Alumni Medical School By BEVERLY HOWARD PROMOTIONS for Medical School faculty members as announced by the Board of Regents following the August meeting are as follows : Dr . John W . Barnard, assistant professor to associate professor of anatomy ; Dr . Alton C . Kurtz, assistant pro- fessor to associate professor of biochemistry ; Dr . Charles A . Winter, assistant professor to associate professor of physiology ; Dr . John P . Wolff, lec- turer to associate professor of surgery, and Dr . James G . Binkley, associate professor of obstetrics to professor of clinical obstetrics . T . M . MacDon- ald was granted a leave of absence. The Medical School's plans for refresher work to be offered to doctors returning to civilian prac- tice from military service has been tentatively arranged in courses in three classifications, infor- mal courses, residences and formal courses . The Post-war Medical Educational committee of the School of Medicine was appointed several months ago for the purpose of making a pre- liminary study and outlining a tentative schedule for post-graduate courses to be offered the doctors returning from government service . The study was inaugurated by sending two questionnaires to all the alumni of the school in active service, to determine their reactions to such a program, and to ascertain any special in- terests which they might have . With this informa- tion, several meetings were held and all phases of the problem were discussed informally . Classwork for the first semester of the 1945-46 year at the School of Medicine began on July 2 with an enrollment of 70 freshmen students . There are 280 students in all, 129 of them Army trainees, 80 Navy and 71 civilians . There are 24 women enrolled, 16 of them in the freshman class . Miss Mildred Carolyn Benson, '446a, Oklahoma City and Seminole, and Dr. Benjamin F. Gorrell, '45med, Tulsa, were married on June 18 in Okla- homa City. Mrs . Gorrell, in training as a medical technologist at the University Hospital, expected to finish her course there in September. Dr . Gor- rell, a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and Phi Chi medical fraternity, is serving his in- terneship at St . Joseph's Hospital, Omaha, Nebras- ka, where the couple will make their home . No- Dr . Haskell Anderson, '34med, former director of public health in Blaine County, has been ap- pointed director of the Tri-County Health De- partment at Clinton . The Tri-County unit serves Custer, Washita and Beckham counties . No- Lt . Comdr . J . Harold Abernethy, '39med, and Mrs . Abernethy (Sara Wallace, '35-'38, '43) are the parents of a daughter, Barbara Jane, born June 25 in Oklahoma City . Commander Aber- nethy was on duty in the Pacific. Miss Marjorie West and Dr . Frederick R . Ford, '44med, both of Oklahoma City, were married there on July 5 . Mrs . Ford is a graduate of Western College, Oxford, Ohio, and the Univer- sity of Chicago. She was formerly a case worker with a private Chicago social agency. Dr . Ford is a resident at Grant Hospital in Chicago, where the couple are making their home . ON- Lt. Grace L . Cutler, '44nurse, Oklahoma City, and Pfc . Stanley E . Furtak, Long Island, New York, were married on May 5 in Augusta, Geor- gia . Mrs . Furtak, a member of the Army Nurse Corps, was stationed at the general hospital at Camp Butner, North Carolina . Private Furtak, a veteran of five years' Army service, was to be SEPTEMBER, 1945 discharged soon . The couple plan to live on Long Island . Miss Kathryne Janger, '40-'42, Oklahoma City, and Lt. David J . Geigerman, '44med, Dallas, Texas, were married on July 4 in Chicago . Lieu- tenant Geigerman, also a graduate of the Univer- sity of Wisconsin at Madison, recently completed his internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was stationed at Warner Robins Field, Georgia . The couple established a home near there in Macon . 00- Dr . Leon D. Combs, '44med, and Mrs . Combs (Lorraine Coble, '44nurse) are the parents of a son, Gary Anthony, born July 31 in Oklahoma City . Dr . Combs was a member of the Navy Medical Corps stationed at Oceanside, California . Dr. Mortimer S . Faulkner, Jr ., '42med, died at the Orange Memorial Hospital in Orange, New Jersey, on August 8 following a long illness. He was 31 years old . Dr . Faulkner graduated from East Central State College at Ada with a bachelor of science degree in 1934 . He received an award as the most outstanding student of his class . For the next three years he taught mathematics and science in the high school at St . Louis, Okla- homa, entering Medical School in September, 1938 . Following his graduation, Dr . Faulkner served his internship at Orange Memorial Hos- pital, and was a staff physician there at the time of his death . Survivors include his parents, Mr . and Mrs . M . S . Faulkner, his wife, Mrs . Gerda Faulkner, and a son, Phillip, all of Oklahoma City. a Now is the time to consider a new fall outfit for your house as well as yourself .
