CHN ON THE GO
Equips Community Health Nurses with a smartphone app designed with and for these frontline health workers who visit rural pregnant mothers and newborns. The app offers immediate diagnostic support, accredited e-learning courses, tools for planning targets such as the number of children to immunize, and WhatsApp groups to connect nurses to peers and supervisors. Partners include Grameen Foundation and Ghana Health Service.
INNOVATIONS
Improves health behaviors in remote communities with high maternal and newborn deaths rates through robust messaging for women and those who influence their decisions, such as husbands and elders, and rewards communities that change with a water pump or emergency vehicle. The program aims to make facility deliveries, exclusive breastfeeding and other improved maternal and newborn health practices the social norm.
Develops a health planning tool that uses computer modeling to determine ideal locations for ambulances and static and mobile emergency obstetric and neonatal care clinics.

PHASE 1 PILOTSInnovations completed four Phase I pilots that addressed maternal and child health gaps in the health system. The most successful, a toll-free hotline plus automated tips and reminders for expectant and new mothers called Chipatala Cha Pa Foni, is scaling up in Malawi.
ESSENTIAL NEWBORN CARE CORPS
Trains and rebrands traditional birth attendants, who used to assist home deliveries, to counsel pregnant and new mothers at home and refer them to health centers for care, deliveries and family planning. To incentivize their new government-recognized roles, the now-called Maternal Newborn Health Promoters earn income as social entrepreneurs selling health and baby products to the mothers they visit.
Designs low-cost, high quality medical devices for Kenya’s maternity wards where functioning equipment is scarce. In this unique partnership, engineering staff and students from the University of Nairobi and nurses from Kenyatta National Hospital co-design the devices. Maker, UNICEF and Philips Foundation recently launched a partnership in Kenya to design devices locally for women and children.
