Hamburger Paragraphs are a great way to explain to your

students how to write a clear, concise, and precise paragraph. I

have used this technique for years and think it lends itself very

well to the 5-paragraph essay they will write in later years.

Included in this packet are all of the resources you will need to

get successful paragraphing off the ground!

I begin by talking with kids all about hamburgers and their

favorite toppings. I tell them that my favorite kind is one with

lettuce, the burger and cheese (just like the illustration), and in

order to make it perfectly, I need to include all of the pieces

just right. The introduction sentence (top bun) gives readers a

“running start” into the piece, the three supports (lettuce,

burger, and cheese) are their to give strength (and flavor!) to

the paragraph, and the conclusion (bottom bun) ties the

paragraph up neatly at the end. Without the top or bottom bun,

my burger would be too messy and if it were missing anything in

the middle, it wouldn’t be tasty…. You get the idea

Included to help you are a large color and b&w anchor chart- I

post the color version and as we talk through it, I have the kids

color each layer in their b&w version.

There are three forms you can use to plan and I would

recommend using them in this way:

- Anchor Chart with titles only- This is a perfect place to

have kids gather words, phrases, feelings, and ideas

for the supports they will use in their writing.

- Anchor Chart with titles and lines- This is the place

where kids will work to construct their intro &

concluding sentences as well as the supports that their

paragraph needs. I typically model a lot using this slide

and have loads of extra copies on hand, especially at

the beginning of the unit.

- The blank hamburger is there for future needs or for

assessment purposes. I will use it to reteach when I

want kids to have an empty format to fill in, or if I want

to give a “Hamburger Quiz” and have them fill it in like

the anchor chart.

The mini-hamburgers (in color and b&w) are available

for you to glue into the students’ writing folders,

notebooks, or journal. I find these are great reminders

throughout the unit and later in the year, especially

come test-prep time.

After kids have their plan in place, they can construct

their paragraph in their notebooks or journals or the

included lined page. When they finish, have them use the

included rubric to check their work to ensure all of their

planning parts made it into their final piece. A teacher

rubric is also included with a small comments section.
