Changes are made accordingly.

Activity Plan: What Goes In It?Timing:

• How long? What time?• Always have buffer time for travelling time, etc. (if you’re allocated 50 minutes, expect about 35

minutes of time to carry out your activity)• Put it in a lovely timetable so it’s easy to refer to!• Allocate time for every single thing you want to do, add it to your proposal

Safety Precautions:• What can possibly go wrong?• How are we going to prevent this?

Reflection Questions:• What can I ask them to ensure they take away something meaningful from this?

Page 17: Introduction to Peer Leaders An incredible slideshow done by your equally incredible SPLs (there is no need to copy anything until the last slide)

Logistics: What Do I Need?Materials

• Physics things you actually need to bring for your activity

Venue• Choose a suitable venue. Tell

others so no one else claims it as theirs as well.

• Flexibility is important. Most of the time, there might be a need for change in venue. Let a SPL/teacher know and go somewhere else.

Safety Precautions● Safety precautions must ALWAYS be included, because WE are in charge of everyone’s safety and

wellbeing.

● Appoint a PL to be safety officer for all sessions, to always check

● Ask that everyone is feeling alright

● Conduct headcounts

● Students to bring along water bottles to stay hydrated (in the event of activity that requires a lot of physical activity)

● INJURIES/SOMEONE MISSING: Report to a SPL/teacher immediately. At least 1 PL takes care of the remainder of the class while you get help.

● INJURIES: DO NOT attempt to do First Aid if you are not certified/qualified. Seek assistance from someone who does.

• Prepare your questions beforehand to be asked at the end of the activity

• Reflect the main purpose of activity

• Challenge students to think, to take away something from activity

• What did I learn from this game that I can apply to my everyday life?

• What could I have done better in this game?

• What mistakes could have been avoided?

Common

Difficulties

Miscommunication

● Who does what??● Be clear when

communicating both with fellow PLs and other students

● Ensure everybody knows their role to play. No one gets excluded.

Last-Minute Changes

● Things (mostly) never go according to plan

● Don’t panic, stay calm● Plan B? Plan C?● Wet weather? Haze?● Be flexible and listen out for

any changes!

Non-enthusiastic students

● Smile, be enthusiastic! High spirits are contagious!

● Involve everybody. Nudge the quieter girls to participate more!

● Always be encouraging

Missing students● IMMEDIATELY tell a

SPL/teacher● Arrange for 1 PL to do

constant head counts● If going to the toilet,

students to go in groups of 2s or 3s

● Should someone be missing, check if any other student knows where they areDon’t panic! SPLs will always be there to help if you

need it!

Reminders & Notes (1)

● Always include everybody!○ Make sure everybody gets a chance to participate○ When splitting into groups, try to split any obvious ‘cliques’ and

get them to interact with new friends!● Communicate CLEARLY

○ Give clear instructions○ Make sure that everyone knows and understands the rules

● Spread yourselves around when conducting activities● REFLECTIONS!!!● Keep time!! (SUPER IMPORTANT)● Remember to keep track of your sec 1s, make sure you do head

counts after moving to a station (mention what happened last year when we forgot to bring the materials needed for the games, resulting in us having to improvise)

Page 23: Introduction to Peer Leaders An incredible slideshow done by your equally incredible SPLs (there is no need to copy anything until the last slide)

Reminders & Notes (2)

● When interacting with students, especially those new to SC, be:○ Warm and caring! Make sure that they feel comfortable in the

new environment○ Approachable! Being welcoming makes them feel more at ease, if

they have any problems, they won’t hesitate to go to you!○ ENTHUSIASTIC! As PLs, how you act will affect how the

participants act! A smile goes a long way :-D○ Encouraging :-) Many of them are nervous so it helps to know

that we’re here for them!● Remind them about the school rules, because they might not be

familiar with ours. ○ But do it nicely and gently!!! Don’t be scary :-0

● Adapt to changes on your feet and be flexible

take these things down.

In the event you forget and you have to take away some things from this sharing…

1. You are important as a PL. Always be kind. Set a good example. 2. When conducting a session, think of others. Remember objectives.3. The template for a proposal will always be available to you. Just remember to be

punctual, responsible and do your part.4. Reflections + Debriefs can be boring. Try to make them interesting. 5. Sometimes things don’t go as planned. Stay calm, improvise, go about it a

different way. 6. If something goes terribly wrong, tell a SPL or a teacher immediately. 7. You guys are pretty awesome. You’re here for a reason. We hope you have

fun and find this as fulfilling and meaningful as we have.
