Dear ACUHO‐I Foundation Friends, Major Donors, Vendors, and Supporters:  I am delighted to be serving as the Foundation Chair during this, our 25th anniversary year! My thanks to Gary Bice and the 25th Anniversary committee for helping us celebrate this momentous occasion.   We have many good people working hard on our fundraising that supports the work that we do on our campuses and businesses. We are continuing to shape the vision that we developed last year: “To ensure that every person has access to resources of the campus housing profession and is inspired to invest in its future.”  Furthermore, the mission 

statement, “Investing in people who make a difference in the campus housing profession worldwide” keeps us focused and motivated on the work in which we are engaged.  Let me share some updates with you from the first quarter of 2013:  Fundraising: We are hoping to hit a major milestone this year: $2 million in assets! Have you made a donation yet? If not, please consider the $25 for 25 campaign or the CHO challenge, or go big and become a Major Donor!  Lori Patterson (lorp@lsu.edu), our Major Donor chair, will happily answer your questions or sign you up as a Major Donor.  Parthenon Award: The champions are getting close to their fundraising goals for their nominees, but some are not quite there yet. I love to hear from ACUHO‐I members that want to support these well deserving colleagues. If you would like to know who has been nominated, please email me and I will be happy to share the secret with you.   Annual Giving Levels:  Our Annual Giving chair, Terri Gray, and her committee have been busy putting together this newsletter and thinking creatively about new annual giving levels. This will help us recognize lifetime giving to the Foundation.  Annual Conference & Exposition:  I am deeply honored and excited to have the opportunity to introduce the past Foundation Board chairs at the upcoming Annual Conference & Exposition in Minneapolis, MN on June 16. And wait until you see the wonderful Silent Auction items we will have at the Foundation Booth! Brooke Daniel, the Silent Auction chair, is providing some highlights in this newsletter. Of course, we welcome additional donations for the Auction! Please contact Brooke for more information.  Facebook: Join us in reaching 2,500 likes by the start of ACE (June 15).  Encourage your friends and colleagues to “like” the Foundation Page and be kept up to date on the happenings of your Foundation.  Angela Powell, our ACE Chair, has included additional info in this newsletter.

 Corporate:  Ryan Majeres (Corporate Committee chair) and Rich DeShields are working with the Corporate Task Force that is looking at a corporate stewardship plan, bringing in new corporate members, giving levels, primary managers, and naming opportunities.  SOPs: The Foundation Board has been working on creating Standard Operating Procedures so the work of the Foundation can continue long after we leave the Board (or if all of us are kidnapped by aliens).  As of early April, we are close to finishing the Regional Cabinet SOP as well as a position description for the Regional Cabinet.   Foundation Ambassadors: These are past members of the Foundation Board that remain involved in helping us with fundraising, working at the Booth at ACE, and serve as a sounding board to the current Foundation Board. Our Past Chair, Alan Nordyke, has been communicating regularly with them to keep them apprised of our work.  Diversity:  It has been a goal of the Foundation to increase the diversity of our Board members as well as the recipients of awards (such as the Parthenon and the Foundation of Excellence). We are seeking individuals that would like to work with the Board who are from under‐represented groups. We are also trying to obtain advice and input from ACUHO‐I members as to how we can achieve better diversity. If you have suggestions, thoughts, or advice to share, please contact me. I welcome the opportunity to engage in this dialogue.  In closing, the Foundation means a great deal to me, primarily because the work that our Board does supports our colleagues. That support is incredibly important to me. As some of you know, I am a breast cancer survivor and last year, I had surgery to remove a brain tumor (fortunately, it was benign).   I cannot tell you how many colleagues from around the globe sent me supportive emails and cards, called me, offered to come to Southern Maryland to drive me to my treatments or make meals for my family, helped me with my workload at my institution and my work with professional organizations such as MACUHO and ACUHO‐I, etc. These colleagues/friends gave me the energy I needed to fight the good fight. The Foundation is personal to me. I want and need to provide support to my colleagues/friends so we can all continue to do the important work that we do on our campuses, for our students, and for each other.   Giving to the Foundation feels good, just like getting that uplifting email, phone call, or offer of assistance. Please join me by donating to the Foundation.  Thank you!  Joanne Goldwater, St. Mary’s College of Maryland ACUHO‐I Foundation Chair

I “Like” the ACUHO‐I Foundation! 

 

In celebration of 25 years, an ACUHO‐I Foundation “Like” Facebook campaign was launched April 1, 2013.  The goal is to reach 2,500 “likes” by the beginning of the ACE conference ‐ June 15 in Minneapolis, MN.   

 ACUHO‐I members are encouraged to participate and to forward a message to their friends and colleagues asking them to “like” the Foundation Page ‐  while also enjoying updates made by ACUHO‐I and the Foundation team.   We also want to recognize the many contributions of colleagues and you will see opportunities to post about those you support, honor and remember. We know we have a ways to go, so don’t be foolish – visit and “like” the Foundation page at http://www.facebook.com/acuhoifoundation today.  

 

YOUR INVESTMENT IN ACTION: PARTHENON AWARD: 

The Parthenon Award is the ACUHO‐I Foundation’s most prestigious award 

and recognizes outstanding service, leadership, and contributions to the field 

of campus housing. When honorees are recognized at the ACUHO‐I 

conference, it is one of the most moving moments of the event.  

Nominees have been chosen for 2013, and pledges are being collected, but it's 

not too early to begin thinking of nominees to be recognized for 2014. 

The nomination process is simple. Write a letter of nomination highlighting the nominee's accomplishments and 

relevant information as well as the name of who is championing the nomination. 

Submit this to the ACUHO‐I central office before October 1 and you will receive a response in early November. If 

the nominee is selected, the champion then begins collecting at least $2,500 due before May 1.  Don't forget that 

all nominees are kept top secret until they are unveiled at the conference.

 Several new campaigns are currently underway in celebration of the Foundation’s 25 

years:  the CHO Challenge, the 25 for 25 Campaign and One‐Time 25th Anniversary Gift.

CHO Challenge 

All CHOs have been asked to participate in the “CHO Challenge,” which asks each CHO to have their campus’ entry‐

level staff to donate $25 to the ACUHO‐I Foundation, or to at least achieve 25% participation from entry‐level, mid‐

level and higher staff.   

 

The entry‐level staff significantly benefit from monies that the Foundation provides to sponsor participation in 

ACUHO‐I Internship program, Region’s Best, and for mid‐level staff, NHTI, on‐line webinars, speakers at 

conferences, and so much more.  If at least 25% of ACUHO‐I member institutions participate in the CHO Challenge, 

over 1,400 entry‐level staff will have contributed or $35,000 will be donated! The challenge runs through 2013. 

 

25 for 25 Campaign  

As the ACUHO‐I Foundation prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, we have an opportunity to reflect on how 

the Foundation has supported so many programs, projects, and awards for ACUHO‐I and its members throughout 

the years, and how you can "Invest in you!" The ACUHO‐I Foundation has launched the $25 for 25 Campaign. 

Pledge $25 a month from 25 months for a total of $625 as a way to invest in yourself, your profession, and 

celebrate the work of the Foundation.

Campaign.  Kari Talik, Southeast Missouri University was our first “institutional” individual 25 for 25 donor, 

followed by Michael Schultz of Southern Illinois University‐Edwardsville, who was our first CHO to donate.

If one has the means to invest in higher education, then one should do so. It is vital to invest in 

the future of the industry which has provided me with the means to support my family. 

“Giving” provides opportunity for others to chase their dreams, to possibly reach greatness. 

  

ACUHO‐I is genuine in the way its leaders seek out donors and thank them personally for their support. Nothing 

motivates me to give more as feeling appreciated and acknowledged for the support I provide. The culture 

ACUHO‐I has created for the fraternity of vendors who give consistently could be used as a case study in how to 

seek loyal donors. Providing real life examples illustrated through  vehicles such as the Talking Stick showing how 

donations fund initiatives such as  scholarships or research key to the continued improvement of student housing 

has always validated my financial commitment to ACUHO‐I.   

Creating a dynamic residence life environment takes work.  It requires passion and it needs commitment.   

ACUHO‐I, through its education programs and robust network, delivers on its mission to help grow future industry 

leaders. I am proud to share that passion and extend my financial commitment to ACUHO‐I to help support these 

critical endeavors.

I Became a 25 for 25 Donor Because: 

I believe in the Foundation and the Association. The Foundation has given me the opportunity to 

be an ACUHO‐I Housing Intern. By being an Intern Alumni I can share my experience and 

opportunities with incoming young professional who I mentor. From my internship experience, I found myself 

returning back to Southeast Missouri State University (internships host site) after 8 years of being away to work 

professionally as a member of the Residence Life Leadership team.

In addition to just the internship experience there are so many more ways that can benefit ourselves and others by 

donating. My involvement within the Association has provided me with mentors, colleagues, friends, and 

opportunity to continue developing both personally and professionally.  I decided it was time that I take my 

contributions to the next level, to honor my mentors and for the future of the Foundation and Association.

Giving to the ACUHO‐I Foundation is all about creating new initiatives and sustaining those 

efforts.  Without the ACUHO‐I Foundation, the seed money for new initiatives like the 

Credentialing program would not be possible.   In the financial environment that we are in now, 

travel resources and professional development are getting more restricted.   

 

The opportunities that we have within ACUHO‐I like NHTI, CHO institute, Credentialing and STARS are all about 

developing our staff and profession.  If they are not affordable or accessible the quality that we provide to our 

students will not be there.  To sustain our profession is another reason that I give to the ACUHO‐I Foundation.  It is 

not always about the amount of money that you give, it is that you invest something in our profession that is 

important.

2013 ACUHO‐I Annual Conference & Exposition 

The 2013 ACUHO‐I Annual Conference & Exposition, to be held June 15‐18 in Minneapolis, MN, is filled with amazing sessions and great networking opportunities. It's also a fantastic opportunity for the Foundation to connect with colleagues and supporters in a number of different ways.   This year we will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the ACUHO‐I Foundation! Please make sure you are there and that you stop by the Foundation Booth, located in the Minneapolis Convention Center, to bond with friends and colleagues, submit your annual pledge, or bid in the exciting silent auction.
