Working together to support our people.

Our own employees play a vital role in our success and so we continue to invest in their development, ensuring they’re equipped with the right skills to deliver the high levels of service our customers have come to expect from us.

A change in the regulatory environment for all European insurers (Solvency II) has acted as a catalyst for introducing new governance and risk management structures. But it’s important that we do this in a way that ensures we continue to provide the best possible products and services for our policyholders.

We also know how important it is to our customers that we fulfi l our role as a not for profi t organisation and, through our Charitable Trust, we continue to make donations to support the NHS and medically related charities.

We recognise that we need to be ready for tomorrow’s world and this is refl ected in our charitable giving.

This year, the trust pledged more than £550,000 to a number of charities, including Age UK Sheffi eld, Macmillan Cancer Support, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and St Luke’s Hospice to help enhance end of life care.

We’re also committed to supporting longer term projects such as campaigns to open a new cancer research unit at Sheffi eld’s Weston Park Hospital and to install important medical equipment at the Children’s Hospital, Sheffi eld.

It is a matter of great pride to us that we have supported the Westfi eld Health British Transplant Games since 2008 and we’re pleased to have committed to supporting the event until 2016.

Our support for the British Transplant Games refl ects our ethos of corporate responsibility. We feel it is tragic that, in today’s society, there are still three people dying every day while waiting for an organ transplant. The Games play a vital role in showcasing the benefi ts of transplantation and helping to grow the number of registered organ donors.

Being a good corporate citizen, while off ering excellent service and innovative health cover, maintains customer loyalty and enables us to achieve sustainable growth.

Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Jill Davies, and her executive management team, we’ve achieved more than ever this year.

Our employees have worked hard to bring new innovations and deliver outstanding customer service, making this our best year ever.

I’d also like to recognise the wise counsel of our Non Executive Directors, who will play a signifi cant role in our new governance structures in the future. And this year we welcomed two new Board members – Philip Gregory and David Palmer.

In the years to come, we’ll always work as one team to support our people and our communities and to drive our organisation forward.

Graham MooreChairman

All businesses have to adapt according to the changing world we live in, and Westfi eld Health is no diff erent. In the past 12 months, we’ve invested signifi cantly in preparing our organisation for the future and creating a new brand that brings together our beliefs and values, and defi nes the way we want to work with our staff and our customers.

Being a good corporate citizen, while off ering excellent service and innovative health cover, maintains customer loyalty and enables us to achieve sustainable growth.

08 Chief Executive | Jill Davies 09

We’re proud to say that in 2013/14 we’ve won more awards than ever before and we’ve retained our world class customer service excellence rating once again.

This has been a year to be proud of, but our success would not have been possible without our hardworking team, our Board and the support of our Chairman, Graham Moore.

As we embark on a new year, we look forward to living the brand and building on our achievements of the past year to continue to grow the business. As always, we endeavour to lead the way in the marketplace, supporting the NHS and communities we serve while delivering excellence, value and sustainability in our products and services to help people stay at their healthy best.

Jill Davies Chief Executive

But one thing remains constant – our commitment to keeping our customers at the heart of everything we do.

And we’re proud to say that our customers have continued to reward us with their loyalty and support, helping us to have our best year yet.

Once again, we’ve surpassed the targets we set ourselves and we’re now helping more people than ever to enjoy a healthy life with the highest number of policyholders in our history.

Our new brand has helped us to achieve this, by placing more focus on the core values at the centre of our organisation; Courage, One Team, Respect and Excellence. These values have been embraced right throughout the business, from the Board to the staff , and are already fi rmly embedded in our culture, helping us to deliver excellence to our customers.

Thanks to our comprehensive research and by listening to our customers and taking their feedback on board, our rebrand was an overwhelming success.

And this success contributed to Westfi eld Health being awarded the prestigious Investors in People (IIP) Gold status – a proud achievement. This is testament to our commitment to treating our staff and our customers in a way that refl ects the values of the business.

In 2013, we launched hospital treatment insurance – a pioneering product that is bridging the gap between health cash plans and private medical insurance. In a world where people are living longer, the NHS is changing and public demand for healthcare services is growing, this shows that we’re setting the bar high for our sector and delivering tomorrow’s products, today.

Building on almost a century’sexperience, we’re able to ensure that our products deliver better value for our loyal customers, some of whom have been with us for generations. And in 2013, we enhanced the most popular benefi ts on our core health plans – Advantage and Good4you.

This year, we’ve invested signifi cantly in key projects including our search for a new home in the city, our IT infrastructure and our new administration system. And, as well as introducing new corporate governance and risk committee structures in preparation for Solvency II, we’ve made a substantial investment in training and development, and we’ve also introduced a new, comprehensive reward and pay structure for our employees.

The past year has been a period of substantial change at Westfi eld Health, during which we have achieved outstanding results. From launching our bold new brand to undertaking a comprehensive review of our people strategy and adding value to our harder working health cover, it has been a challenging but extremely rewarding 12 months.

In what has been another record breaking year, premium income has increased beyond expectation thanks to fantastic account management and organic growth, and we’re delighted to have achieved new policy sales of nearly 77,000, taking our number of policies across the UK to more than 420,000 – a fantastic feat in today’s competitive marketplace.

We’re immensely proud of our new brand, which gives us the platform to communicate our values and organisational goals more eff ectively, both internally and externally. It’s modern, bold, and it sets us apart from the competition, enabling us to better communicate our unique proposition, which now includes the award winning hospital treatment insurance.

We’re committed to sharing our successes with our staff and our new brand has inspired us to develop a robust internal communications strategy, meaning our employees are now better informed than ever before and truly feel part of one team.

External communication is also vital to maintain and grow the reputation of our business, and the new brand has acted as a catalyst for changing the way we talk to our customers and the media.

and we also accepted the prize for Healthcare and Wellbeing Provider of the Year at the Workplace Savings and Benefi ts Awards 2013.

As well as receiving two accolades atthe Cover Excellence Awards 2013 – Best Service and Best Cash Plan Provider – and the Best Cash Plan Provider trophy at the Corporate Adviser Awards 2014, we’re delighted to say that our hospital treatment insurance won the Most Innovative New Product award at the Health Insurance Awards 2013.

We’re proud of all we’ve achieved this year and excited about what’s to come in the next 12 months as we move forward with courage to promote our innovative and evolving proposition of harder working health cover to ensure that we keep our customers and employees happy and healthy.

Paul Shires Executive Director, Sales and Marketing

By positioning ourselves as an industry thought leader and shouting louder about our successes in the media, we’ve reached more than 25,669,000 people through our PR activity.

The hard work we put into developing innovative products is evident this year too, with hospital treatment insurance growing consistently and accounting for over a quarter of new business through our direct sales channel.

In 2013/14 we identifi ed a need to add value to our core consumer and voluntary health plans, and customers can now claim more towards the cost of eye care, dental treatment and dental trauma.

Despite raising premiums for the fi rst time in four years to manage the benefi t increase, our customers say our products are now even better value.

This positive feedback is reinforced by our impressive list of award wins this year, acknowledging our service, our innovation and our position as a leading health insurer.

Our team’s approach this year was to develop our brand, products and relationships to achieve growth and customer value. And, with more people than ever using our harder working health cover to access and pay for their healthcare, we’ve accomplished our goals.

We now have more than 420,000 policies in place throughout the UK, generating £55.7million in premium income – a 2.4% increase on last year. Our approach to pricing is focused on delivering sustainable customer value, based on our unparalleled experience and insightful research. To ensure that we continue to create the relevant products and services that customers need, we have combined our product development and pricing teams and added to our analytical capability.

Our commitment to increasing the value our customers receive is demonstrated by the 7.6% increase in claims paid to £38.5million. Our proposition also includes valuable services including scanning, DoctorLine™ and Westfield Rewards. Because we cover more than 400,000 people, we have the scale to negotiate the very best rates possible for these services, increasing the value we can provide for our customers beyond the cost of claims paid.

Preparing for the future is essential for the continued success of our business.

It’s been another year of progress for Westfield Health. Our premium income has increased, the number of people we’re serving is higher than ever and we’re investing in the business to ensure this success continues.

Preparing for the future.

12 Executive Director – Finance | Rob Evans 13

2013/14 has seen us take major steps forward in creating the infrastructure to support our aspirations for growth.

We’re investing significantly in the development of a replacement administration system, which will go live in 2015. This new system will benefit our customers by enabling us to bring new products and services to market quickly and operate more efficiently. We also began the project to replace our IT infrastructure, which will provide the platform for our new system and enable us to develop and grow.

These investments, as well as the new head office we’ve purchased, are funded by drawing on our substantial reserves. This investment is vital to maintain and develop our business and ensure we offer the best value to our customers in the long term. It does mean that we have made a modest operating deficit this year and this is likely to continue in the coming years. Our levels of solvency increased over the year and far exceed what we’re required to hold by the regulator.

Annual Review 2013/2014

From our very beginnings in 1919, we’ve always been committed to effective and efficient governance. The regulatory environment has changed with the establishment of the PRA and FCA and it will continue to evolve with the implementation of Solvency II in 2016. We have responded by implementing a new committee structure and risk management process that conforms with the requirements of regulators, but also ensures that our customers’ best interests are central to all of our decisions.

These are exciting times for our organisation. Our results from 2013/14 reinforce our position as a market leading health insurer and give our customers the confidence that we are operating in an ethical and sustainable way to deliver a healthier future for all.

Now serving more policyholders than ever before, we’ve processed a record 679,950 claims in an average time of just 1.98 days.

As the number of incoming calls reached more than 192,500 last year, we were always able to ensure that our customers didn’t have to wait long, with calls being answered by our customer care team within an average of 14 seconds. Ninety six per cent of calls were also resolved fi rst time and aside from the outstanding performance of our customer care team, we’ve also been working hard to support our staff and motivate them to continually deliver excellent service.

This has contributed to our achievement of the Investors in People (IIP) Gold accreditation, a standard held by just 3.5% of companies in the UK. This places us among some of the top businesses in the country and demonstrates that we’re operating at the very highest levels of people management.

We’ve also worked hard to develop a new reward strategy, which is aligned to our corporate goals and continues to refl ect our commitment to employee wellbeing. Employee engagement will continue to be a major focus as we build on our IIP Gold status.

Our dedication to our staff and todelivering exceptional customer service is refl ected in the awards and accreditations we’ve received in2013/14. The Institute of CustomerService has once again rated us ‘world class’ with a score of 83.8.

We’ve also achieved a Net Promoter Score of 70.07. As a score of 50 is deemed ‘excellent’ in this measurement of customer loyalty, we’re really proud to have been ranked so highly.

We’re also thrilled to have won theExcellence in Customer Service accoladeat the Sheffi eld City Region BusinessAwards, beating tough competitionfrom across South Yorkshire. We’re alsodelighted to say that our work to reducehealth insurance fraud was recognisedby the Health Insurance Counter FraudGroup when we were named Cash PlanFraud Company of the Year.

We’re committed to ensuring that we continue to off er our customers world class service by being creative and innovative in the way we deliver our service proposition.

One of the most exciting developments this year has been the purchase of our new headquarters, which we hope to move into in early 2016 following an extensive refurbishment.

We started life in Sheffi eld almost a century ago and, despite growing into a national organisation, the city is our home and our roots are fi rmly embedded here. This major investment reinforces our commitment to Sheffi eld, keeping our headquarters accessible for our customers and playing an integral part in the regeneration of the city centre.

Our new brand is built around the ethos of ‘working harder’ for our customers and our staff . We are living the brand and making positive changes to ensure we grow our business and keep providing our customers with the health cover they need.

So there are exciting times ahead and we’re very much looking forward to celebrating our centenary in 2019 in our new home.

We have been looking for a product that could fill the gap between private medical insurance and cash plans. We needed a cost effective and innovative solution for our clients.

Hospital treatment insurance has enabled us to offer a product that focuses on the health and wellbeing of employees without the financial burden that other healthcare products can carry. We have been able to assist our clients to broaden their healthcare offering and, in turn, our own prospective client base.Consultant at LEBC Group Ltd Stella Trussler

Westfield Health came highly recommended and is nationally well respected. When I looked into the service it was just what we were looking for. We wanted an employee healthcare benefit that was good value for money and it fitted nicely with our new sickness policy.

Joining Westfield Health has opened the doors for us to engage more with our staff about their health and wellbeing.

HR Manager at Sensible Home FinanceGeorge Wragg

Don’t just take our word for it.Here’s just some of the fantastic feedback from our customers over the past year.

Employees really value the package of benefits and entitlements from Westfield Health. It seems everyone has a story about how they, or someone they work alongside, has benefited.

Helping to keep a workforce fit and healthy has obvious benefits to an employer, in terms of reduced sickness absence and better performance, and our Westfield Health membership has also had a considerable positive impact on employees.

17Annual Review 2013/2014

I was involved in a road traffic accident and my right leg was badly injured. I was able to see a consultant and have an MRI scan very promptly, subsequently having a brace fitted to my leg for seven months and undergoing physiotherapy for 18 months. Without my Westfield Health cover, I would have had to wait longer for the MRI scan and then wait to see a consultant.Branch Manager at J Hatty Insurance

Without specialist treatment from the chiropractor, I would still be experiencing the excruciating pain in my back that I had put up with for more than 10 years of my life.

Being able to receive quick and easy treatment gave me drive to get my back pain dealt with quickly – something that probably wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t have the health cash plan.

Tax and Benefits Advisor at Advice NI Jennie Hammond

The feedback from staff has been brilliant. They’ve told us how simple and efficient they find Westfield Health’s claims process.

Westfield Health has provided us with a better value healthcare package for employees and, due to its simplicity, staff are largely able to manage it themselves.

The plan has allowed us to provide healthcare access for everyone, while keeping our costs down – which is of course important for any business.

befriending service ‘Two’s Company’ to help the charity tackle loneliness and its associated health issues among the elderly.

And we made one of our biggest ever donations to The Children’s Hospital Charity, giving £250,000 towards the Make it Better appeal, which aims to raise funds to dramatically improve

the Children’s Hospital, as well as a further £50,000 to enable the hospital to purchase a specialist gene sequencer. We’ve also continued our support of the Do Your Bit campaign, to raise money for a state of the art cancer research and treatment suite at Sheffi eld’s Weston Park Hospital, rounding off our record £300,000 donation with the fi nal instalment of £46,000.

One of our biggest charitable projects this year was the Westfi eld Health British Transplant Games. We were delighted to welcome the Games, which we’ve supported since 2008, to our hometown of Sheffi eld and to have our Chairman, Graham Moore, selected as the Chair of the Games local organising committee. Under Graham’s leadership, our team really got behind the Games and worked hard to raise the profi le of not only the event itself, but also the important message that more organ donors are needed to save lives.

Through the Gift of Life campaign, which aimed to add an additional 12,000 names to the NHS Organ Donor Register by the time the Games took place in August 2013, we urged people across South Yorkshire to sign up and share their wishes with their loved ones. Before the Games weekend, it was announced that more than 22,000 people had become organ donors during the campaign, which was a truly incredible achievement.

We’ve since pledged to support the event for the next three years. Our involvement with projects such as the British Transplant Games really sums up what we’re all about at Westfi eld Health. We constantly strive to go above and beyond in all we do to make our customers and employeesproud to be with us on our journey.

And we’ll continue to donate to national and local charities, helping out wherever we can and working harder to nurture the health and wellbeing of communities across the UK.

As a not for profi t company, we’ve always believed in giving something back to the communities we work in. And with the NHS facing increasing pressures and charitable donations more essential than ever, our support can be invaluable.
