We taught one 3-hour class with 12 participants from Youth Strategies. Our primary goal was to teach the participants the basics of baking, a valuable skill for the home and potential employment. At the same time, we expanded the participants’ awareness about cost of goods, sale items, short cuts, couponing, and how to shop within a budget. We also put together a bake sale to raise money for Youth Strategies.

Our community was served by reaching out and helping twelve teenagers in Youth Strategies, learn basic kitchen procedures that might not have been taught to them in their home. We also worked with the Jones Center and used their Catering Kitchen for the baking class.

Our contact for the project was Mike Fohner from Youth Strategies.

We achieved:• Greater awareness of cultural perspective, writing clear,

coherent, well-organized documents. Recognizing practical applications of learning theories, philosophical concepts, role and nature of schooling and teaching, and education in general.

• Understanding of self as a learner and future teacher, integration of our knowledge of self and students to the context of the school.

• Higher order thinking, effective oral communication skills, and use computer proficiently, and development of soft skills.

• The students at the baking class needed some level of mathematical literacy in order to measure out the ingredients.

• The students at the baking class had to have effective oral communication skills to communicate with those in their group and us as the instructors.

As far as technology was concerned, we used Microsoft Word to make the recipe

cards for the baking class, Microsoft Excel to make a spreadsheet that compared different ingredient’s prices between

several stores in the area and we used Excel to make our time logs. Also, we used

Microsoft Publisher to make signs for the bake sale, and Microsoft PowerPoint to

make this presentation.

The group had to work together and find times throughout each week where we could all meet and discuss the project.

We learned to organize and communicate through e-mail, text messaging, and phone calls when preparing for the baking class on November 1st, as well as preparing for the bake sale on November 14th.
