I. Rise of Nationalism• A. While most Europeans
disliked Napoleon, many admired what he had accomplished
• What did Napoleon accomplish?
• B. His empire, along with the French Revolution, inspired the idea of nationalism
I. Rise of Nationalism
• C. Nationalism is the idea that people identify themselves as a part of a community defined by the same language, government, and culture. This community is called a nation.
• D. Before nationalism, people would be loyal to their king, town, or region. Now, their loyalty is to their people
I. Rise of Nationalism• E. Nationalism led to the
unification of German and Italian people under one nation and one government.
• 1. Germans were united because of their leader Otto von Bismarck, who led the strong Prussian military to victories over Austria and France, uniting the German people.

• 1. Ferdinand was to be the next ruler over Austria – Hungary
• 2. He was assassinated by a group of people who wanted independence for Serbia (which had an alliance with Russia)

Hungary battled Russia and their allies in the east while Germany fought France, Britain, and later the United States in the west
• B. Eventually, both fronts came to a stalemate
• 1. Stalemate – when both sides of a contest are neither winning nor losing
