Surprisingly good career prospectsSince the last Investment Banking Fair at UCL it has been a pretty rocky ride for any graduate looking for a job and, of course, Investment Banking has been as affected as any sector. However, not everything is as negative as you read in the press.

It is true that places on Graduate Schemes have been cut over the last academic year, with the AGR winter report finding a 5.4% decrease in all vacancies in 2009 across all sectors and a massive 28% decrease in Investment Banking/Fund Management.

With this in mind you are probably wondering why companies are even bothering to attend the Investment Banking Fair this year, and it is a fair question.

The simple answer is that despite these massive decreases in vacancies, there are still opportunities out there for people looking to work in Investment Banking. Yes, there may not be the volume of business, and roles, at the moment but eventually a new equilibrium will be restored to the markets and Investment Banks, along with other organisations, will need to be ready to react.

In previous economic downturns many organisations completely halted their graduate recruitment activity only to realise a few years down the line that they had lost an entire generation of workforce and future business leaders. If you can secure a role in an Investment Bank in a downturn, and make a success of it, in years to come this could be a huge asset. You will have experienced what it is like to be at the sharp end of a downturn and seen it through, making your knowledge potentially very sought after.

Over the page is a ‘timetable to success’ which should give you a framework on how to secure that job.

What is Investment Banking? The term ‘investment banking’ does not have a precise definition; in fact it is not even a single career. Within investment banking there are lots of different specialisms, career paths and even various names for divisions and products.

In a nutshell, Investment Bankers assist clients to achieve their strategic and financial objectives by offering them a wide range of sophisticated financial services. These may include the raising of capital, delivering risk management solutions and offering mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advice. Most investment banks also have a fixed income and an equities division. Investment banking roles can be found within full-service Investment Banks such as Deutsche Bank, and Credit Suisse or smaller, boutique businesses that may specialise in a particular business area such as Liquid Capital Group.

A career in investment banking is truly global, with London being one of the key hubs for business. Generally starting as analysts, graduates are given plenty of responsibility and are required to work with clients throughout the world, including governments, corporations and other financial institutions as well as professional investors (e.g. fund managers). However, Investment Banking remains highly competitive. Student research company High Fliers puts the number of applicants per job at 60:1. Therefore, if you are considering a career in Investment Banking, start preparing early. The key to gaining employment is to demonstrate and develop the key skills that employers require.

“In previous economic downturns many organisations completely halted their graduate recruitment activity, only to realise a few years down the line that they had lost an entire generation of workforce and future business leaders”.

Your Timetable to success: a plan of action for securing a graduate job in investment bankingCompetition for graduate trainee roles in investment banking is fiercer than ever before.

Now, as well as being a potentially lucrative career choice, the headcount of intake has been greatly reduced across the sector. This means that roles that attracted around 100 candidates per position before the start of the economic downturn can expect this figure to rocket over the coming recruitment round and don’t forget, if the bank is happy to apply for work permits, you will also be competing with the best applicants globally.

The next couple of pages are aimed at giving you a framework to securing a career in Investment Banking.

Entry Criteria and their implications for your time at UniversityIt isn’t essential to have a degree in finance and economics to enter the industry, but you will have a number of steep academic hurdles to vault: you will usually need to achieve at least a 2:1, have a consistently high level of academic performance throughout your degree and often have achieved a certain number of UK ‘A level’ UCAS points or the equivalent qualification in your home country.

In addition to excellent academic performance, applicants for graduate roles in banking will be assessed for a variety of essential competencies needed to perform successfully in the role. Typically these include: strong

numerical and analytical skills, team working and leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, project and time management, motivation and commitment, self confidence and the ability to work under pressure, as well as a demonstrable interest in the relevant business area.

Evidence that you possess many of these skills can be gained from your degree but, unfortunately, that is not enough and for certain criteria, such as business acumen, evidence must be developed elsewhere. This is why, if you are determined to work in investment banking, it is vitally important to gain relevant work experience, in addition to other extra-curricular activities, throughout your time at University.

Your first yearThis is an ideal time to start doing some basic research on the sector, start familiarising yourself with the big players and their graduate schemes and start to develop knowledge and interest in the financial markets. Attend careers events, workshops and presentations attended by financial employers. Come to the careers library and browse our occupational profiles and literature on Investment Banking and the financial sector in general. Get involved in extra-curricular activities that will start to build your competencies e.g. by joining UCL’s Investment Banking and Economics & Finance Societies.

Some Investment banks are now offering taster days for first year undergraduates where you can find out more about the organisation and the roles on offer and some banks offering one or two week long internships. Details of these can be found on most company websites and on websites like www.efinancialcareers.com. Towards the end of your first year you’ll need to start finding out where and when internships and formal work experience placements with the Investment banks will appear so you can get your application in as soon as possible in the Autumn term of your second year. In addition, try to get useful work experience over the summer period so you have something to put in your internship application!

Your second year and InternshipsInternships are pretty crucial to the recruitment process. Most banks will admit that the majority of their full time hires come straight from the penultimate year Internship Programme, so securing a place on one is highly recommended!

Internships tend to be open only to second year undergraduates and take place in the Summer between years two and three. Typically, a Summer internship will last eight to twelve weeks. You will be given real tasks, projects and objectives. In some cases you may be rotated around different divisions / departments. You will usually be assigned a mentor and / or manager to oversee this process. Internship vacancies are being advertised as I write this in August 2009 and closing dates for applications range from early December to mid January. The application process usually consists of a mixture of online applications, tests e.g. for numeracy and interviews and the entry criteria as are tough as those for graduate vacancies.

The purpose of such placements is to allow you to gain key insights and experience in that role and organisation. However, banks are using Internships to assess your future ability to work for them after you graduate. Commonly 50% or more of students who obtained an Internship with an Investment bank are offered a full-time graduate vacancy at the end of their tenure, although this year will see a drop in these figures at some organisations.

As securing an Internship is increasingly seen as a fast track to a graduate job in Investment banking, competition for Internships is becoming as fierce as that for graduate roles. Thousands of applications for a single place is not uncommon and, this year, many organisations have cut their intern roles by as much as 30%.

Keep in mind however, that simply securing an Internship doesn’t guarantee you a future role. You will have to perform well at your allotted tasks and expect to be formally assessed during and at the end of your experience.

Career Timetable (cont’d)Career Timetable

Your Final Year – Navigating the application process for Graduate positionsThe final year contains a range of application hurdles you will need to overcome before you gain that final offer for a place on a graduate programme. Firstly, you will have to complete the company’s application form that will assess evidence of key skills and whether you meet the basic academic criteria. Again, applications open as early as the beginning of September, before the start of the University academic year. The closing dates for many full time hires are as early as 18 October this year, although some reach into January. Be aware that there is an ever increasing trend towards earlier advertising of graduate vacancies in Investment Banking, so future applicants may have to start preparing their applications near the end of the Summer vacation. You are strongly advised not to leave you application to the last minute; if you are serious about making a good application you will need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to filling it in.

If you are one of the minority of applicants that get through this first stage then you commonly face one or a number of ‘aptitude tests’, testing your numerical ability and also, in many cases, a test of your verbal ability.

If you are successful with your application and the tests (and only around 1 out of every 9 candidates are (www.efinancialCareers.com), then you will face a first round interview, where you can expect to be questioned on whether you have the core competencies required to work in investment banking. If you pass this successfully, you can expect to go on either a second round interview where senior staff of the company are likely to probe your technical knowledge, or (and in many cases, after) an assessment centre, commonly lasting a day, where you will be put through a battery of tests (typically group

discussions, presentations, aptitude tests and case study analysis).

Assessment centres and interviews traditionally take place early in the New Year and, if you are successful, then you can expect an offer before the Easter vacation. However, keep in mind that, due to the fluctuating business patterns affecting much of the sector, some offers are being delayed into the Summer Term.

Once the hard part of securing your job offer is over, all that’s left for you to do is pass your finals and achieve academic success!

Steven EdwardsProject Manager - Architecture & EngineeringMSc Computer Sciencewww.db.com/careers

Having attended a number of careers events where various banks were present, the thing that struck me most was the openness and approachability of the Deutsche Bank representatives. Like all potential employees, I researched the Bank prior to interview and was amazed when I realised the scope of the technology operation here. Considering the technology operation alone at Deutsche Bank, if it stood alone as a separate company it would be big enough to sit in the FTSE-100! Our technology budget runs into billions of Euros per annum, and we’re at the very cutting edge of technology.

The graduate scheme here is superb, as you get to experience different technologies and areas. Once I’d completed my graduate rotations, I took the opportunity of moving into a Project Management role. The level of responsibility I’m given provides a fantastic challenge. My daily work involves me working alongside global heads of engineering, and I never expected to be where I am today when I joined just a few years ago.

It’s a little strange to think that I left UCL less than three years ago as I now coordinate the UCL recruitment team for Deutsche Bank, and in February of this year actually hosted a lecture series in Financial Computing. I feel I have a great deal to thank UCL for, and am delighted to return to the University for regular recruitment events - please come and say ‘hello’ if you see me!

WouldIdoanythingdifferent?Never! It’sajoytocomeinto work each day and be surrounded by such talented, approachable people. I’ve worked in many organisations and none have come close to Deutsche Bank for the level of support, mentoring and development offered.

Anyadvice?ThethingthatgotmenoticedatUCLwasmy willingness to get involved in extra-curricular activities - show your willingness and ability to take responsibility, it will pay dividends when you come to apply!
