Introduction to Islam

This half term we’re going to be learning about Islam.

What do you already know about Islam and the lives of their followers, called Muslims?

Muslims believe that there is one true God called Allah – the word ‘Allah’ means God in Arabic.

Muslims worship in a building called a mosque. On the right is a picture of what some mosques look like.

When Muslims pray, they must always face Makkah in Saudi Arabia. Many Muslim men will wear a small cap called

a taqiyah when they pray.

First, we would like you to watch the video called “What is Islam” which gives you a bit of an introduction to Islam:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpdtsbk/articles/zrxxgwx

Then, visit this web page https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zkvgcqt and scroll down to the second video in which a girl called Sara describes the Five Pillars of

Islam – these are the rules that Muslims try to live by.

The First Pillar of Islam is ‘Shahadah’. It is anArabic sentence that Muslims must repeat every

day.

In this video https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zstfgk7

the man is listening to the Shahadah.

Listen to the video carefully and then, answer these questions in full sentences:

1. What is the first pillar of Islam? What do the words mean?

You could draw a speech bubble like the one on the right to put the words inside if you like.

The five pillars are important rules that Muslimsteach children and when a baby is first born, the

words of the Shahadah are whispered in theirears so they are the first words the baby hears.

2. Why do you think Muslims want these words to be the very first ones the baby hears?

The words of the Shahadah are a bit like a ‘welcome’ into the world for a new born baby. They also help them to be a good Muslim.

3. What are some of the important messages that your parents tried to teach you when you were younger?

4. If someone new joined our class, what important messages or words of welcome would you want to share with them at first?

What important rules do you think they would need to learn to be a good member of our school community?

If you would like to, you could add some illustrations to your writing.

The Shahadah

‘The Lion and the Unicorn’

Questions from the page that starts: “One afternoon Mick came across Lenny…”:

When Mick says, “It’s cruelty, bullying and oppression we’re fighting against,” he means that the Nazis used their power in a very cruel way and they treated people including Jewish people very badly and bullied them.

Please remember to keep writing down the answers to all the questions in full sentences in your book.

Looking: Why is Lenny upset when he’s sitting in the walled garden?

What does Lenny and his family have in common with Mick?

Clue:

1. What clues are there to show us that Lenny is upset on the first paragraph of today’s reading? Find two.

2. When Mick sees Lenny, he “politely failed to notice his red-rimmed eyes.” What does this mean? What does it tell us about the kind of person that Mick is and how he feels about Lenny?

Choose the best quotations from the story that show this.

Thinking: Why do you think Lenny felt better after Mick told him his story? If you were Lenny, what would you try to tell anotherchild who was being bullied for wetting the bed?

Tricky words or phrases you’ll come across: blurted out – said very quickly without thinking properly about itlong to be brave – wish I could be bravecourage – feeling brave enough to do things that scare you

Fractions: unit and non-unit fractions We haven’t learned about fractions for a little while

now so let’s see how much you remember

today!

Remember a fraction is an equal part of a

whole.

There are 3 counters altogether.1 of the counters is yellow2 of the counters are red.

So, 13 of the counters are yellow.

23 of the counters are red.

Can you remember the names for the

two parts of a fraction?

What is the top number called?

What is the bottom number called?

See the answer on the next page!

This is a unit fraction because the ‘top number’ is

1.

In the tower, there are 6 cubes altogether. 3 of the cubes are green. 2 of the counters are yellow. 1 of the cubes is blue.

So, $% of the cubes are green.

2% of the cubes are yellow.

&% of the cubes is blue.

Because 3 out of 6 of the cubes are green, we can also say that

half ( &' ) of the cubes are green.
