1. This paper has 8 pages and 4 Sections. 2. This is a closed book examination. 3. All questions in this examination are compulsory, and students are required to attempt

all. 4. For the multiple choice questions, please tick your answer clearly on the question paper. 5. Those questions which require completion of blank areas or boxes, please write your

answer clearly in the boxes on the question paper. 6. Please attach the question paper to your answer booklet.

7. Write your student I.D. on the question paper, as they contain your marked answers for multiple choice and short answer questions.

boxed areas shown in the diagram below? (8 marks)

SECTION 3 - STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY

1. Define the following: (a) normal fault, (b) slickensides striations, (c) mylonite, (d) horst and graben, (e) overfold. (5 marks)

2. Briefly describe the mechanism of overthrust folding. (5 marks)

3. Draw cross sections of an anticline, labelling the fold hinge, fold limbs, fold axis, and the axial plane. (8 marks)

4. How does metamorphic foliation develop? (8 marks) 5. Comment on the role of differential stress in formation of phyllite and schist.
