Introduction

ThislaboratoryconsistsofthreesessionsthatrequiresthestudentstousetheSolidworks™softwareandcompleteLessonbasedontutorial.UponcompletebothSolidworkslaboratorysession,studentswillabletodesignasimplebiomedicalapplicationdevice:anexternalbonefixator.Inthelaboratory,studentswillbe introduced to the basic technique for Solidwork, understand the concepts and the user interfaceavailableintheSolidworks™.StudentswillusethetutorialprovidedandfollowtheexampleaccordinglyforLesson1andLesson2.

Solidworksconceptistoallowusertocreatedrawingdirectlyin3Dorsolidform.SolidworksofferuserasimpleandprettystraightforwardUserInterface.Thereis6mainareaofinterfaceyounormallyworkwith.To learnmoreonSolidworkstutorialyoucansearchforSolidworkTutorialvideousingtheinternetsearchengine.

1) MenuBar–Topmostoftheapplication,executingNewFile,OpenFile,Save,Print,Undo,Select,Rebuild,FilePropertiesandOptions.

2) CommandManager–Accesstopart,assemblyanddrawingeditingtools.

3) FeatureManagerdesigntree–Outlineoverviewhowyourpart,assemblyanddrawingconstructed.

An assembly is a combination of two or more parts, also called components, within one SolidWorksdocument.Youpositionandorientcomponentsusingmatesthatformrelationsbetweencomponents.Assemblyishowallpartsworkstogetherinassembly,checkingforclashesanditfunctionality.FirstallpartsinsertedinassemblybyInsertComponenttool.

Whenallpartsinsertedintoworkspace,Mateiscommandtodefinehowpartsmatewitheachother.

Experiment1:Requirement:1. StudentsneedtoinstalltheSolidworks™softwareaccordingly(32-bit/64-bit).2. Aftertheinstallationfinish,doubleclickthesolidworkicontostartusingit.Instructions:

1. OncetheSolidWorkswindowisopen;intherightsideofthewindowsclick“NewDocument”andselectthefirstoption“a3Drepresentationofasingledesigncomponent”

2. Afterthat,clickon“Tutorials”andtheSolidworkstutorialswindowwillpopup.Inthenew

windowselect“Gettingstarted”.

3. Forthislaboratorysession,wewillfollowtheSolidworkstutorial:Lesson1.Inthetutorialspart,click“Lesson1”.

4. Click“Settingupthenewdocument”.Clickthe“instructions”andfollowthestepprovided.Youwillberequiredtonamethenewdocumentas“design1”.Afterfinishsetupthedocumentclick“next”.

5. Youwillfollowallthestepprovidedinthetutorialswindowandateachtaskfollowthedetailedinstructionsprovidedbyclickinto“Instructions”.Oncefinisheachtaskjustclickonthe“next”.

Note:ifyouunabletolocatetheiconposition,clickontheiconprovidedinthetutorialanditwillprovideyoutheposition.

6. Inthelaststep,thedesignisalreadydone.AttachtheresultandprovidethediscussiononthetechniquesthatyoulearnintheSolidworksdesignsoftware.
