t-shirt designs for companies like www.threadless.com and www.bastard.cz.

My passion and curiosity for digital art grew and led me to Scotland, where I got into an Interactive Design course. In ID I got to learn and explore anything from 3D design to animation and experience the work progress for each discipline. After college I want to stay in Scotland and actively look for intership and job opportunities.

For this branding project my idea is based on the font outline and creating shapes from it. It’s simple and memorable. I also used the shapes of the logo to create patterns to incorporate with the logo and have that brand relation within. The shapes also represent the endless creativity and always have fresh thinking.

The monotype brief entry for D&AD 2017 was to promote a disenfranchised or misunderstood culture or group through typography. I chose the Lakota Sioux. The creative challenge was to explore the issues around protecting the Lakota’s traditional culture in the 21st century. I have done this by repurposing the pictographic language of the Lakota into a modern typeface, ‘Old Lakota’. By combining the typeface with their traditional virtues, cultural images, emotional colour pairings and native landscapes, a virtual storytelling unfolds in a set of 12 posters. This project serves both as a voice and a tribute.

Now that I added my HND in Interactive Design to my honours degree in psychology, I plan to continue training in UX/UI and working freelance. But first and foremost, I am pursuing a placement, intership or employment with marketing agencies or software companies.

33 1/3 is a publishing house that prints books about music. This year, we used them as the subject for our rebranding project. While researching, I was inspired by the circles found on records and by the rings on a tree trunk. I thought by basing the branding on these circles, it would represent the core of the business: music and paper. Again, looking at records, I really liked how each album was identifiable by the design in the centre but there was a

consistency in the black disk. I used this as a basis for the design of the book covers: black background, but a unique design for each book.

After graduating from Edinburgh College, I am moving to Newcastle to study Interactive Media Design at Northumbria University and to work as a freelance designer.
