Ok, let’s get underway…

8 Ways to Attack Proof Your Home The average home isn’t anywhere near as secure as we’d like to think.

Worse than that, the conventional wisdom that is passed off as “home security advice” is just about worthless.

All it does is to help keep honest people honest—not keep the dishonest out.

You can kick the average dead-bolted front door wide open!

The problem is that most home security measures don’t take into consideration a determined attack by armed enemies. All they do is keep out people who want to quietly sneak into your home.

If someone is willing to make noise, those measures won’t do a thing to keep them out.

After all, a locked window isn’t much of a deterrent to an attacker with a rock in hand.

The most common entry points for criminals and attackers are the first floor doors and windows. To make the home more secure, the best steps to take is to make all entrances stronger.

What to do…

Replace Hinge Screws.

The screws holding the front door hinges are only about 3/4 inch long and just go into the wood door frame. That’s not very much security.

Replace them with 3-inch case-hardened screws, long enough that the screws will go into the stud behind the frame.

Security Door Strikers.

A deadbolt is wonderful if it is installed into something strong enough to hold it.

However, the typical door frame is wood, not metal. If it were metal, there would be no way of kicking it open.

The normal metal striker plate is small and only mounted into the door frame. When kicked, the deadbolt breaks the doorframe itself, which is the weakest part of the system.

By replacing the normal striker plate with a security striker plate, which can be 12 inches to 60 inches long, the force of the kick is spread over a larger area, making it harder to break through the door.

Be sure to put the security striker in with 3-inch case hardened screws.

Door Clubs.

These devices connect the door knob side of the door to the floor.

The drawbacks to this system are that it has to be manually locked after closing the door and can’t be opened from the outside.

However, once in place, the door club makes it almost impossible to kick through the door. Any assailant would have to break the door down in order to get in.

Replace Sliding Glass Doors.

Sliding glass patio doors are the least secure place on any home. They are typically hidden in the back of the house, where outsiders can’t see what any attacker might be doing.

The door might be difficult to pop off its track, but all it takes is a rock or hammer to turn that door into a pile of broken glass.

Your best option is to install a regular entry door and apply the security measures mentioned above.

Window Security Bars.

Like the sliding glass door, windows are easy to break through if the attacker doesn’t care about broken glass. The best solution for this is to install security bars.

The bars attach to the brick or siding of the home. While it would be possible to get them off by hooking a chain to a truck, they make it impossible to easily break in through a window.

Window Security Film.

Perhaps a more attractive solution - if you don’t like the idea of putting burglar bars over your windows, cover the inside of them with security film.

This usually has to be installed by a professional installer, but since this precaution protects the window from breaking, it’s well worth the effort.

An intruder would have to pound on the window with a hammer to get it to break.

Padlock the Garage Door.

Garage doors are fairly easy to break through, especially aluminum.

The lock can easily be broken out, allowing the locking bars to be manually operated.

By simply putting a bike lock or a gun lock through the holes in the track, right above one of the wheels, you prevent them from lifting the door, even if they get the lock out.

Plant Hedges.

A ten-foot tall cement wall in front of your house may help protect it, but it would be a bit obvious.

Anyone who saw it would wonder what you had inside the house to warrant that level of security.

However, a hedge of thorny bushes is almost as effective a barrier and looks better too. Any intruders will avoid the hedge and try to climb over your gate instead.

While that might not keep them out, it at least funnels them to right in front of your door, where it is easy for you to confront them.

The Bottom Line

To properly defend your home, you need to stop thinking about keeping a cat burglar out and start thinking about how to fight off an angry mob.

The burglar will probably do everything they can to get in without attracting attention, whereas a mob of ten hungry people won’t care about attracting attention. They will take actions that the cat burglar would never think of trying.

With that in mind, protect your home by making it hard enough to break inside to discourage them and to give you time to react.

Even a minute will give you enough time to grab your firearms / weapons and be ready to repel boarders. Once you’re ready, you’ll be able to discourage them much more effectively than your locked door.

Ok, so there’s your 8 ways to fortify your home – but if your threshold is breached you need to move on to considering a variety of items that can become great weapons if push comes to shove…

8 Unusual Weapons for Home Defense It doesn’t do you any good to do everything you can to survive any sort of disaster that might come along if you’re unprepared to defend your home.

While we can all hope that our property never comes under attack, hope alone won’t keep us safe.

In a crisis situation where there is a shortage of food, there is a pretty good chance that hungry people will be out looking for sustenance for their families.

If they find out that you have a stockpile in your house, they may just decide that they need that food more than you do. Your ability to defend your home in such a case may be all that keeps you and your family alive and happily eating.

While firearms are the weapons of choice to protect your home, they aren’t the only thing you can use. Almost anything can become a weapon when the need arises.

But to transform an everyday object into an effective weapon, you must have already thought about how you will use it so that you’re ready when the time comes.

Here’s some options…

Wasp Spray.

This irritant has one major advantage over pepper spray. In order to use pepper spray to defend yourself, you have to let the attacker get within about three feet.

Wasp spray is intended for use at a distance of about 20 feet.

That means you attack your assailant before he gets close enough to do you any harm.

Sonic Weapons.

This was first developed for use in keeping modern pirate ships away.

Some merchantmen and even U.S. Navy ships have them. You can buy small, battery-powered sonic weapons for use at home.

When activated, they produce a sound that either makes the attackers nauseous or afraid.

Either way, the effect makes it harder for someone to attack.

Tactical Light.

Many modern tactical lights are bright enough to momentarily stun, fending off an attack.

Some even have a strobe mode, where they will flash rapidly, temporarily blinding and disorienting the attacker.

While this won’t work as a permanent defense, it can give you the moment you need to grab a better weapon to fight with.

Flare Gun.

A flare gun makes a great terror weapon, albeit one that probably shouldn’t be used indoors. The flare is fired out of a special 12-gauge shotgun shell, looking like a fireball.

That’s enough to give anyone pause—even those who think that they are brave enough to charge into firing guns. There’s just something about having fireballs shot at the face that scares people.

The flare gun itself is normally orange plastic so paint it black to make it look more like a “real” gun.

Dogs.

If you have large dogs for pets, they can be trained to attack and defend your home.

Even people who are trained in the use of weapons will not know what to do when they are attacked by a dog. Dogs move so quickly that they are hard to fight.

They can often chase off an attacker while you watch from a safe distance.

Caltrops.

The caltrop is an ancient defensive weapon originally developed to ward off cavalry charges.

It is a four-pointed star configured in such a way that, no matter how it falls, one of the points is always facing up. If a horse should step on the point, it will cripple him.

They work just as well against people, especially when scattered in your yard under your windows. Anyone who wants to break in through the window will likely step on one, hurting themselves severely.

Torch.

This is a terror weapon. As with the flare gun, people naturally try to avoid getting burnt.

They will usually pay so much attention to what you are trying to do to them with the torch that they’ll forget to attack you even if they have the upper hand.

Pressure Washer.

If you have a pressure washer, you can use it as a non-dangerous weapon.

The high-pressure water makes it hard for any attacker to do anything, let alone effectively attack you. Adding a chemical irritant at the soap injector will make it even more effective.

The Bottom Line

The biggest reason to have a variety of weapons available to you is that you don’t know when an attacker might try and gain entrance to your home.

Even if you have a concealed carry license and develop a habit of going around armed, there will always be a time when you aren’t.

Should an intruder come into your home while your guard is down, you may not be able to get to your gun. Having other options available, scattered through the house, greatly increases your ability to defend your home and your family.

Ok – so what if you’re not under attack, but freak weather or flooding has damaged your house? You need to make sure you’ve got these 12 items in stock because depending on the circumstances there might be a long wait for the repairman to fix you up…

12 Emergency Home Repair Supplies You Should Stock There are many lists around of what you should stockpile to be ready in case of an emergency.

Most of those focus on the food that you should have on hand, as well as some basic survival supplies. There’s nothing wrong with that, but this category is often missed: repair supplies.

Many of the most likely disasters which we are preparing for are natural disasters. These commonly cause moderate to severe damage to people’s homes—the same homes that they have everything stockpiled in and are trying to survive in.

With damage to the home, it’s hard to use it as a survival shelter.

Moderate damage to a home, or even severe damage that is localized to only part of a home, doesn’t necessarily make it uninhabitable.

The government may decide to declare that the home is damaged beyond repair, but doesn’t mean it can’t be a shelter for survival, at least until a better option becomes available.

However, staying put may require some modest repairs, such as covering windows that were shattered or fixing a hole in the roof.

With the right materials, you can do a lot of repairs to a home. The home won’ be returned to like-new condition, but it can be fixed up to protect you from the elements.

It doesn’t have to be pretty, just functional.

To have in stock…

Tarps.

These can be used to cover up a leaky roof, a hole in the wall or a window that has had the glass broken. Tarps are probably the easiest and most versatile home repair material there is to work with.

Clear Plastic Sheeting.

While you can cover broken windows with tarps, you’re better off using clear plastic sheeting. Not only will it let more light into the home, but it will also make it possible for you to see what’s going on outside.

Lath or Furring Strips.

If you just nail or staple the tarps or plastic sheeting in place, the wind will tear them out. You’re much better off nailing them through lath or furring strips.

These thin pieces of wood will spread the pressure out, preventing tearing in the tarps.

Plywood.

Plywood is another easy way to repair holes in walls and roofs. It’s also stronger than using a tarp alone.

While a tarp may work fine for a typical leaky roof that has hail damage or shingles that have blown off, if there’s a hole in the roof from a tree branch, you’ll probably need something with a bit more substance.

That’s where the plywood comes in handy.

2" x 4" Studs.

You can build anything from walls to roofs with plywood and studs. You can even build a smokehouse out of them, if you need one for smoking a steer you happen to shoot.

Duct Tape.

It’s no secret how useful duct tape is. With it, you can repair lots of different things, even if you don’t have the right repair materials to use.

Make sure you have plenty as you’ll find plenty of uses for it.

Wire Ties.

Almost as useful as duct tape, these plastic ties are typically used for bundling wires.

They come in a variety of sizes and are great for tying just about anything together, even criminals’ hands.

I once made a shelter in the woods by tying the branches together with wire ties.

Caulking.

Good for repairing all types of leaks.

You may need it in conjunction with your other repair materials to make sure that the rain can’t get through that repair in your roof.

Wire Nuts.

For connecting electrical wires together. If part of your wiring is damaged, you may need to disconnect part of your home’s electrical system.

In that case, wire nuts will allow you to reconnect the parts that are working, as well as cap hot wires that aren’t attached to anything.

Plumbing Fittings.

It’s possible that the part of your home that gets damaged is the part with pipes running through it.

In that case, you may need to splice plumbing pipes or even cap them off in order to use the water in the rest of the house.

Be sure to have the adhesive and primer to go with the fittings.

Hardware.

All types of hardware are likely to be needed, especially an assortment of nails and screws.

You might need brackets, hinges and latches as well to close up your temporary repairs.

Extension Cords.

If you end up using a generator or any alternative electrical power system, you will need extension cords to get the power to your appliances and other electrical devices.

There’s no such thing as having too many extension cords.

The Bottom Line

A few simple materials can make all the difference between keeping your home usable and sleeping out under a tree.

While you won’t be able to return your home to its pre-disaster condition with this short list, you will be able to dry it in so that your home can protect you from the weather.

Safety makes any repair worth doing.

In addition to these materials, make sure that you have the necessary tools, especially manual tools that don’t require electricity.

We are so used to using electric power tools these days that many people don’t have their manual equivalents.

If the power goes out, as usually happens in any disaster, power tools won’t do anyone any good, even with the materials to work with.
