The Stock Market Game is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages 4th-12th graders in the world of economics, investing and personal finance, and prepares them for financially independent futures. Nearly 600,000 students take part across 50 states. There were 1,200 students who participated in West Virginia during the 2018-2019 school year.

Starting with a virtual $100,000, student teams or individuals strive to create the best performing portfolio of bonds, common stocks, and mutual funds. Notre Dame had the top two teams in the state. First place with an ending portfolio balance of $113,822.75 and a 13.80 percentage return above the S&P 500 were the team of Jeremy Hardman and Kira Riffle. In second place with an ending portfolio balance of $113,814.53 and a 13.79 percentage return above the S&P 500 was Alessandro Cava.

Congratulations to the students and their advisor. Pictured from the left are Jeremy Hardman, Kira Riffle, Billy Pulice ’71, and Alessandro Cava. Special thanks to Notre Dame teacher Michelle Riggs for class preparation and support of the stock market game.

Sophie Talkington started to Pole Vault in February of her sophomore year. Three months later, she had won her first Single A State Championship. She had been training as a gymnast, but as her interest in that sport declined, the skills she had learned

transitioned over very well to the pole vault.

Her first State Championship was won with a jump of 10 feet. Her current PR is 12 feet. She credits that improvement to competing during the indoor winter season and the summer training program that she participates in at the Mountaineer Track Club.

Talkington repeated as State Champion during her junior year, breaking the Single A State Championship meet record with a jump of 11 feet 3 1/4 inches. As she enters her senior year, she has two goals in mind saying, “I would really like to win another state championship and break the state pole vault record of 12 feet 4 inches.”

Those goals are becoming closer to reality as Talkington continues to improve with her off season training. She is hoping to continue her development after high school saying, “I’m hoping to compete at the collegiate level, and I’m exploring all my college options”

Talkington will compete for a third state championship during the Spring of 2020.

Notre Dame Principal Julie Frosch and a group of students and staff visited Honduras over the 2019 Easter break on a mission trip with Soles 4 Souls. The organization creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. It began in 2006 and has distributed over 35 million pairs of shoes in 127 different countries.

Assistant cheer leading coach Maria DuPont was one of the staff members that traveled to the Central American country. She spoke about what an eye opening experience it was saying, “It makes you take a step back, look at your own life, and realize everything that you take for granted.”

The Notre Dame group’s main role in Honduras was to visit schools and fit students with a pair of shoes. Victoria Mazzie said, “Seeing the smile on the children’s faces was

great to see. They were so happy to receive the shoes as they had to walk a long way to get to their school.”

The group also visited a malnutrition center to distribute diapers, wipes, and toys to the children. Bethany Knight said, “It was sad to see the children like that. We were

told the main cause of malnutrition was the lack of education that the parents had. They were spending what little they had on poor quality food items.”

In a discussion with Erin Frosch, Carmela Lilly, and Abigail Lanham, the students all agreed that the trip to Honduras gave them a different perspective on their own lives. “It made us appreciate small things and be more grateful. The people in Honduras have to work so hard for the things that we think are normal.”

DuPont graduated from Notre Dame in 2012 and then went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Duquesne University. She is currently finishing the internship section of her Master’s degree in school counseling under another Notre Dame graduate, and current school counselor, Becky Korn.

DuPont said, “I’m excited to be back where everything started and eager to work with the students. I’m hoping to become a role model for them, like my teachers were for me.”

In May, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers-Eastern Section selected Dr. Angela McKeen as the 2019 Outstanding Earth Science Teacher. OEST awards are given for “exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth Sciences at the pre-college level.” Dr. McKeen’s dedication to improving all science education throughout the diocese, the state, and the nation is reflected in her work both inside and outside of the classroom.

“Students learn complex Earth Science content best if they are engaged in the science, invested in their education, but above all else, they learn most readily when they feel cared

for inside the classroom. Anyone can make science difficult for students. My job is to teach the students where they are and to make the complex understandable to all.”

Dr. McKeen has presented at state, national, and international science conferences since 1995. She has trained pre-service teachers, professors, k-12 educators, and administrators throughout the state as well as at Johns Hopkins University through the Maryland Higher Education Consortium. She has been the West Virginia State Councilor for NAGT-Eastern Section for the past ten years. She has served on the West Virginia Science Teachers Association executive board for the past four years. She will be honored in Harper’s Ferry, WV, in June at the NAGT-Eastern Section meeting. She will also be honored in Boston, MA, at the National Science Teachers Association national conference in April 2020 at the “Friends of Earth Science” reception.
