In 2012 the University of Kansas Cancer Center received the National
Cancer Institute (NCI) designation. This new NCI designation signifies
that KU’s academic cancer center has achieved the highest standards
provided in the country. There are only 27 NCI designated cancer
centers and 41 designated comprehensive cancer centers in the entire
country. NCI designation is expected to open doors to expanded
research funding as well as economic benefits and new jobs to the
metropolitan community.
The Kansas City community should also see a new level of excellence in
bioscience research which will allow the city to more fully leverage the
research investments made by both the University of Kansas and the
Stowers Institute for Medical Research. The University of Kansas
Hospital was already ranked among the country’s top academic centers
as noted in U.S. News & World Report for four years running, so the NCI
designation will be a great benefit to the community as a whole.
Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI), together with major life
science participants including the Kansas Bioscience Authority, Kansas
City Animal Health Corridor, Midwest Research Institute, national bio
and agri-defense and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research,
continues to lead Kansas City forward in the life sciences sector. The Life
Sciences industry in Kansas City will have nearly $1 billion dollars in
research expenditures placed over the next 10 years, elevating Kansas
City to one of the top three areas in Kansas City remains the center of
the animal health corridor. Since its launch in 2006, this corridor has
created over 1,450 jobs and over $1.3 billion dollars in capital
investment. The corridor, which stretches from Manhattan, Kansas to
Columbia, Missouri, continues to be the focus of growth and accounts
for nearly 34% of all sales in the global animal health market which
totals nearly $21 billion. Currently over 212 life science companies are
located in the Kansas City Metro area including leaders Bayer Animal
Health, Boehringer Ingelheim Vet Medica in St. Joseph, Cereal Food
Processors, Inc., Merck Animal Health, Ceva Biomune, Pfizer Animal

STOWERS INSTITUTE
Situated on the former campus of the Menorah Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, the 600,000-square-foot research facility wasthoughtfully designed to provide state-of-the-art laboratory space, equipment and technical support—but above all—to encouragecollaboration between scientists. In the year 2000, three years after breaking ground, the Stowers Institute opened its laboratory doorsto welcome the first generation of Stowers scientists. In 2009, the Institute added a 280,000-square-foot complex in South Kansas Cityto accommodate additional support functions and storage facilities.
Today, the institute houses 20 independent research programs and three technology development programs, including bioinformatics,
proteomics and imaging. Of the nearly 550 Institute members, 370 are scientific staff: principal investigators, technology centerdirectors, postdoctoral research associates and fellows, pre-doctoral research associates and technical support staff. As strong believersin endowment- based scientific research, the Stowers family endowed the institute with gifts totaling close to $2 billion. Their ultimate
goal was to free scientists from the pressures of securing their own funding and allowing them to solely focus their talent and energy onscientific research. In addition to thriving research programs and continued growth, the Stowers Institute launched a graduate trainingprogram in the fall of 2011.
