The hisTory of BTeCOriginally BTEC was an organisation – the Business and Technician Education Council – set up in 1983 to nationally validate and accredit high quality, consistent vocational qualifications. In 1996, following a merger of BTEC and the University of London Examinations Assessment Council (London Examinations) a new company, Edexcel was born. Few years later Edexcel became part of Pearson and BTEC remained a brand for work-related qualifications owned and offered only by Pearson.

WhaT are BTeCs?BTECs are work-related qualifications suitable for a wide range of learners. They provide a practical, real-world approach to learning alongside a theoretical background.

Where are BTeCs DeLiVereD?BTECs are delivered in schools, colleges, universities, independent training providers and employers. They are popular qualifications amongst young people and adult learners alike. BTECs are flexible, enabling students to study full-time or part-time.

hoW are BTeCs assesseD?BTECs are flexible qualifications that allow tutors to prepare assessments and projects according to the needs of the group, and the local requirements.BTECs are assessed through internally-marked assignments (and not through examinations). Learners study real-life, work-based case studies.

1. Each BTEC is made up of a number of units. The number of units in a qualification is dependent on the level and size of the qualification.

2. Each BTEC unit has a credit value. Credits are based on the amount of learning time a learner needs to complete the qualification, with 1 credit equating to 10 hours approximately of learning time.

3. The time taken to complete each BTEC also depends on the level and size of the qualification. Many BTECs take one or two years to complete, depending on whether the learner is studying full or part time, and others may be less.

4. To complete each unit, learners must satisfactorily complete assessments (portfolio of evidence) set by the tutor. As BTECs are designed to develop practical skills, assignments may be completed in a variety of formats – such as film clips, project proposals, and business plans. Learners are always given clear guidelines as to what they have to achieve and how to do this.

5. Learners’ work is assessed by the tutor throughout the course. This ongoing assessment allows learners to continually analyse and improve their own performance.

6. Internal Verifiers are appointed within the institution to moderate assessed work and check that the standards we have set are being met.

7. Our International Standard Verifiers will visit your organisation to ensure that assessment processes, assessments decisions, and quality assurance procedures are being met – thus ensuring that BTEC standards are consistent internationally.

8. Unit results are graded as either Pass, Merit or Distinction.

hoW are BTeCs DeVeLoPeD?Edexcel works closely with employers and professional bodies to develop BTEC qualifications that are rigorous and relevant to industry. By doing this, we ensure that each BTEC is relevant and prepares learners for a successful future, whether they want to progress on to higher education or go straight into employment.

WHICH BTEC IS SUITABLE?



BTEC LEVEL 2 FIRSTS

Around 100 BTEC Level 2 First qualifications are available, each linked to an industry sector. Learners may take BTEC Level 2 Firsts alongside International GSCE. Aimed at 14+ years old, these qualifications come in three sizes: the Level 2 Diploma (equivalent to four GCSEs in the UK), Level 2 Extended Certificate (equivalent to two GCSEs in the UK), and the Level 2 Certificate (equivalent to one GCSE in the UK).

BTEC LEVEL 3 NATIONALS

BTEC Level 3 Nationals are designed as specialist, vocationally-related qualifications that can be taught alongside, or as an alternative to GCE A Levels, and for learners who have clear view of their future career or are seeking progression to higher education. Being work-related qualifications, they provide a practical, real-world approach to learning and are underpinned by theory. Aimed at 16+ year olds, they are accepted internationally as an entry requirement for some universities and higher education colleges, and are highly valued by employers across the world.

BTEC LEVEL 4/5 HIGHER NATIONALS

The BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificates and Level 5 Higher National Diplomas are widely recognised by universities and professional bodies. There are more than 150 qualifications available, suitable for learners aged 18 and above. The Level 4 HNC is often studied part-time alongside full-time employment. A BTEC Level 4/5 Higher National learner will develop management and other higher level technical skills required by employers. After a period of usually two years (HND full-time, HNC part-time), learners can progress to the final year of degree programmes in a range of universities.

BTEC SPECIALIST & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

A large number of our BTEC programmes can be used as qualifications to further existing skills and knowledge, or to complement learner’s main academic studies. RECOGNITION & PROGRESSION PATHWAYS INTRODUCTION BTECs are practical qualifications which help equip learners for work, give them a greater insight into different industries, and the theoretical knowledge needed to work in them. BTECs are available in a wide range of levels from entry level all the way through to level 7, which is equivalent to a master degree.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RECOGNISING AND/OR DELIVERING BTEC QUALIFICATIONS? There are many benefits to becoming a BTEC partner or centre. Recognising our BTECs qualifications will help your institution to attract students, as they are able to progress easily within BTEC range and similar level qualifications. Our BTECs also offer your learners a wide choice of pathways and units to assist them get into work or higher education. In particular our HNC are equivalent to the first year of a HND and to the first year of a degree course. Our HND is a Level 5 qualification and learners can progress onto the second or final year of a degree with participating universities. Our Level 7 diploma can lead onto a master/MBA programme at university.

EQUIVALENCES This table below shows how BTECs are weighted across different national frameworks. The QCF is the system that is used within the UK whilst the EQF refers to the European Qualification Framework. Both recognise the size and equivalences of BTECs.

BECOMING A BTEC CENTRESTEP-BY-STEP GUIDANCE

Step 1. Becoming a BTEC approved centreThe first step towards delivering BTECs is becoming an approved BTEC centre – initially by gaining centre approval, followed by approval for each qualification you wish to deliver. The approval process enables us to ensure that the institution has all the required resources in place to correctly deliver and assess the BTEC programmes. During the approval process, the Regional Office will liaise with the person appointed as Centre Co-ordinator within the organisation.

Step 2. Putting a Quality Assurance Process in placeThe BTEC Quality Assurance Process ensures that standards are maintained in all centres, enabling us to guarantee consistency of BTEC assessment across the world. The BTEC Quality Assurance process does this by helping the institution put in place the people, systems and processes for assuring accurate assessment and record maintenance. The Regional Office, the Service Operations team, and International Standards Verifiers will support the institution throughout this process. We provide a Centre Guide to Quality to help you with all aspects of this important part of delivering BTECs.

Step 3. Registering your learnersRegistration is the process that enters a learner for a particular BTEC programme with Edexcel. All BTEC learners must be registered in order to claim certificates successfully.
