Do-Now: 2/02/11

• Please take out your “Cracking the Genetic Code” Worksheet and give it to someone else. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR NAME IS ON IT!

Agenda: 2/02/11

• Correct DNA worksheet

• A Note on the Genetic Disorder Presentations

• Ms. Morris’ Homepage

• Have Your DNA and Eat It Too!

DNA lab

You Will Need:

• 5 green marshmallows (ADENINE)

• 5 pink marshmallows (THYMINE)

• 3 yellow marshmallows (CYTOSINE)

• 3 white marshmallows (GUANINE)

• 8 toothpicks

Procedure:

• Put together the first 8 base pairs for SEQUENCE 1, as shown the worksheet

• When everyone is finished, your table partner will check that your model is correct.

• Once I have checked your model, you can eat it!

Homework:

• Bring your laptop and flash drive to finalize your presentation tomorrow!

• WE WILL BE PRESENTING IN THE AUDITORIUM MONDAY AND TUESDAY!

DNA...

*...stands for deoxyribonucleic acid*…is the largest molecule known

single, unbroken strand may contain manymillions of atoms and is about six feet long!

*…is found in the CHROMOSOMES

DNA molecules are made of two long chains of smaller molecules, called NUCLEOTIDES.

Page 8: Introduction to DNA IS LIFE The rest is just details!

NUCLEOTIDES

* There are four bases:-known by letters ---> A, T, C and G.

A=adenine T=thymine C=cytosine G=guanine

A<-->T or C<-->G Adenine always bonds to Thymine

Cytosine always bonds to Guanine

These combine to form BASE PAIRS

Nucleotides are a combination of a sugar, phosphate and a BASE

The base pairs... (nucleotides)

Two chains of nucleotides combine to form the basic structure of DNA

Page 10: Introduction to DNA IS LIFE The rest is just details!

This pattern of base pairs...

...is called the DOUBLE HELIX.

Page 11: Introduction to DNA IS LIFE The rest is just details!

The Double Helix

* These patterns of nucleotides “tell” your cells to make proteins.

(DNA tells your cells to make thousands of proteins.)

A part of DNA (base pairs) which makes a certain protein is called a GENE. (Gene = A Protein Recipe!)

(we have 80-100 Thousand Genes!)

All these proteins (made by genes) determine what you look like!....

(eye color,blood type,gender,some diseases,etc...)

GENES

We get our DNA (genes) from our parentsHeredity = the passing of genes

THIS IS THE SCIENCE OF
