KARTSPORT SOUTHLAND NEWSLETTER

NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT...

Howdy karters, and welcome to a new year that is already well under way, it seems it's been quite a while since we got a newsletter out, but here we are back again.

Our 2015 season kicked off a little earlier than normal on Saturday 18 January in an effort to avoid clashing with other local major events. It was good to see good numbers turning out for that event, the committee was a bit unsure how that would go, fearing many people may have still been away holidaying. Another good turnout for the first round of the club champs and some really good racing there.

We always have strong support from Dunedin club members for our events, with a regular contingent seen down here. I urge all our members to consider taking the trip in their direction. For those of you still fairly new in your racing career there is nothing better for your progress than the experience of a different track. And for the school age competitors, Dunedin are hosting the National School Championships in July this year, something for you to aspire to.

Although it is now slightly old news we must recognise our members that tested themselves against the best in the South Island at Dunedin last Labour weekend. Well done to all of you for stepping up to this, which is pretty much the highest level of competition in karting. The biggest congratulations go to those who got themselves on the podium and of course the pinnacle of that was Brenley Marshall winning Yamaha Heavy, a championship win has been a long time coming for Brenley and from what I hear when he did it, he did it well. Also up there were George Keast 2nd in Rotax Heavy and 3rd Yamaha Heavy, George is always up there with the front runners. Jordan Michels 2nd in Yamaha Light, Jordan has been progressing very well since moving into the senior classes. Luca Burns 2nd in Junior Rotax, Luca has shown results come from the improvements gained from taking on the bigger events such as going to the Nationals

last year (and very shortly he’s off to this year’s Nationals in Palmerston North – all the best for that Luca). Jayde Smith 2nd and Cory Smith 3rd in Vortex Mini Rok, the family two-some who compete as hard with each other as they do against the rest of the field. Kamryn Reddy 3rd in Junior Restricted Yamaha, after still a relatively short time in karting. Kamryn is coming on really well.

We also recognise Jamie Conroy and recently past members Damon and Brendon Leitch in their tilt at the 2015 Toyota Racing Series. These three all began their racing in their childhood in our club, on our track. Congratulations to Jamie and Brendon for taking out race wins in front of the home crowd here at Teretonga.

On the down side of the scale has been our problems with flooding around the track. Over the last year or so I’m sure this has been the worst I have seen at our track and being forced to cancel two events is getting very serious. This puts more pressure on the committee to find and carry out a solution to our drainage difficulties.

Also high on the priority list for the committee has been final sign-off of the new clubrooms building. This had a twist we hadn’t been ready for when the building inspector came for the final inspection. Turns out part of the original requirements for this development was to add a disabled toilet to our complex. We had lost track of this due to some time ago losing our original member that had been managing the project. A proposal was given the go ahead by the committee for an extra toilet to meet the disabled requirements to be constructed inside the canteen building. We thank an ex-member Trevor Withington, and Chris Burns for putting this solution together. Applications for funding assistance from ILT Foundation and Community Trust of Southland were successful so that certainly helps us along. Once these final

Page 3: Invercargill Kart Club Shunt April 2015

issues are all ticked-off we’ll get underway with fully moving the kitchen appliances over to the new building. We anticipate this will have helpers lining up at the door to come in and help in the kitchen (or to put it another way, we’re at a critical point where that needs to happen).

The committee has also developed a strategy to help get more of our membership involved in aspects of the running of the club. The area we are focusing on at the moment is race days and involves making better use of the Duty Class concept kicked off a couple of years ago, we never got it far off the ground. It takes about 15 people to run a race day and the list we have is barely that long. More about this elsewhere in this newsletter.

Our next event is the Southland Spirit of a Nation Championship. This event is only available for those already holding at least a Tier 2 rating on their Competition Licence. This is one of the biggest events we will run this year and we expect many racers to come from other clubs around the South Island. For those of you still quite new to karting and perhaps without a rating yet it’s

worth coming along to see how the bigger events run. Perhaps you can give us some help in a few areas over the event, the canteen will be one where we’re looking for a reasonably bigger team to provide catering for all concerned.

While we’re on the subject of the canteen, another plug for personnel to man this. Perhaps it needs to be pointed out that this is primarily a fundraising exercise for us. Sure it provides the service of feeding us at race events but the canteen raises about $5000 a year for the club. So if we can’t man it and it has to close we’ll need to raise that money by another means. Maybe it could be some other fundraising activity, or most likely would be raising membership subscriptions and/or entry fees. On subscriptions it would probably be an extra $100 per member, on race entry fees it would be an increase of at least $10. If we can build up the numbers willing to help in here the number of times they are called on stays down.

Cheers,

Alaister Marshall – President M: 027 433 7563 E: [email protected]

WHAT'S UP...

RACE DAY PERSONNELThe committee is beginning to make better use of the duty class concept or each race day, in an effort to get help with the whole process of running an event. The duty class are given set-up and end of day tasks each day, with the class rep co-ordinating that with the class members. An outline of what goes into running a race day

is covered in the Race Day Run Sheet included in this newsletter. You’ll see in that the tasks we are looking for each duty class to help with. Part of the strategy is to get new people exposed to some of these key areas, it’s also about a succession process which is desperately needed for the future of the club.

INDIVIDUAL USE OF THE TRACK FOR PRACTICEWe’ve circulated on email earlier in the year that KartSport NZ have introduced new rules for who can use a kart track like ours. The background is that new safety and well-being legislation coming into force in New Zealand later this year goes beyond the previous employment related function and impacts on activities and organisations such as our club. When we say our club we mean all of us as members. However by operating under the formal structure of KartSport NZ, and most importantly by following those rules, to the letter, we are provided indemnity for liability and insurance should any issues arise in the event of something drastic happening.

As individuals we are provided that coverage by holding a KartSport NZ licence and through that being bound to the rule structure. Hence the only people that are allowed to drive a kart on the track are individuals who hold either the traditional Competition Licence or the newly introduced Practice Licence. Because of the importance of ensuring these rules are followed the committee made the decision to withdraw members’ keys and control access to the track via keys being held by key committee members. This is not to restrict members use of the track but ensure those using it do hold a current Competition or Practice Licence.

It must be reinforced that there are a few rules for members using the track for private practice:-

• Keys for private practice are available from:- Rick Michels – 027 434 2281 John Keast – 027 435 8265

• The key is for your access only, lock the gate once you’re inside.

• Only current club members holding valid licence may use the track.

• Full race apparel must be worn by all drivers while on the track.

• All age group rules, ie karts/engines must be followed.

• Only one age group on the track at one time.

• If you become aware of any maintenance needs for the facilities take note and advise a committee member.

One aspect previously unanswered was how a prospective member could get to try out in a kart. We have now learned from KartSport NZ there are two methods for this.

• An authorised member of the karting trade is entitled to supervise a non-licenced person driving a kart. The driver is required to complete a One Day Practice Licence. In our club Rick Michels at Mainland Karting South and John Keast at Invercargill Oil Shop are available for this.

• The second method is under the supervision of a club committee member. In this case the driver must complete the club Indemnity form.

FROM THE CANTEEN...

As you all know we are running the Spirit of a Nation Kart meeting on the weekend of 25/26 April.

Because of the size of the meeting the canteen will be open from 7.30am to serve breakfast to officials and competitors. We require help on both days. Below are the MINIMUM numbers we need to be able to open the canteen:

3 x people from 7.00am–9.00am 2 x people from 9.00am–11.00am 3 x people from 11.00am–1.30pm (We can be flexible with the roster over the two days. Any time that you can give is appreciated.)

The more people that offer to help, the less hours each person needs to help. Because of the new location of the canteen, you are able to help in the canteen and also watch the races you’d like to watch. Please reply by Friday 17 April with a YES/NO so we can put together a roster.
