BLESSING OF THE CRECHE: Thursday, December 14, 1967

As we this hour, 0 God, center our thoughts upon the coming of the Christ Child, we pray that something of His spirit may be born anew in our lives.

Bless. Confirm and strengthen within our hearts the

meaning and the message of this Holy Scene that .we. /s ~-s~GU!'.... &r-oec v.s .... By the way of Bethlehem, lead us, Lord, to newness of

life. By the beauty and the simplicity of the infant child,

renew within us a quiet trust ••• ~ the tenderness and devotion of Mary, deliver us

from hardness or heart and from an insensitivity to the needs of others •••

By the rugged patience or Joseph, save us from rash judgments and thus enable us to persevere through life's difficult moments.

By the coming of the Wise Men, keep our searching spirits from fainting

By the shining of a star, guide our feet in the path of peace and in the way of brotherhood among all peoples of the world.

Fill our lives with the Christmas lights of hope, peace, courage, and faith.

Help us to keep our lives fr0m becoming so crowded with the tinsel and glitter of life that no room is left to receive the deep and joyous tidings of this Holy Season. Touch our hearts this hour that we may depart from this place with renewed faith and strength, with peace and power at the center of our lives.

We ask this in the name of Him who was born in a stable because there was no room for Him in the Inn -even Jesus Christ, our Lord. .Alllen

souls, we are gathered tonight at another annual meeting of the Council

of Churches, with the hope of renewing our loyalty to Thee, our love for

one another, and our sense of bearing witness to Thy gospel of justice,

symposium in terms of a more meaningful concept and fulfillment of

our ministry; and as we journey through lent, this period of restraint and

temperance, do journey with us and keep our hearts aglow with Thy

presence and Thy word.

For we wish nothing more than to be able to serve Thee, Thy

people and Thy Ch.urch v1hen estrangement from Thee, and neglect of Thy

INVOCATION: Chapin Graduation, June 4, 1969

0 Thou who art the light of the minds that know Thee, the joy of the hearts that love Thee, and the strength of the wills that serve Thee,

Grant us, we beseech Thee, 0 God, thy continued blessing on this cODlilDlni ty of learning - The Chapin School,

And more especially on this Commencement Day when rejoicing in the accomplishments and high achievements of these young lives, we leave behind respected teachers, beloved friends, treasured ties, and familiar places.

In this hour, help us to feel anew the richness, the dedication, the beauty of these illuminated years now drawing to a close.

Blend within us, 0 God, all high visions, noble thoughts and deep resolves associated with these wonderful years of learning.

And may the sparks - kindled here by wise and dedicated teachers, tended carefully by loving and patient parents, set the hearts and the wills of those who this day graduate aflame to do thy will.

Help them to carry lighted torches into dark places, and continue to increase their knowledge of truth. When, in other years, they return to this loved spot, may they who have been given so much of light and love not come back with darkened lamps.

Make us faithful and strong, patient and tender, courageous and compassionate, eager to fulfill t~ purposes for our lives.

prayer by GUY ]. yoakum at the wedding of his son Robert to Alice P. Blum

God of our fathers, we invoke Thy blessing upon these Thy children whose mutu~l affection we are today privileged to exalt into a solemn and perpetual pact. Unite them, 0 God, with innumerable tendrils of common interest through work and play. Fuse their minds with shared purposes, and in the mystic_ garden of their love may it be forever spring.

We pray for the home which is to be established. Send into it, Thou Father after Whom all families on earth are named, many influences for good. And may influences for good go forth from this home, amplified, clarified, and beamed toward many areas of human need. So shall the house be blessed in holiness and happiness and service, and stand in Thy grace through many beautiful years. Amen
