The new location allows us to offer a wide variety of options for holiday reservations, from full restaurant bookout, to tables of 10, 20, 30 or more. We have so much diversity down here.

There is the option for live entertainment for large bookings, we offer the only heated patio in town, and a separate pub atmosphere for when the ties come off and the hair comes down,” says manager, Matthew Driscoll.

With such promotions as the new “Wolfblass Wednesday” (great special prices on a great Australian product), and their “Lord of the Wings Night” (every Thursday, $4 wings, $16 buckets of bottled beer, and free live entertainment with Sean Roach & guest), Lemongrass and Peppers is quickly becoming the place to be on weekdays & weekends alike.

They also offer great free music shows on the weekends, which can be seen on their Peppers Pub Facebook group. Come to

enjoy live music, or simply to relax in the pub or on the patio. “Even this time of year, with the heaters on, the patio is often full

as well as the restaurant. It’s been a great fall,” notes Driscoll. Christmas is bound to be very kind to the folks visiting

Lemongrass & Peppers Pub this year. With great specials and friendly staff that serve you with a smile, you can’t go wrong!!!

Keep your eyes on these guys, with a new Lemongrass website on the way at www.lemongrassthaifare.com. You’ll be able to view their menu & events online, and if you’ve never been, you will see many pictures of their fantastic new atmosphere. Also, become a friend on Facebook and stay up to date on the coming attractions.

To make a reservation, or get more information, feel free to call them up at 506-657-8424. They are getting ready for a Merry Christmas and you should too!!!

I am a life-long Saint Johner. And although I have travelled from coast to coast to coast, I am always amazed at how much there is to do in Saint John. I lean towards sports and recreation for

my leisurely pursuits, but every day in the City I meet people and organizations who use their talents to bring music, art, dance, sports, culture, theatre, food, history and recreation to our citizens. I am thrilled to see a place where their hard work is celebrated and showcased.

If you’ve picked up this magazine you might be looking for something to do tonight. Or this weekend. Or next Thursday. You’ve come to the right place. If you’ve had a chance to flip through these pages, you already know, Saint John offers plenty of choice.

Invite magazine will highlight the people, businesses, organizations and events that make our City a great place to live and work. Where else could you take a guided kayak tour, eat freshly harvested seafood and attend a concert in a former vaudeville theatre within a half an hour’s drive? Or take your kids

skateboarding and quick stroll to a major junior hockey game? How about visiting the largest concentration of commercial art galleries in Atlantic Canada, then enjoying the cuisines of Germany, Thailand, India, Japan or Spain all in one night?

Voted as the “Happiest City in Canada” Saint John is home to many events where citizens come out to support each other and other citizens – Faces of Fusion, The St Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Dragon Boat, the Y’s Red Triangle Dinner have become staples in many of our citizens’ calendars.

Saint John has been designated a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2010, our City’s 225 anniversary. There will be many events and programs to celebrate and we know Invite magazine will be there.

This is my invitation to you. Enjoy everything this City has to offer. On behalf of Saint John Common Council and our citizens,

welcome and congratulations Invite magazine. We look forward to reading about what’s inviting here in Saint John.

Peter Buckland GalleryTOM SMITH: RAKUNANCY KING SCHOFIELD: A BIRD IN THE HAND

The Peter Buckland Gallery is pleased to present two exhibitions for the month of December. Tom Smith is one of New Brunswick’s senior artists, and was the second artist to be honoured with the prestigious Strathbutler Award (1992). Internationally recognized as an outstanding ceramic artist, Tom Smith’s work references Japanese folk pottery, 1950’s American abstract painting and constructivist sculpture. Since the early 1980’s he has focused on the techniques of raku, working more directly with the firing

process and exploring the myriad possibilities of glazing. Tom Smith’s Raku promises to be an outstanding exhibition. Our second exhibition this month is entitled A Bird in the Hand by Nancy King Schofield. A noted New Brunswick artist, Nancy was selected as one of the thirty most important New Brunswick painters (1970-2000) for the New Brunswick Museum’s exhibition/book, Portraits: New Brunswick Painters. The artist has created a wonderful new series of small paintings for this exhibition. These two exhibitions will open on December 5.

The Peter Buckland Gallery is located at 80 Prince William Street, in Saint John.

Trinity GalleriesSituated on beautiful, tree-lined Germain Street in the heart of Saint John, Trinity Galleries was established in 1995 by Beth McGloan Asimakos, who received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Trinity Galleries proudly represents some of the Maritime’s foremost artists. Floor to ceiling windows showcase the works of Mary Pratt, Barbara Pratt, David Silverberg, Peter Gough, Cheryl Bogart and others. Several talented up and coming artists are also featured, such as Amy Ash, Amy Dryer, and Michelle St. Onge. Two levels of beautifully restored gallery space are home to the works of Fine Craft artists, including the renowned couple, Istvan Zsako and Anna Torma, Rion McCroys, Kate Church and more. Come see what Trinity Galleries has to offer at our annual Christmas Small Works Show, Saturday, November 28th, from 10 am until 4 pm. The show continues until Christmas. An invitation to Saint John’s Visual ArtsWith the highest concentration

of art galleries in the Atlantic Provinces,

Saint John’s Uptown has become

a destination for artists, artisans and

antiquity dealers.

Four times a year, the galleries uptown host the Gallery Hop, an open house (and often an opening night) for their latest exhibitions, and a chance to take in the cultured side of

Saint John. The December Gallery Hop is a day-long event, with the

galleries open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 5. Many of the shows at the galleries are aimed at Christmas shoppers – small works perfect for gift giving.

The Gallery Hop first started over five years ago. Peter Buckland of the Peter Buckland Gallery suggested to Trinity Galleries and Handworks Gallery that a collective open night would be a big draw. The event has since evolved to include the public galleries, the Saint John Arts Centre, the Saint John Public Library’s Millennium Artplace, the City of Saint John Gallery and the New Brunswick Museum. Privately-owned galleries taking part include Citadel Gallery, Klausen Gallery and Tim Isaac Art and Antiques.

Each gallery has its own niche – Buckland focuses on contem-porary art from the Atlantic provinces and New England. Handworks Gallery focuses on New Brunswick crafts and artisans, while Tim Isaac Art and Antiques focuses on artworks of the past with connections to Saint John.

In 2010, Saint John will celebrate its 225 anniversary and has been designated as a Cultural Capital of Canada. With the wealth of events planned as part of the Original City celebrations, the Gallery Hop could be part of a larger event celebrating Saint John’s growing and eclectic arts community.

“It’s been a successful project,” says Bernard Cormier, the City of Saint John’s Cultural Affairs officer. “And there’s room for it to be much bigger in the future.”

The brew pub, which is located in the heart of Uptown Saint John, is housed in a building steeped in local history. The building was the site of the first law school in New

Brunswick – the Saint John School of Law. Although there have been many incarnations since that time, the unique character of the building has remained intact. High ceilings and ornate moldings are just some of the architectural features that add ambience to the pub. The décor offers warm, modern colors and a touch of the maritime roots for which the pub is named. Pub goers are also afforded an exclusive view of the city’s proud building history through a unique double window that opens to the sidewalk.

Of course, the heart of any successful brew pub is exceptional beer offerings. And this is certainly an area where Big Tide excels. The beer is crafted on-site under the watchful eye of Brewmaster

Wendy Papadopoulos, who has earned gold medals from the world beer cup and world beer championships. The brewing equipment is encased by a wall built of the original floor tresses. This “big wood”, as it has been nicknamed, is also the base for the “Big Wood Teaser”, a sample tray that allows patrons to try a smaller glass of each of four brews on tap. While beer on tap rotates to reflect the seasons and occasions, there are several regular staples which have become crowd favorites. Let Big Tide whet your thirst with Whistlepig Stout, a traditional dry stout with a nutty, chocolaty aroma and just the right balance of flavors. Or perhaps you’d prefer the light and refreshing taste of FogBound Hemp Pale Ale? This American style golden coloured ale offers hints of fruitiness balanced by nutty characteristics – a combi-nation that is sure to please. Benedict Arnold Extra Special Bitter,

After more than twenty years in the bar and restaurant business, Chris Vair

wanted to create a place where all people felt welcome to come in, relax, and

enjoy the beer and food. He envisioned a gathering place for family, friends,

coworkers, and strangers with lots of conversation, laughs, lively debates,

and great memories. Chris’ dream became reality when the Big Tide Brewing

Company started production in July, 2009.

Big Tide Brewing Company

Big Tide’s Chef, Tom MacArthur

Big Tide’s delicious Yorkshire Shepherd

Confederation Cream Ale, Celtic Mist Irish Red Ale, Seaworthy IPA, Indian Beach Nut Brown – these are just a selection of available brews. As the holiday season approaches, Big Tide is proudly preparing a special porter and scotch ale for the occasion. Whatever your desire, Big Tide is sure to have the brew for you.

Aside from its fine brew, Big Tide is quickly becoming known for its mouth-watering food menu, which offers fine dining quality in a comfortable pub atmosphere. Chef Tom MacArthur’s eclectic mix of standards and modern favorites offers something for even the most discriminating connoisseur. Big Tide’s lunchtime menu offers quality and value with efficient, friendly service. For dinner, Big Tide presents a variety of delicious choices, both traditional and unexpected.

Offering an irresistible selection of brews and menu items was simply not enough for Chris Vair. He wanted to create a pub atmosphere that was unique and encouraged friendship, laughter, good times, and maybe some friendly competition too! At Big Tide, you’ll find table tops with game boards laminated on them. Looking to play traditional favorites like Monopoly or Scrabble? How about chess, checkers, and maybe even snakes and

ladders? Or, perhaps you’d like to test your knowledge with trivial pursuit? Whatever your desire, boards and game pieces await you! For those looking to take their challenge to the next level, Pub Stumpers is for you.

Hosted every Tuesday night, this lively and highly

competitive trivia contest is a crowd favorite with beer,

nachos and other treats on the line. The Big Tide Brewing Company is

thrilled to be entering its fifth month of operation. In many ways, it is still a new pub

carving out its place in the city nightlife. But, in other ways, it seems like Big Tide has always been a part of the local landscape, welcoming people in for great beer, great food, and a great time. So if you’re looking for a relaxed, cozy space for drinking and dining, no matter the time of day or the occasion, then Big Tide is the place to be. We hope to see you soon!

Here are some valuable tips that will help you tell the difference between a low quality coat, and a high quality coat:

1) The most important tip is the actual garment. Look for a high quality wool or leather. Leather coats made out of cow or sheep are most common, but not necessarily the best – that title goes to lamb. Lamb leather is lighter and is more comfortable to wear. In addition, it has fewer crests/scratches on the skin, giving the leather a more uniform look. For wool coats, select one that has angora wool or a blend of cashmere. These types of wool increase warmth and comfort.

2) Look at the lining! 90% of people buying a coat will never notice or inspect the lining. But the lining tells a lot about the quality of the craftsmanship. A good lining indicates that “TLC” was used in creating the coat. Liners made out of “kasha” are excellent since they are durable and warm. If possible, stay away from cotton liners.

3) Where was the coat made? Ok, we are generalizing here, but 7 times out of 10, jackets made domestically in North America are better than Asian imports. Granted, they usually cost a little more due to the higher wages, but if you have any problems with your coat, it is much easier for the local manufacturer to help you out.

4) The finishing touches! Look at the buttons and/or zippers. Are they cheap looking or are they fancy with some design on them. In addition, look how the

buttons are fastened. These are additional clues that will let you know if the manufacturer took care in making his/her coat.

5) The stitching? The type of thread used in the stitching makes a world of difference. A low quality thread will eventually disintegrate and your jacket will start to rip.

6) Look at the manufacturer brand, and NOT the product brand. Most famous brand names have their products made by someone else in Asia. Therefore, it’s the manufacturer’s responsibility for the quality of the garment, not the brand company.

The next time you purchase a jacket or coat, remember to look up Frank’s Furs and Fashions – your coat and jacket expert!

Tips on Buying a Winter CoatWith the season’s changing, many of us are starting

to look for some kind of outerwear to help us stay

warm and fashionable. Whether you are looking for

a leather jacket or wool coat, the choices in the market

are plentiful. You can find pretty much any color, length,

and/or style to suit your taste, but what about the

quality? How can you tell if the jacket or coat you

want to buy is a quality garment?

www.advocateprinting.comHoliday Drink IdeasBy Gordon Johnson, General Manager, Sebastian

The holiday season is about spending

time with friends and family. Whether

you’re a seasoned entertainer

or starting a new tradition, mix up

your festivities with these holiday

drink ideas.

When designing your holiday cocktail menu, it’s important to consider the flavors, scents, and colors of the season. While the traditional rum and eggnog may be a familiar

standby, why not try spicing it up this year? A simple topping of whip cream sprinkled with nutmeg and garnished with a candy cane or cinnamon stick can add a new dimension to this favorite holiday drink. And don’t forget to serve your holiday cheer in a festive mug or glass. In my experience, the vessel can be just as important as the drink.

For those of you looking to try an easy and tasty holiday cocktail, consider the Christmas Martini. The scent of juniper is reminiscent of the Christmas tree, and the flavor of peppermint is strong enough to remind you of a candy cane; however, the essence of gin will let your guests know that this is definitely not candy.

Whether you’re relying on traditional favorites or trying something new, incorporating festive elements into your drink will have guests talking.

Christmas Martini RecipeTwo parts good quality gin to one part peppermint schnapps, shaken with ice and strained. You can also crush candy canes and rim the glass, however, I would cut down peppermint schnapps by half as you will pick up peppermint flavor on the rim.

Cheers.

Do you have a regular Monday to Friday 9-5?No this is it. It’s taken me a long time to get to this point. I used to have the 9-5 job. But over time I got enough weekly gigs that I could just be an artist.

And it’s comfortable?Yea its cool, I was able to find a way to pay rent and put food on the table. I’ve been low at times, but never broke. Mind you I’m not a rich man by any stretch. But I don’t care its fun.

How do you keep from getting burned out?He laughs; I AM burned out most times, but I look at how lucky I am to be able to do this. I learn songs as I go to stay fresh. I’ve played some songs to death but I’m always trying to learn new material so that keeps me going.

Do you prefer acoustic or electric?I love them both. When it’s electric, I’m playing with a band and that’s a blast. If it’s acoustic I play more mellow or emotional stuff. Playing with the band I get my aggression out on Sundays and I get my cries out with the acoustic the other nights.

Any plans on a Sean Roach record? YES! It’s almost done actually. I have 6 or 7 songs all recorded. Music is done. The photos are done and I have financial backing. I haven’t yet recorded the vocals; my voice is usually shot thru the week. So any night that I don’t have to sing, I take a break.

Is there a tentative album release date?I’ll have it ready by summer for next Cruise Ship season for sure.

Who’s on the album with you?Matt Benoit on drums, Tony Noddin on bass. I have Malcolm Boyce and Kevin Shephard each for a cut on drums. Steve Walsh and Jim Wilson came in and did some guitar work. Also a friend of mine named “Wah-Wah” Goguen came in and did a solo. I just play rhythm guitar and sing.

What makes it fun to be at open mic?Having people get up and play. One night we had Wild T, from Wild T and The Spirit get up and jam. The Sam Roberts guys

came in once. The Sled Dogs have also been there. I love it when a band comes in and jams with us.

What songs can still get you into the zone? Jeff Buckley’s version of Hallelujah still gets me. A Hawksley Workman tune called “Smoke Baby” is another. The crowd always likes that one.

What are you listening to lately?Lady Gaga, Mother Mother and I dig Ray Lamontagne.

What are the plans five years down the road?Well I hopefully I get that damn album done. (He laughs.)

What do you want to see in the music scene in SJ?Well, Akhord and Melvins are both closed. That hurt because they were great venues. Being an acoustic act because I have the option of just walking in to the smaller more intimate places, but I’d like to see another venue open up. That said, we’re still seeing a lot of people coming out to the open mic nights at O’Leary’s and Cougars. There’s always a new band that comes in. That’s how I got my start at O’Leary’s.

Do you remember what you sang?It was Disarmed by Smashing Pumpkins.

How long have you been singing? Started when I was 19, I was playing guitar in a band and the singer left and I thought, what do I do now? I taught myself to sing and I’m sure it was painful, but my friends encouraged me and I kept going.

How do you stay motivated on those nights when it’s just you and the bartender?I’ve had many nights like that. I just enjoy playing. I could do that easily, but it’s nice to have the mic and of course… Alpine Lager.

What would you say to people that say there is nothing to do in Saint John?Just Get Out There. I’ve never had trouble finding something to do, maybe it’s because I’m just out there. For those that are complaining, I don’t think they’re looking hard enough.•

Sean Roachby Dennis Hunt

Showcasing the talent of Saint John’s local musicians and bands.

Sean Roach is one of the hardest working musicians on the Saint John music scene.

I caught up with him at a coffee shop.

Hey Sean Welcome to Invite Magazine. What are you doing these days?I’m busy playing around town. I’m doing two shows at O’Leary’s, one at Peppers, one at Cougars and I run sound at O’Leary’s for Brent Mason. This summer I’ve Been playing the Cruise Ship beer tour around town. They’ll end up at O’Leary’s for a beer tasting. I’m there playing a few 45 minute sets of Irish songs for the cruise ship crowd. That tour group would leave and then I play another 45 min set of the same songs to a new crowd. I’ve been doing that for a few years now.

Is it still fun?Well Yea, its fun. I get to pay my rent with my guitar. It’s hard on the nights I’ve played at Cougars and then get up to sing sweet Irish ditties to the Americans at 10:30 the next morning… that can be tricky.

When newcomers drive into the parking lot of the Three Mile Entertainment Complex near the corner of Rothesay Avenue and McAllister

Drive, they are confronted with choices. There are four very different businesses from which to choose providing (like the saying goes) ‘something for everyone.’

The 3Mile as its most often called, is a Saint John landmark and an anomaly in the food and beverage business which tends to see bars and restaurants come and go almost as frequently as the Bay of Fundy tides. Saint John businessman Peter Bardsley bucked the trend when he purchased the tiny original pub back in 1978 and has successfully expanded his first business to the all-encompassing entertainment centre that it is today.

Holly Hewitt manages the 3Mile’s “Harley Saloon” and chuckles as she tells Invite Magazine about the number of people each week that walk into the Saloon unsure as to where they are going.

“It’s amazing to me that people still don’t know how many different businesses we have to offer or what’s inside this big building besides the original 3Mile Pub,” she says.

The Harley Saloon is a cozy small lounge located across the front of complex and houses a partially-roofed deck which is a popular spot for local business and trades people to gather after work and unwind with a cold beer which is served in a frosted glass. The walls are adorned with Harley Davidson motor cycle parts which gives the little bar a casual and fun atmosphere made all the more endearing by the staff that are outgoing and not shy in being part of the conversations and friendly bantering that takes place at the bar daily.

Walk through a vestibule to protect you from the outside weather and you can enter the 3Mile Steakhouse & Pub. Here you’ll find more of the same hospitality for which the 3Mile’s become known. Regulars have been served by Peggy Huggard – a member of the wait staff for almost 20 years. And they still come back looking for “Peg.”

“I met a boilermaker the other day who was working at the refinery shut-down and he told me I was his first server when he was just 19 and started in the trade. Now he’s 36!” Peggy punctuated the comment with her familiar laugh that makes you want to laugh with her.

The pub serves a mean steak if you’re looking for casual dining without the twenty dollar price tag on each meal. A quick glance at the newspaper-like menu shows over eight different kinds of steak along with the burgers and appetizers one would expect to find in a pub. The food is good and the service staff have been

out of high school for more than a number of years. On Saturday night, the Pub turns into a roadhouse

with its roster of live bands from across New Brunswick. Tables and chairs are removed to unveil a large dance floor, lights are dimmed and the music is good. Talented musicians belt out a range of music from high energy country to classic rock and many bands play danceable contemporary music for the 25+ crowd.

Adjacent to the Pub is Club Tonic – a large European-style nightclub which caters to Saint John’s young professionals on Friday and Saturday nights. No hip-hop is played here. The music is geared to its customer base which is 25-40. Tonic is a classy, big-city style venue with a warm color palette on stucco walls, along with elevated sections containing leather and cloth couches and chairs. The nightclub features a VIP section on the mezzanine floor which is available by reservation only.

Mark Duffley is the Nightclub Manager for the 3Mile complex and he tells Invite that Tonic enforces a ‘dress to impress dress code’ and that Saint Johners actually get dressed up to go out at night here.

Tonic is also the 3Mile’s banquet and meeting room for large groups looking for spots to host events. Since the 3Mile does not charge a rental fee for use of its big room, the venue frequently hosts meetings for service clubs and non-profit groups along with charity auctions. The room can be transformed into a stunning banquet room as nightclub furniture is replaced by banquet ‘rounds’ with upholstered chairs and decor that rivals most chain hotels. Space is still available for Christmas parties, but many of the key dates have been booked by repeat clientele.

Live touring acts also play Club Tonic. As Invite went to press, the 80s vintage band HELIX just played on stage.

Wanna play? Look no further than Legends Bar & Grille – a new addition to the 3Mile which opened this summer. It’s a sports bar offering a comfy lounge with flat screen TVs tuned to all of the pay-per-view sports with big overstuffed red leather chairs. It offers pool on five professional 4x9 billiard tables, a state-of-the-art golf simulator with 32 different golf courses, and a 50s style diner menu which soon will be offering pizza. It has a large private party room with pool table, fireplace, and leather couches which can be rented for parties of 5 to 30. And, Legends is home to Atlantic Lottery’s all new gaming centre – “Coasters” with its multitude of gaming options.

There’s lots to do at the 3Mile. Stop by for an hour and spend the day!
